Hopefully she wouldn’t get the wrong idea. It was a romantic gesture, wasn’t it? Showing up with a bouquet of flowers for a lady. Especially after going to watch a movie together. Not that Christopher was against that in the least, but the last thing he wanted to do was make Kaya uncomfortable. He hadn’t bought them for that reason. He would never want to overstep boundaries and ruin the friendship they had. He’d bought them because they made him smile when he’d seen them, cheerful and yellow, and he’d immediately stepped inside to purchase the marigolds, only overthinking it on the way to see her. But it was alright, no going back now. Any excuse to stop by the café. “Hello, hello,” he greeted the woman as he walked up to the counter, waiting until she didn’t seem busy helping another customer. Pulling the neatly wrapped bouquet out from behind his back, he held them out with a smile. “I saw these and I thought of you. I was hoping they would brighten your day as you always do mine.”

Kaya couldn’t remember the last time she had gotten out of the house and actually had a good time. The movie was a classic, one of her favorites and the fact that she got to share it with Christopher? It was perfect, popcorn and all. However she was a tad bit nervous to see him again. Though she had a wonderful night she assumed they were just hanging out as friends. They had been best friends for so so many years, she didn’t want to ruin their closeness with a slight infatuation with him. Even admitting having a small crush on him was hard enough.

Kaya was wiping the flour from her apron when Christopher had walked in with beautiful bright yellow flowers. Oh gosh, this was going to be harder than she thought. Feeling her cheeks warm up as he approached she flashed a rather warm smile. “Oh Christopher these are just magnificent. You didn’t have to do that for me, though I do adore them.” She sighed happily with a beaming smile. “Thank you.” She replied genuinely, taking the bouquet from him gently. “I have the perfect place for these!”

“I’ll be on my best behavior,” Christopher promised, his eyes twinkling. She made him feel young again, too. Not that he ever really felt old. Sometimes it was hard to believe he was almost fifty. He was still interested in exploring, adventures, still had quite the imagination, and he seemed to have more energy than most guys his age. But she made him feel like… a college student, like he was in a completely different world with her, one that was brand new. Even if he’d known her years now. “Well, I’ll remember that. And I will pay you for all this hard work.”

He couldn’t wipe the smile from his face. He hoped he could bring her half the joy she brought him. Seeing Kaya would always make his day better. “Well, if you’d like to visit outside of work…” He paused for a moment. “I’ve heard they’re doing a few movies in the park this month. If you’re free one Saturday, I know I could use a break.”

After Reuben’s father had exited the picture Kaya was fine with getting by on her own. Being a single mother was rewarding even though it was extremely exhausting at times. However now that Roo left the nest Kaya couldn’t help but to feel a certain loneliness. Empty nest syndrome was real, that was for sure. Kaya just couldn’t help but to feel that maybe she would’ve been happier living the traditional American dream. The white picket fence house, with a husband and kids to come home too. How could she miss something she never had?

Kaya had gotten lost in her thoughts and her freshly brewed coffee that when Christopher spoke again she looked at him with her wide doe eyes. At his offer butterflies immediately began to infiltrate her stomach. She tried not to seem so flustered, they were just two friends going to see a movie that's all. “I’d love that actually. It’s a date then.”

“I’m sure you’re a force to be reckoned with, but only if someone deserves it.” Christopher had no doubts Kaya could hold her own, and he wouldn’t want to be on her bad side. She had spunk. But he could never imagine her going off on someone that didn’t do something terrible. In any case, he’d back her up. “Oh, these look wonderful, thank you,” he beamed, picking up the fork immediately. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d had a home cooked meal.

Nodding as he took a bite, he felt he could understand it in a way. Winnie was not his son, there was a time he’d been ‘older’ than Christopher, but at his age, he’d come to the realization that he was most likely the closest thing he’d ever have. He was trying to branch out and live his own life now, and let Pooh live his, but it left an ache in his chest. “That’s why I stay at the home, usually. It’s nice having people around. Going home to an empty house…” Christopher shook his head, catching himself. That was a depressing conversation, and he wasn’t trying to bum either of them out. “This is delicious, Kaya, you’ll have to show me your secrets one day.”

“You’re spot on so you better watch out.” She teased with a rather large grin. Though hurting someone was never on Kaya’s agenda. She’d quickly throw herself into danger before hurting someone else. “Your absolutely welcome! I wouldn’t mind if you stopped by for breakfast more often.” She offered with a smile, bringing her coffee to her lips as he began to dig in.

Her heart ached with her little Roo out of the house but at the same time it was so full. She was so proud of everything Reuben had accomplished. He was far braver than she ever was and he taught her how to love fully and unconditionally. Kaya bit the side of her cheek speaking of an empty home. She knew he understood, that was enough for her. To feel comforted. “That’s why you’ll have to amuse me with visits like this. Keep me young and such.” His compliment made her heart leap bounds against her chest. Trying not to feel like a flushed teenager. “I just might you know, if you’re lucky of course.”

Kaya was just about to close up shop. The day went by slow so she felt no need in staying after hours. Besides she already cleaned up most of everything she needed too. That was the perfectionism in her. That’s when Kaya looked up from her glass case of goodies and noticed a blonde outside her doors. Poor thing, Kaya couldn’t say no to that pouty look of hers. Who were she to turn away a hungry customer? Besides she had plenty of left overs. She knew Nani would get on to her again about giving food away for free but she couldn’t help it. She just wanted to make people smile. Kaya met the girls gaze with a large smile, waving her in with her hands. “Come on in honey! no need to stand out there in the cold.” @imcginationstation

“Anyone with taste buds would,” he smiled, inviting himself to take a seat while she cooked. He appreciated the gesture and even more, he appreciated having an excuse to have a longer conversation with her. His smile growing at the sound of her laughter, he shook his head. “Oh, no, don’t worry, I’d bail you out. I think you’re far too sweet to be behind bars.”

Letting out a laugh of his own at her answer, he shook his head. “I’ve been warned. If you ever offer me Jambalaya, I will run for the hills.” As if. He would take the meal, and he would eat every bite, no matter how awful it may be. He didn’t think he’d have the heart to tell her he didn’t like something she made. Luckily, he’d never had to worry about it. “How’ve you been outside of work? How is Roo? I feel like I haven’t seen him in ages.” 

Kaya could only smile brightly in return at his compliment, a little lost for words to respond. Sure, her bakery brought in business but to hear a dear friend compliment her cooking meant the world to her. Especially from Christopher. “That’s because you haven’t seen the mama bear side come out of me yet. I could maybe last a couple hours, at most.” She replied, another giggle spilling from her lips.

“Don’t worry Roo’s made me sworn off the dish for eternity.” Kaya teased, plating the finished eggs delicately on a plate. “Eggs are done!” She hummed, before setting the plate in front of him with some silverware. Then proceeded to pour herself a cup of coffee of her own and filled the empty seat next to Christopher. She’d count this as her break but if another customer walked in she’d be on her feet once more. “It’s been okay, y’know Reubens grown now. Already has his own place and everything. Which as a mother I’m happy to see him thrive, I just miss him sometimes. But he’s doing great! Honestly I get more socialization when I’m here working. The house can get lonely sometimes...”

“I’m just saying that because I have working taste buds,” he laughed, it was true; his theory was that Kaya baked with love. She was a woman who did everything with love, and it showed. Though he was more drawn to her shop because of her than the baked goods, there was no denying her talent. Was there anything out there he was so good at? He’d hardly gotten into any hobbies. Life was mostly work and worry after his childhood, only recently reaching the point he felt comfortable doing things that made him happy.

“I’m a very patient person.” And honestly, he’d be a fool to complain about spending more time with her. She was a joy to be around. “Are you sure? I don’t want to add more to your plate, I’m sure you’re already so busy.” He wouldn’t fight her too hard if she insisted, eggs sounded great at the moment, a real breakfast — but cookies were perfectly fine too. “Sweet, savory, is there anything you can’t make, Miss Kaya?”

“I’m just smitten you enjoy the food, that’s enough for me.” She chimed in with an airy laugh of her own. Kaya knew Christopher could go anywhere in Prentiss for a bite to eat. So it warmed her heart that he chose her little bakery. Plus she adored his company, when he was around she felt a little less lonely in the world.

Cracking two eggs open over a pan she flashed a warm smile towards Christopher. “Of course! I can’t let you leave here on an empty stomach. That would be a crime!” Kaya giggled, grabbing everything else she may have needed for his plate. She didn’t want to go overboard but she had a habit of doing so, especially for the ones she loved. “It was busy earlier, but things are starting to slow down again. So it’s no trouble.” She reassured, multi-tasking watching over his eggs and pouring him a hot cup of coffee. “Jambalaya I’ve been told, Roo was not a fan.”

“I can’t do that.” Nani pushed the money closer to Kaya’s edge of the counter, passing the pie along the way. “This is your business. You’re already doing free cookies. Not to mention, who all have you offered free food to this week?” She gave a soft smile. She had been witness to the woman’s generosity, but she couldn’t take advantage. It just wasn’t right with how hard Nani knew she worked. “Hard month.” She groaned. “I was able to get some work at the casino to try and pay to get our stove replaced after someone managed to catch it on fire.” No one had dared to confess or snitch, not with Nani’s temper on full display and their kitchen still coated with the foam from the fire extinguisher. She still got pissed every time she walked into the kitchen and looked at the now useless hunk of metal and wires - and so she avoided being home when she could. “I’m glad to do it. Team Kani - high five.” She raised up her hand and grinned at the woman. “If there’s anything I have learned how to do, it’s clean.”

Kaya sighed and finally took the money once Nani slid it back towards her. “I’m only taking this because I know you’re too stubborn to take it back.” Kaya giggled, then took the money to the cash register. “Only you...”: She spoke softly, smiling behind the lie. She had always been a terrible liar. “Okay fine, only you and Christopher Robin. Plus a few teenagers, but those were only cookies I can make a dozen more of those at anytime.” Kaya had always been generous and it was something she couldn’t quite help. Being a single mother made her realize how hard life really was alone. If she could offer someone a helping hand in their time of need she’d be happy. “I’m sorry to hear that dear.” She replied with a small frown. “A fire? Oh lord, the kids are alright though? Sounds like Reuben when he was little. Always getting into any and everything life threatening.” Kaya giggled again, returning the high five with enthusiasm. “Kani? I love that. There’s no help I’d rather have around here than you, so I’m happy nonetheless.”

He stared at the pretty woman in disbelief as he stared at the woman and the bag she was holding out. Part of him wanted to grab the cookies and run but another part of him didn’t understand the kindness she was displaying towards him. No one was ever nice to his family, him included and he didn’t know why now would be any different. “What’s the catch?” He finally asked her, brow arched.

Kaya stood still with the same warm smile and batted eyelashes as the younger one gave her a look of confusion. She knew what being a teen was like, she had been one too after all. Finding yourself and your place was hard, especially in a world that only made you feel lost. “No catch, honey. Promise.” She smiled, reaching for her pot of coffee and began pouring herself a cup.

Christopher was both tired and hungry. He hadn’t eaten. He’d been up since four am, sifting through paperwork and rearranging his office. He couldn’t sleep. As exhausted as he was, some nights sleep simply wouldn’t come, so he found himself getting up and heading to the Home for Imaginary Friends to make sure everything was in order. It always was. He always worried for nothing.

Biting back a yawn as he walked inside, the sight of Kaya immediately brought a smile to his tired expression. “That would be lovely. You do make the best cookies I’ve ever had.” Eyeing the case for a moment, his gaze flickered back to her. “You may have to help me out, my stomach is feeling rather indecisive today. White chocolate macadamia or oatmeal raisin? Or… heck, ring me up for two of each.” He’d bring a couple to Pooh, too. “And whatever else you might suggest. I’m starving.”

Kaya was starting on a new batch of cookies as the first had already sold out and quite fast too. She noticed Christopher had walked in while she was stirring the batter in her silver mixing bowl. “Oh hush, you’re just saying that because we’re friends.” Kaya teased, returning the smile with her own. “Did you get enough sleep last night?” She asked as her tone shifted to a worrisome one, noticing his yawn and rather tiresome expression.

“You can certainly have both. Already have some in the oven baking at the moment. As long as you’re willing to wait a few more minutes until they’re ready.” Kaya stated, setting down her mixing bowl and began brushing off the flour from her apron. “Starving? Oh no, that just won’t do. I know this is just a little ol’ bakery but you know I could whip you up some eggs If you’d like? Just don’t tell the other customers, they might get jealous.”

Nani knew the exact amount needed for her order now, a piece of pie that she used to treat herself once a week - sometimes - most of time… well, occasionally. Treats like these, for herself, were usually the first things to go. But she passed the money over today and slumped against the counter - Nani was never someone who needed looked after, even before her parents died. She’d always been driven, responsible - but she was driven and responsible for a teenager. When she finally wished she had someone to take care of her, there was no one there. She knew that Miss Kaya was just like this, being a mother to everyone who came in, and that Nani was not special - but she relished in it. “Do you need any help this week? I could come by before work tomorrow.” She offered.

Kaya enjoyed seeing Nani especially since she was one of her regulars. She often saw her younger self in Nani. While she wasn’t a single mother she took on the role of one with her little sister Lilo. Kaya found that the be the most self-sacrificing thing someone could do. Which made Kaya a little over protective over the older sister, knowing how hard it was to go through it alone. “Oh honey, please keep your change. I know how hard you work for you money! You’re always welcomed to have any thing you like free of charge.” Kaya smiled softly, sliding her the plate of pie across the counter. It was just in her nature to mother people. it’s what she did best. Noticing her slumped against the counter she frowned. “Hard day?” Moving to her calendar she checked her schedule. “Tomorrow is fine! This place mostly needs a good extra cleaning, dishes and things like that. Only if you have the time, I hate to see you push yourself so hard.”

“Okay, so - serious question..Does that mean if I make multiple separate purchases I can get multiple free cookies?” Doug asked, head tilted slightly to the side as he looked at the woman, then to the cookies. His stomach grumbled audibly as if on cue to his stare at the delectable little morsels. “Because I would very much like multiple.”

Kaya was happy to see so many people interested in her bakery today. When she had first opened up shop she didn’t expect it to take off in the way that it did but she was forever grateful for it. “I don’t see why not honey! It’s not against the cookie rules.”

Honestly, he didn’t like to go in places where he was expected to buy things. He was a big fan of the five finger discount if he were being honest but the moment he set foot in the building he knew he would have to dish it out because he just couldn’t bring himself to steal from the nice woman behind the counter. Son of a bitch. “Huh? Oh. Yeah. I guess a regular chocolate chip cookie and one white chocolate macadamia?” He’d share with Shona he guessed.

Everyone who walked into Kaya’s shop couldn’t always afford what was presented. She understood that better than most considering she had build her shop from the ground up. She had a big heart and when it came to the younger generation she couldn’t help but to be compassionate. “Sounds good!” Kaya smiled brightly, reaching into the case and handing over the cookies he had asked for in a small brown paper bag. “Don’t worry about paying sweetie, It’s on the house, okay?”

Empty nest syndrome was real. Kaya’s baby was all grown up and having his own adventure somewhere close without her. Truth to be told it stung, it had been her and Reuben ever since he was born. It was them against the world. Now she had to find herself again. Kaya wasn’t really sure who she was if she wasn’t being a mom. So she threw herself into her shop, staying late making baked good after baked good. With her hands busy she didn’t have to think about much else. 

Hearing the bell from her shops front door caught her attention. Kaya quickly fixed her posture and brushed off the excess flour from her blush-pink apron. “Morning! With any purchase you make today you’ll get to choose a free cookie of your choice.” Kaya smiled brightly, motioning her hands over the glass case that held everything and anything sweet.
