Orchid Mantis
An orchid mantis baby commission I got to work on recently!! 🌸✨
You might know orchid mantises for their beautiful pink and white tones, but their young have a very vivid orange and black coloration to ward off predators! Very cool lil guys
Not a sore loser
After 9 months away, there are some significant maintenance to be done. I was sawing some marine ply when this beauty ran across the plank and jumped onto the saw handle. I went inside and got the macro lens, then moved it to the garden.
Incense Burner in Form of a Praying Mantis, 19th century. Japan, Iron, gold, lining of silver.
I have hang-ups about posting photos, but I really wanted to share that over the past year I've been raising these mantises, Bo and Rhom (first two images and second two images, respectively), species Rhombodera megaera. It was my first time having mantises, but I managed to raise them to adulthood and I'm so proud of these two little idiots.

Burg 😳😳😳
Do you have any cool facts about ground mantises? Specifically the ones that hang out in the northwestern US (there's an Idaho native species but I'm guessing other ones nearby as well)? I unfortunately dont have any pictures but we used to get big ones in our backyard in the late summer, and I was always terrified of them lol even though they were just minding their business. I haven't seen them in a few years but I'm trying to work past my mantis aversion in case they ever come back!
In that area it would probably be ground mantids in the genus Litaneutria, although they're not particularly large. Only a couple of inches at most, so I'm not positive that's what you mean?
Either way I'm afraid I don't know anything about their biology or behavior! But I can tell you they're entirely harmless to people. And very cute! Let's admire one
Too precious! Photos by phytographer
If this isn't the type you meant, then you'll have to be more specific :)
Just a reminder: jesters are carnivorous. Be safe with them. They like eating children;)
