words from Would’ve, could’ve, should’ve by Taylor Swift stitched onto fabric
like there comes a point where you think something is fundamentally wrong with you. and then it turns out it’s just Friday and you haven’t washed your hair in three days and maybe you’re also just a little lonely and the combination of all three of those things is whittling a hole into your chest every time you breathe. but also the sun’s up. and you’ve survived everything so far, so you’ll survive this too, even if it hurts, even if you have to survive it many times.

desperation sits heavy on my tongue
they should invent a life that is liveable and a sleep that comes easy and a winter that doesn't feel like decay and a spring that doesn't feel like the past and a head that doesn't hurt and a heart that doesn't sit in your chest like a rock and a body that doesn't hate you and a hometown that doesn't make you lose your mind and a university that won't kill you they should invent a me that is normal I think that would be really neat. ok good night I love you
there is something so frustrating about it, because it's cliche, but. you really do feel like there's just a hole in you. something missing. like life just whistles right through, never quite touching any heart in you.
are you happy? sure. you're probably happy, smile about it. it's just... happy like smeared icing; happy like leftovers. you are happy around the hole, never happy full-up.
are you sad? that's the good news - if you are sad, it's nowhere you can feel it. life just washes over your ribs and you wake up crying without reason. when you touch your wet cheeks, you feel kind of silly about it, the drama you've met. you say - huh. this is weird. i'm honestly not even really upset.
like life happening to a puppet. like remembering agony in a dream. oh, you should probably be worried. it's not good to not feel anything. you know that logically.
but you're so very numb - you watch the little alarm rise in your chest, a warning. you find yourself laughing. uh oh. you say. i think something is burning.
no longer fits
i have this bad habit. a game i play with only myself. i play it absently in the back of my mind like a voicemail: “is that me? in another life, is that me?”
is that me? she’s beautiful after her first child. married her high school love. runs a lot. lost the weight easy, like taking a butter wrapper off. full time job she holds down with no issue; best friend to many. easily balancing items as if all of life is weightless.
is that me? she’s fashionable. cute vintage dress and broad rimmed hat. blinking her bright eyes at a phd candidate as they sit under the awning to avoid the rain. so delicate her fingers look wrapped around a mug of coffee. so wonderful the arch of her brows while she is laughing.
is that me? in another life, where i was not cut out of the wrong cloth and made incorrectly, is that me? where i did not allow myself to wallow, where i picked myself up faster, where i didn’t let the darkness get me - is that me?
is that me? she smiles over her award. has been writing just as long as me. she says of course it was hard but the work was worth doing. i go home and i read my own work until the words turn into worms and gobble up my breathing.
is that me? she mentions she had a rough childhood but got the help she needed and got medicated and found her way out of it by nineteen. she has almost the same tattoo i do, but hers is better done.
is that me? when she dances, doesn’t she do it so easily. when she eats, it’s done freely. when she loves, god.
for her sake, i hope it’s openly.
Even you.
being alive is like a whole fucking thing dude ive only been here 23 years and can only really remember like 10 of those years at most and yet im literally immobilized by fear and anxiety i have no clue what i want and yet i am mad at myself for not moving fast enough? like towards what? for who? who is even going to hand me a medal for living correctly? like what would happen if i was just content but like no one knew and i told no one. would that still count? i think it would
