let me clear something up, since my family always gets frustrated with me for not telling them what i want for christmas. if you’re struggling with what to get me, get me something that you like, even if it’s something you already have pertaining to something you’re interested in. if i care about you, i care about the things you do and your interests and i want to learn more about them. you play D&D? cool, get me the player’s handbook. you spend your time finding new ways to fight for the BLM movement? awesome, send me your favorite book on Black activists and their work. you’re hella into football? nice, i know nothing about football, join a fantasy league with me. helping me learn more about you and giving me the chance to see you passionate about something is a great gift.

My uncle, who grew up a poor immigrant on a pig farm, became a heart surgeon and keeps marrying into wealth.  His third wife is from old money.  She’s very sweet and I do love her to death but she’s completely out of touch with anyone who is not born wealthy.  She told me “Oh you simply MUST rent a villa in Italy for a summer.  It’s so great.”      Bless my uncle, he just started laughing his ass off and said, “Joan, normal people don’t do that.”
