Hi nort!

Im making an AU right now and the main cast are primarily made of men, I'm very aware that im mostly better at writing men, and i do want to learn how to write women. I've decided that without changing the main cast too much, im gonna write the main protagonists as women.

Im writing you this because i want advice on how to NOT write women, so i can, not make those mistakes and have a better plotline.

- Kudos to you for acknowledging your skills and where you feel you need to improve! Thats the first step into being the best author you can be!!!

The best thing to do when writing characters you know you aren’t adept at is to check your own bias. There are a few times in stories where you can accidentally be writing something stereotypical, going so far left you end up on the right yk?

There are so many times where women characters specifically are kinda written into boxes that check off certain aspects, like a list.

I know this is super vague but lemme explain

When checking your bias, there’s a few pitfalls that come to mind

Does her character revolve around a man?

- Example: Millie from Helluva Boss, her whole motivation is about Moxxie, her husband, her screentime only happens when Moxxie needs her, her episodes revolve around her and Moxxie, all of the lore we do get about her mentions Moxxie

Is her plotline sidelined?

- Ragatha from TADC’s episode, she was the B-plot, barely having enough screentime and when she did it was cut short or moved on from to go into Jax’s perspective on his loss and focusing on how he felt about something bad that happened to him.

(I have absolutely nothing against these shows, these are just common examples I could think of at 9 in the morning!)

Is she just an asset to bolster a man’s plotline?

- Sheba in Quest. She was only there to cheer on Felix and his crush, and left immediately after that

Does she have her own motivations? A story or arc that she can go on for herself?

- Give her a goal! Give her something that happened to her to make it something she wants! Yk like a normal character.

In my opinion: If your girl wants to be a mother thats fine, But that can’t be all there is to her. Make her interesting, give her fears, hopes, dreams, something to strive for something to live for, something she regrets doing so much it destroys her

We’re not perfect, and you can’t avoid EVERY stereotype bc there are literally so many lol, The biggest thing to remember is that a character is defined by what they want and how they are going to get it.

In conclusion: Don’t base a woman’s character on her gender, but don’t IGNORE it either.

There are certain aspects about being a woman that are important to see!

I hope this helps bc it sorta helped me get my own thoughts down!!!

NEW VS OLD MOTM REF ANALYSIS

This might be a long one sorry :P

They turned Mugmans confidence WAYYY the fuck down in this one, he’s looking away as if constantly paranoid. They took away his “voice of reason” which I think is fair. I’m going to say this for a lot of them, but his posture is much more hunched and defensive in the new art, though for Mugman it’s mostly just his shoulders are more squared. He’s much more rectangle shaped overall honestly.

RIP to his parachute pants, you will be missed. I am LOVING his new pose, it’s very foreshadowing if you’ve never seen the character before, and I think this one shows he’s fast on his feet more than the old one did cause he’s literally on the balls of his feet. The chip on his head is very expected, but I’m kind of wondering if their actually going to use it in the comic since it’s literally on his face.

The shoes are a new addition that I adore as well, idk if they’re supposed to do this but they remind me of Sonic’s shoes so until proven otherwise my new crack theory is Cuphead stole a pair of Sonic’s shoes for kicks. Literally.

The way he’s hunched over feels like he’s ready to lunge at any moment and I feel like that’s perfect for him. I’m also really glad they gave us some combat info too, it’s fun to see the difference in the cups styles of fighting with Mugman being long ranged and Cuphead being short ranged.

And ohhhh the bit about being to trusting. I can’t IMAGINE that will come into play AT ALL VERY SOON…

Now Bendys actual design didn’t change that much from what I can tell, though I do like his satchel much more than the backpack he had before. Trust me as a college student who has to carry around a backpack all day ts is NOT FUN. I do also think the new pose with him putting his arm all the way behind his head is a bit more sassy, even if I do feel like he’s about to topple over. Like that they added the fact that he’s one of few demons in town, but besides that not much to say.

SIR. WHERE ARE YOUR SHOES?? But no- this pose is my favorite of the new ones by far. Boris is hunched all the way over his leg, hugging it to his chest in a way that looks much more defensive than the old one that just made him look chill. His tail is on high alert, he’s way scruffier, HES BUFF!! As much as I will miss my lanky boy I do love me some muscle definition. This goes for the cups too but they kinda already had muscles.

Boris’s new card actually gives us WAY more insight on him than any of the other cards, stating his morals as practically black and white and doesn’t even really feel bad about it. I can see this definitely being a character flaw Boris will have to struggle with constantly, especially once they have to actually team up with the cup bros.

They gave her a knee brace instead of a bandage!! I wonder if this is from a prior injury or something more permanent like chronic pain? Nothing much else changed outfit wise but GOD I love this pose. Way more dynamic than the last one, she looks like she’s about to have the best bar fight of her life. One kick from her could decapitate somebody.

Fly said they changed a lot of her description, and yeah it’s a lot more compact now. I like the social cues thing she’s so me. Probably can’t say much else about it since she hasn’t been introduced yet.

ANYYYYYWAYS- I think the new refs are awesome, even tho I’m a lil salty they posted them two minutes after I posted an animation with the old sprites 💔 /lh
