The Aishalton Petroglyphs are ancient rock carvings found near Makatau Mountain in southern Guyana, dating back to as early as 5000 BCE. They offer a vivid glimpse into the lives and beliefs of the region’s earliest inhabitants.
The petroglyphs are scattered across rock formations and are known locally as timehri. They were extensively studied in the 1970s by Guyanese anthropologist Dr. Denis Williams and he identified 686 distinct petroglyphs, which primarily depict biomorphic forms—humans, animals, and plants—as well as geometric patterns. Williams also uncovered 84 stone tools used to create the carvings, marking the first discovery of such tools in Guyana.
The petroglyphs are believed to reflect the intimate relationship between early inhabitants and their environment. Their symbolic and figurative style has led scholars to classify them as the “Aishalton type,” a unique category of prehistoric art. These carvings not only serve as archaeological treasures but also as cultural markers for the Wapishana people who inhabit the region today.
Guyana is the only country in South America where English is the official language. It's home to the majestic Kaieteur Falls and vast untouched rainforests.
