A few select images from Casa Cruz. Fidel and Maria Luisa create some amazing museum quality wool tapetes in Teotitlán de Valle, Oaxaca. Hand spun wool, all natural vegetable and mineral dyes. 

I could only post these select cropped images, as thievery of design is commonplace with these amazing Zapotec weavings, not only in Oaxaca but now the threat of Chinese knockoffs. Will post come more detailed images later.

Javier Martinez Mendez' story is an interesting one. Javier was a full time mechanic/gardner in Nuevo Casas Grande and started  potting just a few years ago. This year,  the annual juried show held by the state of Chihuahua (The Concourso) awarded Javier 1st Prize for his class (scribed pots) propelling his to a new recognition for this young Mata Ortiz potter. 

Javier is the first Mata Ortiz potter to use the Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) theme. After hand forming the pots (typical of all Mata Ortiz pottery) Javier coats the pots with  dark coating, then burns them on an open fire (also typical of all Mata Ortiz pottery) to "fix" the color. His etching tools are nothing more than common nails sharpened to a fine point.

This is my first tumblr. post, showing the doorway to our gallery pre Hurricane Sandy. This opening hasn't been reopened officially since Sandy passed, as the wooden doors are still warped to the degree that they will not close completely. We're starting this tumblr. presence in an effort to reach out to the design community and architectural concerns who also place products.

We specialize in the direct import of museum quality Zapotec weavings from Oaxaca, MX, and Mata Ortiz pottery from Chihuahua, MX. The weavings are shipped direct from the artisans and the pottery is collected directly by us from the artisanos in Juan Mata Ortiz. We also have a number of other items from Mexico that are museum quality works, we hope to post images of them n the future. Thanks for taking a look.
