âI know you, I walked with you once upon a dream. I know you, that look in your eyes is so familiar a gleam. And I know itâs true that visions are seldom all they seem. But if I know you, I know what youâll do Youâll love me at once, the way you did once upon a dream.â
â Maleficentâs Story (assault tw)
Maleficent was a fairy raised in the Moors, a land for all the magical folk to stay safe from the humans who wished to harm them. In her youth, she was kind and fair, often taking the responsibilities of a queen and acting as a mediator or a general protector. Her wing span was magnificent, her magic stronger than any other fairy. One day, a human boy somehow entered the Moors and tried to a jewel from the pool. Maleficent managed to convince him to return the item and they soon formed a bond that defied all expectations.
When Maleficent grew into her young adult stage, she became the sole protector of the Moors, battling the human King Henry. She trained tirelessly to perfect her magic, proving herself to be âbeautiful but deadlyâ as the human saying would go. As she and the forest army worked together, they were able to wound the King and defeat his army.
Maleficent and Stefan came face-to-face again after the battle, and despite the years heâs spent trying to become King Henryâs heir, she forgives him. Her love and trust in him, however, proved to be her downfall. As they spent a night together, Maleficent felt oddly disoriented until she was in a deep sleep. When she finally awoke in the dead of night, the fairy was alone with an excruciating pain in her shoulder blades â her beautiful wings were burned and torn from her body. Her cries echoed for miles and her soul died as the gravity of Stefanâs betrayal hit her.
For years, Stefan gave her hope that the human race wasnât automatically horrible, but he quickly made her retract that belief when he proved to be just as vile as the dying King Henry.
With revenge, anger, and bitterness deeply saturating her heart, Maleficent used those feelings to help her stand and re-learn how to walk like a human. Gone was the sweet, young fairy who wished to find the good in all creatures. Instead she named herself the Evil Queen of the Moors, using her magic to grow a barrier of thorn bushes around the magical land, trapping most of the creatures within and keeping the human army out.
Without her wings, Maleficent needed another creature who could fly for her. She found that in a raven named Diablo, whom she saved from being eaten by transfiguring him into a human. He became her most trusted companion, traveling back and forth between the human kingdom and the Moors as she taunted the foolish humans who tried to penetrate her unbreakable forest of thorns with her magic. She was plotting her revenge while Stefan began his reign as king.
Finally, that day came when Stefan and his queen christened their newborn daughter. Maleficent had been shunned of course, but she wasnât going to let that stop her from going through with the first part of her revenge. She interrupted the celebration and the gifts from the sickeningly âgoodâ fairies in the most dramatic fashion â placing a curse on the child. Aurora would prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fall into a sleeping death by sunset on her sixteenth birthday. Seeing the looks of horror on Stefan and his wifeâs faces was exactly what Maleficent wanted, but she craved more chaos and devastation.
She wanted every so-called royal or hero, the champions of all things good in the world, to suffer and have their happiness ripped away from them. She didnât want to have to hear more tales of happy endings aided by those foolish, annoying fairies of light and goodness. So she began to reach out to others who shared her views, wanting to know who they wished to see punished for taking all the happy endings. For years, Maleficent practiced and prepared the perfect curse to send heroes and their true loves somewhere theyâd never achieve a happily ever after.
But something backfired as she conjured the curse. Maybe Maleficent and other villains were too cocky. Maybe the force of light magic and true love was too strong even for the mistress of all evil to destroy. Whatever the reason, Maleficent felt the dark magic trap her and her companion until they were cursed to the same place as the heroes. When she awoke, she and Diablo were standing in a room with light shining through large windows in a kingdom called New York City.
Despite still possessing her powers, Maleficent couldnât transport herself and the rest of the villains back to their respective lands. To fit in and avoid anyone finding her or Diablo, sheâs given them new human bodies, but they both keep a close watch on both the heroes and villains stumbling their way through this ghastly world. Although her original intention was to give other evil souls their chance at revenge, Maleficent â well, Malvina now â has been enjoying watching them suffer a bit longer. What she hasnât been enjoying was the knowledge of Aurora awaking from her cursed slumber here in New York. Refusing to have more plans backfire, Maleficentâs begun trailing the princess with the intention of becoming close to her so as to keep her from ever finding happiness.
