thanks for the tag, @mangoslixes!! i love any excuse to talk abt the reading i've been doing this year lol

books read this year: 37 total, 14 normal style and 23 audiobooks

best book read so far: oh god, this is an insanely difficult question. i'll say a three-way tie between the raven cycle series, project hail mary, and married thrice to salted fish

best sequel read so far: not counting webnovels licensed in english as multiple volumes, best sequel i'd say was the dream thieves by maggie stiefvater. i went CRAZY when i listened to it

new releases not read yet but want to: currently reading vol. 3 of qi wei shang, if that counts? i don't read a lot of new releases nor keep up with them

most anticipated release for second half of the year: rn there's only one book i'm waiting for the release of and that's bridget & gabe are not okay by lex croucher

biggest surprise new favorite author: i was not expecting to love the raven cycle as much as i did, so i'll say maggie stiefvater!

newest fictional crush: i don't really do the whole fictional crushes thing, but my newest (as in most recent) favorite character is song qing shi from misvil!

book that made you cry: oh i cried many times reading married thrice to salted fish. soooo good

most beautiful book bought or received so far: so i don't actually do physical books anymore (no space + don't wanna spend money + reading digitally is much better for me due to my physical disability), but of all the books i've read this year, i'd say misvil vol. 1 has the most objectively beautiful cover

book that made you happy: project hail mary and rereading the disabled tyrant's beloved pet fish made me quite happy!

JOMP BPC - 29th July - This Month's Favourite

I enjoyed everything I read this month but the standout book was definitely The Employees by Olga Ravn. It's so strange and unsettling and beautiful - for such a short book it had a big impact on me. Also - and I say this half jokingly, half seriously - given its focus on industrial relations, the brutal power of employers, who gets to be acknowledged as a person with rights and value and who doesn't etc etc, in a very odd way it's in conversation with Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South. North and South in space - with additional strange alien objects and less romantic yearning!

Mid Year Freak Out Tag 2026

Thanks for the tag @bubblesandpages, I'm sorry it took so long

Number of books you've read so far: Oh not much. I think around 15? I'm a slow reader, so I'm reading through my haul of unread books.

Best book you've read so far in 2026: I have absolutely loved Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno Garcia. It was a birthday gift and it was my first read of the year, and it remains the best one in terms of plot and the way the characters were written.

Best sequel you've read so far in 2026: I haven't picked up any series I'm going to be honest here. I've only read standalone books this year.

New release you haven’t read yet but want to: Yeateryear by Caro Claire Burke because I found the synopsis hilarious, and the Elsewhere Express by Samantha Sotto.

Most anticipated release for the second half of the year: I am honestly not keeping up so I don't have any book I know of that's being released in the second half.

Biggest surprise favorite new author (debut or new to you): I had never read Katherine Arden before even though I had heard of her. I loved the prose in warm hands of ghosts and the way she's woven myth with reality. It was a good read, and I loved every page of it.

Newest fictional crush: I'm gonna lock it in with the duo that took over everyone's minds this year. Rocky and Grace.

Book that made you cry: Orbital by Samantha Harvey. I never really finished it because I kept getting panicky dreams about being stuck in space, but a 10/10. It's a tiny book but it packs a punch, and I love the way grief is written.

Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received): A set of lord of the rings, which are bound all pretty and are pocket sized. Also the pocket sized version of the Hobbit. I'm currently devoting my time to this adventure with a tumblr mutual, but I'm so slow at reading it that I feel bad.

Book that made you happy: project hail mary!!! It made me happy because cosmic hope as a genre is always welcome in this house.

What books do you need to read by the end of the year? Quite a few. To name a few:

i hate you, er ha, nothing could ever make me fucking read you, i want you DEAD. they filmed the live action but it never made it out of the vault and past the censorship board. neither did the tgcf live action, but i'm holding out hope for a someday release now that there's a rise in loophole chinese bl shows. and i've got my sneaky little hands on the tgcf epubs, but thanks for the offer!!

and yessss, you did get me into the white vault!!! it's one of my all time faves, i've listened to it 3x over. made it through 9eps of goshawk and then life got busy and then i fully forgot abt it until right now

Er Ha was the worst, it gave me nightmares. They also straight-ified the live action from what I remember ALSO NO SURPRISE IT DIDN'T SURVIVE THE CENSORSHIP BOARD WITH THE AMOUNT OF FUCKED UP STUFF IN IT

I mean I was surprised they made mo dao zu shi tbh, but then the actors went through a lot of shit later. The only complaint about TGCF I have is that they did not make Xie Lian muscular as hell like that man used to break boulders on his chest bffr 🤧
