WIP headcannoned Kougaiji being Indian and having grown up in the Delhi Sultanate era given the location of Houtou Castle 500 years ago and oops my hand slipped.
A little snapshot of passive aggressive niceties from 500 years ago at Houtou Castle, because while Rasetsunyo accepts her husband taking on a concubine as just the way Things Are back then, THIS ONE triggers her alarm klaxons and she doesn't appreciate Gyokumen's mild obsession with her son nor the woman's emotional neglect of Lirin, who innocently mirrors her mother's real feelings for the queen.
Feelings Kougaiji doesn't appreciate one bit, and he'd be lying if he said he didn't quietly resent his father for bringing another woman and her brat home to disrespect his mum (even as he grows to accept and adore Lirin).

Gyokumen definitely the favorite concubine—purple was not an easy colour to obtain for dyes 500 years back.
Red chosen for Rasetsunyo to mirror her son, and also to mark her as more of a regal Lady Of War compared to Gyokumen.
Elements of both Kougaiji’s future outfits (black jacket with silver detail, full-white top/pants underneath) fitted into a single piece. Headcanon; he’s worn those silver/gold circlets on his head since he was old enough to walk because his dad wanted him to feel and prepare for the ‘weight of the crown’.
Lirin explicitly not dressed like current Lirin at all because Gyokumen treated her as more of a dress-up doll than a daughter when she was still baby and desperate for mama’s attention.
(More personal headcanon because babygirl is not safe from getting battered with the Oooof stick; Lirin’s birth being so hard on Gyokumen that she hasn’t been able to bear another child after, and she’s passive aggressively resented her daughter since for not only not having the sense to be born the Right Gender to contest for the throne 500 years back—partly why she’s a little sickly obsessed with Kou—but also wrecking her body. Which is why it’s easy for babygirl to get guilted into things like Getting Experimented On even if she adores Big Brother Kou and is aware mama hates her, because there’s a part of her that thinks she deserves that hate)

Dear friends of Palestine, friends of Gaza and friends of my family in Gaza!
FINALLY!!! We are at 99% of our goal in our campaign to evacuate the living hell of Gaza and rebuild our life in Ireland!
While people post Eid outfits, food, and family photos, my family in Gaza is trying to survive another day of bombs, hunger, fear, and unbearable heat.
There is NO safe place left in Gaza.
The bombardment continues every single day.
The explosions never stop.
And now summer has turned the tents they live in into literal ovens.
Imagine trying to sleep inside plastic and fabric under a burning sky while drones and airstrikes continue around you.
This is NOT a temporary hardship.
My family has lived through this nightmare for more than two years.
Two years of displacement.
Two years of terror.
Two years of watching their lives collapse piece by piece.
I am in Ireland, studying and trying to build a future, while every day I fear getting the phone call that my family did not survive the night.
We have already come such a long way thanks to the incredible support from friends of Gaza and Palestine around the world. Truly, we would never have made it this far without you.
And now we are VERY close to reaching our final goal.
Our only goal is to evacuate my entire family from Gaza to Egypt temporarily, and then reunite safely together in Ireland.
Please do NOT abandon Gaza and my family because the headlines got quieter.
Please don’t stop caring because the world moved on.

Despite ICJ genocide warnings, 51 nations kept arming Israel, even after pledging to halt support.
A months-long Al Jazeera investigation has found that military-related goods originating from at least 51 countries and self-governing territories continued entering Israel after the ICJ’s warning of a plausible risk of genocide in Gaza.
Based primarily on an analysis of Israeli Tax Authority (ITA) import data between 2022 and 2025, and supported by customs records and freedom of information requests, the investigation traced military supply chains linked to countries across Europe, Asia, North America and South America. All named countries are signatories to the Genocide Convention.
In some cases, the military-related goods originated from countries that had formally imposed arms embargoes on Israel or had partially suspended arms supplies to the country.
In fact, according to the ITA data, arms imports increased after the ICJ ruling, with the largest share falling under the category of munitions.
The five largest countries of origin for military-related goods entering Israel - the United States, India, Romania, Taiwan and the Czech Republic - all recorded increased shipments during the war.

Patrick Wilken, a researcher at Amnesty International, said the scale of Israel’s military campaign made such international support indispensable.

OKAY STRAP IN because this is one of the WILDEST stories in aviation history.
In 1990, a British Airways BAC One-Eleven, captained by Tim Lancaster and co-piloted by Alastair Atchison, was cruising at 17,000 feet.
Around 15 minutes after take-off, flight attendant Nigel Ogden entered the cockpit to bring the pilots something to drink. One second everything was fine. The next second, the pilot's side window blew out from the force of the pressurized cockpit. Even though he was strapped in, the force of the explosive decompression ripped the captain out of his chair and pulled him though the window.
The flight attendant immediately leapt forward and grasped the captain's belt. The force was so strong - due to the plane's speed - the captain slipped and was pulled almost entirely out of the plane, but the flight attendant caught his leg. The captain laid on the roof, then the side of the fuselage (the above image is an inaccurate recreation - the side window was smashed) and the flight attendant's entire arm was soon outside of the plane, gripping him.

At the same time, the event caused the autopilot to disengage, and the captain's body hitting the flight controls caused the plane to enter into a deep dive. The throttle was set to full power and could not be accessed due to debris, meaning the plane was descending rapidly. The co-pilot, experiencing hypoxia, fought to control the plane's dive while allowing it to continue descending to a level the passengers/crew could breathe at. He attempted to contact air traffic control, but the wind made communication impossible, so he broadcast a mayday signal. Finally, he was able to re-engage the autopilot and level the plane out at a breathable altitude.
Soon, the flight attendant's entire arm was burned from wind shear and frostbite, and his grip began to slip. The other attendants entered the cabin to see what was wrong and took over holding the captain's body. Seeing the blood covering the windows from the captain's severe wind sheer burns and frostbite, the attendants and co-pilot knew he was dead. However, they could not let his body go because it could smash into the wing, horz stabilizer, or engine, and bring the plane down.
For 30+ minutes the co-pilot flew a jet plane with an OPEN WINDOW and his co-worker's body hanging along the side of the plane. Finally, clearance to land from ATC came across over the sound of the wind and the flight attendants were able to dislodge the captain's ankles from the flight controls without letting him go. The co-pilot successfully landed the plane.

BUT HERE'S THE KICKER: when they reached the ground and evacuated, they realized THE CAPTAIN WAS NOT DEAD.
He SURVIVED being outside the fuselage of a jet airplane traveling 550mph at 17,000 feet. His only injuries were extensive - but mostly superficial - frostbite and windshear burns, bruising, fractures in his hand, and shock. He has since stated that he remembers the event and was conscious for much of the time he was outside of the fuselage. The only other injury was the flight attendant's frostbitten/windshorn arm. Captain Tim Lancaster returned to flying five months later.

Why did this occur? Because the plane had received maintenance the day before, and the maintenance supervisor did not check he was using the correct screws in re-installing the windscreen.

Just a note that I was wrong - it was the front pilot's windscreen, not the side-window! I'm used to looking at Boeing windows with different positions :)

The ‘maintenance supervisor did not check the bolts’ is technically correct but ignores the amount of stuff that had to go wrong for that to happen.
1: the supervisor was the one doing the bolts (I think there was a staffing issue) and so did not have to check the work that he did
2: the window was not on the list of vital components that need to be checked by someone else even if the supervisor does it.
3: the parts store where he had to go to get the bolts was badly lit and had bolts in the wrong drawers.
4: the wrong bolts and the right bolts are almost indistinguishable by sight.
5: the correct tool to put the screws in was not available so they had to do some lite bodging to get the screws in. By this I mean it was still a torque wrench and they checked it released at the right point but the correct socket did not stay in place or something like that.
6: any slight differences between the right bolts and the wrong bolts were hidden because of the tool they were using (which would have worked perfectly if they were using the right bolts).
If one of those things had not happened then the plane would have had the right bolts when it took off.
^ absolutely critical edition and a great example of what’s known in risk analysis as the Swiss Cheese Model.

In this diagram, three hazard vectors are stopped by the defenses, but one passes through where the "holes" are lined up.”
Accidents in complex systems are very rarely one person’s fault and my original post indeed oversimplified the incident for the sake of telling a straightforward story. This was not the case of one bad maintenance worker; this was a systematic failure. The holes lined up and a tragedy nearly occurred because profit (short staffing, poor maintenance facilities, poor training and tools) was prioritized over safety at several layers. Any additional degree of safety would have prevented this from occurring.

Basic background info: I'm a disabled enby who is the sole caregiver for my elderly disabled mother and We are Homeless. The area where we live is being gentrified to all hell and its made it near impossible to find affordable housing. We're staying in a hotel because its the safest option we have.

Moms SSI is our only stable income, though I have Redbubble and Ko-Fi shops where I sell my art and I am looking for other work but being chronically ill and disabled makes it difficult.

Flash discussion on Saiyuki Discord bc I think that the “500 years in suspended animation” shit Kougaiji and Lirin got hit with doesn’t really get explored, which is TRAGIC considering the potential for hilarity + angst + either Sanzo or Gojyo pulling some “doth thou mother knoweth you weareth her drapes” nonsense on Kou mid-battle after they hear him speak for the first time and it’s clear Yaone’s/Dokugaku’s Modern Language Lessons are still a work in progress.
Going off that, the same situation might apply for Goku, who realistically would be speaking in tongues or another dead language when Sanzo finds him (though given that Sanzo comes from a monastery background, it’s probably the equivalent of finding an odd kid speaking old Latin when you’ve been studying the language extensively as part of your order)
(Also the idea that Kou and Lirin are closer for this because they end up with their own little language few, if ANY remaining in the castle can understand)
