like sure, maybe there's stuff we haven't found out about yet, but as of right now, i feel like virgil's deep hatred of janus actually has nothing to do with janus at all, and everything to do with virgil's hatred of his past self. and his past in general. in his mind, he's reducing janus as a side down to a representation, a symbol of everything he wants to forget about. it's pretty simple: as long as he can perceive janus as an unquestionable evil, he doesn't have to consider the actual complexity of what he did by leaving them.

and i think janus understands all of that, which is why the hatred is mutual. not only is it "you left me", it's also "you left me, and are now using me to absolve yourself of any responsibility. you left me for something better, and are now fighting to deny me that same better. you can't even give me the dignity to hate me like you mean it, you just hate me on principle alone."

and i think that janus' most closely guarded secret, the one that keeps him up at night, the one that makes him physically sick to even think about, is that despite all of that, he still wants virgil back.

honestly sad that janus and remus are canonically best buds who play ddr or whatever because can you imagine how much more interesting and tragic it would be if jan didnt really care about rem. if he just knew he needed allies after being cast off by patton. if his worldview was so fucked up that he cant let remus or anyone else in. if he internalizes the "every man for himself" mentality so badly that he genuinely cant care for the people around him. and remus, after literally getting abandoned by everyone he thought loved him, including himself, clings onto janus because hes the only one remus has left. and janus doesnt even care. if anything, remus is like some kind of dog to him. wouldnt that disgust you? wouldnt that fucking piss you off? and yet. he doesn't have a choice. he has literally no one else. hes had to act out and put on masks and become the monster everyone else fears. he has no choice. he's never had a choice.
