PSA: Mutual Starter Calls
We all usually get it, we’re a mutual only blog and we have some people liking a starter call. It happens, but very few people consider that most of the time when this happens, it’s not because they didn’t read our rules and are disrespecting us, it is because Tumblr has made it hard to see who’s mutual and who’s not. Especially for side blogs and mobile users.
Before you make that angry post about being a mutuals only, remember that there is a human being on the other end on the other blog. They probably wasn’t sure if you were mutuals or not and wanted to RP with you! Instead of getting nasty, it’s probably best to approach them and tell them you are mutuals only. If you can’t approach people to tell them that, usually a soft/hard block works too. Because in MOST people’s rules, if you’re not following them back after a week, they unfollow! Most people don’t want to be following people they are never going to RP with.
It’s very tough on mobile users, because we can’t SEE who’s were mutuals with. I and other people can be mobile bound and see a starter call and go ‘Oh I want to RP with them! I’ll like their starter call.’ It hurts when we get excited and wanting to RP with someone, only to see a angry post about liking their starter call. Even when the post ISN’T about me, it bothers me to see people get so angry about a non mutual liking their starter call.
People making posts about me, and seeing other people making posts about it, I have stopped liking starter calls mostly and I bet other people have to. I have probably missed out on a LOT of potential RP partners because of this, an so have others.
So bare in mind before you post an angry post, there’s a GOOD chance that we’ve read your rules and everything, it’s just that people weren’t sure if you were mutuals or not and figured ‘no harm, if we’re not mutuals they’ll ignore it!’ Mobile users are a thing, and they can’t see mutuals.
TLDL: Human beings are behind a blog. Before you get bent out of shape on a non mutual liking your starter call, consider the fact they may not be able to SEE if you’re mutuals or not. Be kind when you talk, because harsh words CAN hurt people, even if it’s not intended for them.
