Summary: It’s Simon’s birthday! You and Grace decide to make him a cake to celebrate but Simon’s… a little confused?
Warning: This is actually came out a bit depressing but don’t worry it’s still cute I think. I rewatched Ride the Cyclone and the New Birthday Song scene gave me an idea.
On Eden, food and ingredients are a scarce resource so you make what you need to. And sugar is an even rarer commodity considering it comes from fruits. Fruits are hard to come by. To make food and use sugar for something trivial unheard of and considered a waste of precious resources.
That’s why its so strange when you and Grace, who had been working hard with the biodome team to find a way to create sugar out of the limited resources you had from the Hail Mary, present him with a cake that you two had made. It was so jarring to him. Was it an important day? That’s literally what Simon asks you and Grace because back on Eden, cakes and sweetened things are a luxury reserved for important occasions like important holidays and ceremonies. You both nod, but Simon looks only more confused. What day was it then? Simon tried to think about all of the days that could be important on Erid but his mind only gave him blanks. You and Grace seem to catch on to his confusion.
“It’s your birthday, Simon.” Grace says to him.
Simon blinks out of even more confusion.
Birthdays mean very little on Eden. They hold some value when it comes to young children, it means they’ve survived to become a little bit older, a little stronger, more likely to continuing living. But once you leave your childhood years and enter into your adolescent years and onwards, your birthday just becomes another day like all the others. It’s a day that you know, just not one you care about. It’s just a tally marker for your age.
“You made me a cake for my birthday?” Simon asks softly. Simon intends to ask that question because he’s so confused but a part of him feels touched by the sentiment. You two made him a cake for his birthday? He knows he told you two when it is at some point, but that was just a trivial topic,. It’s something that you say and then forget about till it resurfaces later in a passing conversation. As previously mentioned, birthdays are just a tally point on Eden. But you and Grace made a cake for his birthday. This like if you clapped and cheered when he sneezed from Simon’s perspective.
“Of course we made you a cake, Si! Why wouldn’t-” Grace is about to say when you suddenly, but subtly, elbow him in the rib to make him shut up and redirect the conversation. “It’s a tradition back where me and Grace are from. We celebrate the birthdays of people we care about by making them a cake and wishing them a happy birthday.” you explain with Grace chiming in at the end with “So happy birthday!”.
“We also managed to get a present made for you but Rocky and Adrian are bringing that in later since they needed to rework some things but we figured we should get the cake part out of the way first. Come on. It’s not gonna eat itself.” Grace adds before herding to all to have a seat at the table.
