Transgenders –Why? And Why not?
After World War 2, the global economy desperately needed to come back on track. That is the time when women began working and joined the clerical forces along with Industrialization. It was the period between 1930-1970, and sadly, the masses abhorred this change on a massive level. For the longest time, the world only accepted anything and everything that was done by males. Females were supposed to sit at home, raise kids and complete the daily household chores.
This is why, it does not come as a surprise when the world, even today, in 2022, cannot accept Transgenders in society. Many countries have legalized LGBTQ, however, the people of those countries themselves turn their faces to the people of these communities.
Have you ever been at a job where you felt it’s just not who you are, not where you belong? Did it feel wrong? What do you do then? You change your job obviously because you feel if you get the work you desire you’ll be happy, and more content.
Similarly, with transgenders, if they are born male, when they grow up, they know it’s not what they feel like, it’s not where they belong. So, what’s wrong if they change their preference? Why is it frowned upon?
It’s about time that we as a society begin to respect everyone’s choices, be it transgender, women not wanting to have kids, or a man wanting to be in the field of fashion.
If anything, we should be more welcoming and understanding of their needs. A transgender is like anyone else, who is a female or male at birth, but grows up to not accept its original gender, which is why they then decide to go the other way.
It goes without saying, that change is not handled very well by society. Especially the elderly Asians are known to be very orthodox. Topics like sex, and sexual preferences, transgenders, etc. are not meant to be discussed in the open. However, there is always a major blowback before any magnanimous matter is even considered. And that is the case with transgenders. What are we afraid of? Will it be so bad if they can get their identification, decent health care and education, and jobs at corporate companies? More than anything else, it can benefit the world greatly if we had their perspective into the corporate domain as well.
A wise man once said “The only true disability is the inability to accept and respect differences”
Let’s make small initiatives as individuals and not desolate what doesn’t appeal to us. There are still villages in India where untouchables are abandoned and thrown out of groups. And on the other hand, India is one of the top growing countries in the world. We need to strike a balance and show the world that we are growing, not only economically but even mentally.
