Just a 50,000 gallon cistern at Chanticleer Garden | Was asked a great question about rainwater collection on here a while ago and wanted to share Water consumption has increased over the last half-century. The average American household uses 300 gallons of water per day at home. Around 70% of water is used indoors and the rest is used outdoors. Outdoor use is even higher in dry areas. _ To reduce potable water use for irrigation rainwater collection cisterns, and gardens can be implemented to mitigate the problem. _ Setting up a cistern can be quick and economical, by connecting a barrel to a downpipe from the roof gutter. Another way to do it is to plant shrubs and flowers near the downpipe. _ If you want to avoid a plastic barrel there are other great material options to choose from wood, clay, stone, or metal. One of my childhood habits was to gather leaves, rocks, pine cones etc. and create different forms and shapes. Here are a few ginkgo leaves I gathered from my neighborhood in the fall. _ Gathering things from nature while at a site provides direct ecological information about the context of the site, the natural habitat, what’s non-native vs. native species, and what should be preserved. _ Ginkgo trees are known as the “poster tree”, meaning they are indicators of climate change, because it’s leaves have been falling later in autumn.
