Tomorrow's Harvest: A VHS Fan Video from Cheyne Taylor Bush on Vimeo.
Around 2013, I was obsessed with Route 66 lore, and the ghost towns that littered its once great path of Americana. I had been driving around in these locations, and filming and photographing them for their, what in my eyes was, beauty. I was also with Boards of Canada and the beauty of their electronic sound, as I had been since 2005 when I was introduced to them by a close friend.
Well, in May of that year, when an out-of-nowhere tweet on Boards of Canada's twitter account appeared with just a date and a Pacific standard time, and an image of a location that turned out to be in California, only a few hours from my location, I decided to see what was going on. It turned out to be the infamous listening party at an abandoned water park, that was documented in the Warp Records promotional video for their new album, "Tomorrow's Harvest." After this experience, I decided it made sense to utilize some of my gained knowledge to use the locations I had pinpointed in concert with the new BOC album, in some kind of visual work.
Upon the album's release, I drove around to different locations, in my own city, in neighboring areas of Southern California, to find locations that aesthetically matched the album as I experienced it, and used a VHS-C camcorder to film the locations. It's raw, edited entirely in the camera with the exception of black at the end added in post production.
I transcoded it at CalArts, where I was studying film and video, and left it in my library of projects. I got focused on my thesis film and ended up forgetting about it. I haven't touched it since. But I decided it was time to at least post it for people to see and decide if it works, or honestly if it's even any good.
In earnest, I do hope you enjoy. Thank you.
Well everyone. I’m proud to bring you, the short film Jeffrey. Please, enjoy. Watch it in the dark.
