EIC < - > IMC Converter for Iron Lung (and crossover) Fans
Helloooo Iron Lung and Bloodmary (and other Iron Lung crossover) fans! After reading alot of Bloodymary fanfics and doing some reading on the Iron Lung wiki, I realized that IMC (Instellar Martian Calendar) was an underutilized trope in that particular crossover space, despite the similarly common trope that Simon is a Martian, and would have spent his formative years up through early adulthood using the IMC instead of the EIC. I figured part of the reason was that the game (and even more so the movie) never gives dates in IMC, and only uses EIC is that the COI hates Eden, and Eden is the only faction we know of that uses IMC, even if Simon himself would be used to thinking in Martian years, even with being incarcerated for 16 earth years with the COI.
Regardless, I have made a Google Sheet that you can copy yourself and mess around with, so that you too can convert between EIC and IMC! Please enjoy!
A few important limitations to note, as well as assumptions I made:
The game states that EIC and IMC both started with the first Martian Colony in 1992. To make my calculations simpler, I used the Martian Vernal Equinox in 1992 as my IMC year 0, so this converter cannot convert dates before Nov 23, 0 EIC! (more nerd stuff below the cut)
Since the game never specifies what kind of Martian calendar IMC is, I used the one with the most information on it on Wikipedia, called the Darian Calendar. It assumes 24 months of either 28 or 27 sols (Martian days), and I used the "default" leap day of the last sol of the last month happening approx 6 times out of 10 years. Personally I enjoy the Utopian naming system best, but all this calculator does is give you numbers. Naming the 24 months is up to y'all.
The Darian Calendar specifically places the "New Year" on the Martian vernal (spring) equinox, so keep that in mind if that's important for your writing/whatever you're using this for.
For those of you in the know about the Julian Dates system, yes, the EIC inputs do correct for the months of January and February, so don't worry about it.
Due to an assumption I had to make about the leap year formula for Mars, this converter technically only works 100% correctly through 24/27/2000 IMC (12/19/3764 EIC). After that, due to how Mars is slowly becoming more elliptical over time, a new leap year formula would be needed, along with a new length of year conversion, since the year would become 0.0013 times longer with the new leap year correction. The specifics are on the previously linked wikipedia page.
I am using the Jean Meeus algorithm to convert between Gregorian calendar and Julian Date, as well as a minorly altered version of the Mars Sol Date conversion from Julian Date referenced on the Martian Time Keeping wikipedia page to fit to the Nov 23, 1992 start date of EIC.
