"Yes!" He begins looking for the object she’s taking about and then returns empty handed. "I can’t find it."
"Uh, okay..." Millie stopped what she was doing so she could look for the potato masher. After a few moments she located it and returned back to her station. "So, Xander sweetie, what have you been up to today?"
"What does it look like I’m doing?" He responded roughly before pausing and answering her correctly, "Don’t want to fall asleep."
Millie raised her eyebrows at his first initial outburst wondering how she was supposed to answer him. Luckily she didn't have to. Not letting herself be flustered by his harshness, Millie smiled at Holden sympathetically. "Everything alright? Are you having nightmares or...?" Millie trailed off not really sure of another reason someone wouldn't want to sleep.
When he sees that it’s Millie, a smile appears on his face and then he puts a hand on the back of his head, making at as a pillow, as he continue his star gazing. “‘Ey, me love.” he says playfully.
Millie rolled her eyes at him, but the faintest smile was evident on her face. "I should've guessed it'd be you out here so late. Ya know, as a keeper you're settin' a terrible example for the Greenies," she playfully scolded him.
"Well, I mean, the lucky guy doesn’t have to know." He frowns. "None tha’s fun. Talking to gorgeous girls like you is."
"Look, honey, you've been here long enough you should know there's a time for sleepin', there's a time for jokin' and there's a time for workin'. An ya need to stop blurrin' the lines or you're gonna start getting into trouble."
He smiles. “Then I’ll just blame you and yer pretty face for keepin’ me up.”
"Honey, I've got a potential fiancé who wouldn't like hearin' you talk like that," she teased, an unimpressed smirk on her face. "You need to spend less time flirtin' and more time sleepin' and workin' around here hun," she scolded him lightly, still brushing her fingers through his hair.
"That’s something I can worry about later," he replied without glancing at her, "And you shouldn’t give advice when you could use it yourself."
"Right, later when you have to wake up?" Millie teased lightly, bumping into him slightly. "We're not talking about my sleeping habits right now, we're talking 'bout yours. Whatcha doin' up so late anyways?"
After what Maggie had guessed had been an hour or so of pure wondering—thinking about the people that had placed them here, about her family, about the Maze—, the girl realized sleep was not going to make its presence anytime soon. Margaret stood up and began weaving her way through the sleeping bodies. Soon enough she found herself out of the Homestead, and sat down in the middle of the Glade. Hugging her knees, she looked up at the sky. The wind swinging back and forth was easily bearable, and the only light there was were the white rays coming from the moon. Silence flooded the Glade, being occasionally broken by soft moans and other light noises coming from the people sleeping.
A girl’s voice coming from a rather close spot near hers made her look up quickly. She was incredibly thankful it was Millie, not only because it was clearly not Cade nor Annie, but because she liked the company of that girl. “Sorry, Millie. I tried to fall asleep, I swear… I just couldn’t.”
Millie nodded smiling at Maggie before turning her head and looking up towards the bright moon that hung low in the sky. She couldn't put her finger on it, but something always felt off she she looked at it. "I understand. Even after being here for two years, it's hard to sleep. Even after a long day of work where every bone in your body is tired, it's hard to sleep."
Even now, for Millie, she barely got any sleep at night. She was always staying up late worrying about everyone and the Greenies. She liked to make sure everyone was asleep before her body was comfortable enough with the idea of sleep and then she was always the first awake, cooking breakfast for the lot of them. To be honest, Millie was probably the most sleep deprived person in the Glade. Millie turned back to face the younger girl a sweet smile on her face. "So what's keeping you up tonight?"
Cade scooted backward, until her back hit the wall. She rose and eyebrow, and chuckled. “I wouldn’t be surprised, s’probably one a Greenie or somethin’. Goin’ back for thirds.” She joked, “What’re you low on? We could send a list down the box when it comes back up.”
Millie shook her head as she looked over the papers. "I'm smart and figured out the Greenies like eating more so they get smaller portions. Everyone gets the same amount of food," she told Cade, chewing on her thumb nail. "We should be fine until the box comes up. You know how I get though. I worry too much."
"I love mashed potatoes," he agrees. He adds words to the melody he’d been humming. "Potatoes, potatoes two days in a row. Potatoes, potatoes two days in a row.”
Millie shrugged happily at his comment. "Everyone does. I don't know what it is, but people will kill for mashed potatoes," she told him as she looked around for her makeshift potato masher. "Honey, can you help me find the-" she motions with her hands, pretending to mash potatoes.
Cade smirked, tucking her legs under her. “Good that,” she chuckled. She nodded at Millie’s question, leaning forward, to reach under her bunk. Cade grabbed a small brown journal, where she kept all of the information on the Glade — Who came in that month, what supplies they got; Just to keep track of things. “Here,” she said, tossing Millie the journal. “Whatcha lookin’ for?”
Millie grabbed the journal and walked over to sit down on the bunk next to Cade's. Pulling out the papers she needed to look over, Millie started to read, her eyes scanning the paper. "I might be going crazy, but I think we got less food this past time around," Millie inspected the papers closely. "That or someone's stealing themselves some midnight snacks."
"Yeah, I whipped it up just right now." He leans against a table. "What are you making again?"
"Aw, honey it sounds really nice. Great cookin' music if ya ask me!" Millie encouraged him as she grabbed a bowl and started mixing stuff together. "I'm makin' mashed potatoes. They're easy and our potato reserves are goin' bad and everyone love em, so- Potatoes two days in a row!"
Wouldn’t be in my nature to brag, now would it? I just do my part. You’ll be getting a lot more than broccoli tomorrow. The tomatoes are perfect even if I grew them myself.
No it wouldn't be, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna stop given' you the opportunity to. Until then I'll just have to compliment you like crazy on how you're such a hard worker and good with the Gladers and bring me the best vegetables a girl can find! Oh, we're finally gettin' tomatoes huh? Looks like I'll be makin' pasta tomorrow.
"I ain’t lyin’, the stars are keepin’ me up." He smiles. Suddenly, he swivels around and lies down, setting his head in her lap. "I’ll take the blame," He shrugs again, looking up into her eyes.
Millie rolled her eyes. "You know star-gazin' ain't a good enough reason to be tired in the morning 'round here. I ain't gonna be the one yellin' at ya, I'm just warnin' ya." She shrugged her shoulder lightly, looking down at his head in her lap. Casually, she started running her fingers through his hair. "You're gonna have a ton of angry, hungry Gladers comin' after you. Hope ya know that."
Cade only rolled her eyes, mumbling an apology. “Sorry.” She said, moving to sit on her bunk. “What’d’ya need, Mil?”
"Honey, you're fine. Your temper is nothing knew to me," Millie teased looking around. "Do you have your paperwork in here? Where we write down what food we get each month?"
"Ummmm…" Xander looks around, humming as he moves, and when he finds the container of salt, he picks it up and holds it out to Millie, still humming.
Millie smiled taking the container of salt from his hands. "Oh thanks honey. I'd lose my head without you an the other cooks 'round, I swear," Millie shuffled around hurriedly in the kitchens. "Are you humming a new song you've whipped up?"
"Millie, you slinthead,” Cade grumbled, hastily pulling pulling on her shirt. “I’m not lettin’ you see me naked, you shuckin’ shuck.”
Millie walked father into the room, not even looking at Cade. "Jeeze Cade. Can you call me anymore names? I promise ya, seein' ya naked wasn't my intentions."
