@ everybody saying puberty blockers are totally safe and reversible: have you ever read the prescription insert for Lupron? Because I have! I’ve even actually been on it! And guess what? ADULTS are only recommended to be on it for a maximum of 12 months of their entire life.

So for everyone claiming that it’s safe as a puberty blocker for literal children, I ask you earnestly: what the fuck good does one calendar year do to delay a process that takes 5 years? Seriously. 12 months total. And then that’s it. The literal manufacturer of the drug doesn’t even want you on it longer than that, and pharma companies are notorious money grubbers. So, what, are kids actually out here being prescribed this blocker for longer than that? And we’re supposed to applaud this because ~their feelings~? Take your kids to therapy, fuck!!

If a dysphoric puberty wreaks so much mental anguish on dysphoric children, why do you think putting a timed gun to their head to decide whether or not they want to proceed with HRT/SRS is a good idea? Seriously, think about it. They’re already stressed, and if you’re not being medically abusive, you’ll only let them be on the drug for as long as doctors and the drug manufacturer says they should be on it for. So they’re stressed from dysphoria, and now you’re dangling a ticking alarm clock in front of their faces pressuring them into making a literally life-altering physical choice about their bodies that they may not be able to reverse. And I and the rest of the world are supposed to think you’re a good parent?

Oh also, just to make sure everyone is abundantly clear on this, this drug is meant for grown ass men with advanced prostatic cancer. For everything else, puberty blockers, IVF, endometriosis, fibroid treatment, it’s literally being prescribed off book.

It seems like every fellow Lupron patient I talk to has similarly horrific stories about their treatment. The only people who have anything good to say about Lupron are TRAs who’ve never even gotten near it. This ignorance will very likely have an actual body count in the future and it is just maddening watching people be loud about shit they know nothing about that has so intimately fucked my own life up.

But the explanation is legit cool. Way back in the 1930s as public education started to become more standard in the US, a series of English Language Primers were created starring young children named Dick and Jane, their baby sister Sally, and their dog, Spot. The series ran until 1965. In it, you’d see Dick and Jane doing various things and a story made of simple sentences.

The stories are forever embedded in the American psyche, with iconic phrases from the books like “See Spot run” or “Fun with Dick and Jane” still being well-known enough decades later to be turned into movie titles.

Meanwhile, in the UK, the Ladybird imprint of the Penguin publishing house created their own version of Dick and Jane primers in 1964 called Keywords with Peter and Jane featuring a far more British family and their more British sensibilities. The series is still in print and has sold over 80 million books.

Both the US and UK books were often criticized for their not-so-hidden messaging. In the utopian vision of childhood they promoted, mothers wore high heels and stayed at home to clean clean clean, fathers went to work, people of color were invisible, poverty didn’t exist, and everyone everywhere was oh so cheerful and polite. While the US stopped printing Dick and Jane books just as the Civil Rights movement was gathering momentum, the UK has continued to create and publish these culturally out-of-touch books for decades, only occasionally updating egregiously racist or misogynistic images in response to public outcry.

Enter artist and satirist Miriam Elia. In 2014 she launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to create a satirical version of the Peter and Jane books called We Go to the Gallery (pictured above). As the book entered its second printing, Penguin sued her for copyright infringement. She promptly changed the models for Peter and Jane, renamed the characters John and Susan, created her own independent publishing house named Dung Beetle Books, and republished the book with new art to great commercial success.

She now has an entire series of satirical primers called the Dung Beetle Reading Scheme books. Her latest hilariously perfect book is We Do Lockdown, in which Mummy, John and Susan go through an indefinite period of self-isolation during lockdown. In this solitary time, the children are forcibly adapted to the ‘new normal’, where a joyless existence is heroically embraced to save humanity. The children come to have no real-life friends, no education, and are conditioned to see their peers as portable germ vessels.

Are there any equivalents of "gyns" in other languages?

In French we have "sœurcières", it's a contraction of the words "sœur" (sister) and "sorcière" (witch). ie sisters in sorcery and thought crimes 🥰🌟 I'm curious if radfems in other countries have similar words?

when we typically have stuff that is woman only, like organisations, meetings, events, groups, etc. the term wahine toa is often used. wahine = woman/women and toa = warrior. means warrior women. women's festivals, women's career days, women's organisations, self defense classes, etc. use this term.

so, not exactly the same, but i think it has similar connotations, where pretty much only women call other women it and it is meant to be a bonding term like sister. it is particularly used for women in strong or inspiring positions. leaders, elders, women that have made it through a lot, or are trying to achieve something. sometimes mana wahine (mana denoting power, particularly spiritual power) is also used, but i think wahine toa is more popular. it used to be just used for maori women, but as the language has become intertwined with nz culture, you see the term used in all sorts of ways with anything to do with women of all kinds, and it's one of the many maori terms we have that are integrated into english speaking, similar to whanau, mahi, mana, aroha, korero, tamariki, ka pai, kiaora, aoteraroa, etc. using wahine to mean women when speaking english is pretty normal in places with high maori population/influence too.
