iron lung and Project Hail Mary spoilers

Two space movies from 2026 that are character foils to me:

Movie about a guy being sent to an unknown planet, far from his home which was destroyed/will be destroyed with a distinct lack of choice in his situation, who’s mission could supposedly save the rest of humanity but the likely chance is that he will not make it out of this alive.

but where Iron Lung is a movie that dangles the prospect of Simon surviving against all odds and getting to see the world he’s saving, PHM is a movie that makes it clear time and time again that Ryland Grace will die once his mission is over, and multiple times throughout the film does the audience think THIS is the moment where he or Rocky is going to die. And each time, he survives. Each time, we get more hope that he’s going to keep surviving.

where iron lung had to make us accept that Simon is gonna die (swinging, albeit), PHM dawns it upon you that Ryan is going to LIVE, and now he has to contend with that instead of the inevitable death he was forced into.

THEYRE BOTH FANTASTIC MOVIES ABOUT HOPE AND SACRIFICE AND LOVE AND HUMANITY. GOD THERE IS SO MUCH HUMANITY IN BOTH OF THEIR SITUATIONS 🥲

btw this isn't solely a disability rights issue or an issue about people who are entirely unable to work. you should also be thinking about the people who are regarded as unhireable. transfems are hugely discriminated against in this way, people of color are passed over for less qualified white people, anyone who has any difficulty playing the interview game is less hireable... frankly anyone who made the mistake of pursuing the things they love and now has a degree for a niche field. if you still joke about Jobless People it's because you've fundamentally connected the worth of people to their labor, and specific labor, work that you see as valuable. and while i'm at it stop making fun of people who still live with their parents. asshole.

This is like my version of phanart. I love Dan’s style, and I’m passionate about reducing textile waste by shopping secondhand and making my own clothing. This set is made from a thrifted men’s shirt. It’s not perfect, but I feel very cute in it and I’m excited to wear it this summer!

i am so so gently asking abled storytellers to try this little exercise: consider that maybe the main character doesn't miraculously get through traumatic event number 8277 with minor injuries. maybe they don't make a full, narratively-convenient recovery. there are tangible, long-term effects on their health. they are disabled. there are lots of ways to be disabled, and you can pick whatever makes the most sense. the point is that because they're the main character, they have to stay at the heart of the narrative. what happens to your story after that? just for the sake of this exercise, you're not allowed to have them spiral into helpless depression, or collapse under self-loathing, or turn their story into a quest for a cure or an uplifting recovery narrative. think it through instead. how can you tell this story with the character's disability? what needs to change? are there any reasons why these changes can't happen?

at the end of it, you might change nothing. but I think this is worth doing, because sometimes you'll find that the reason you didn't want your character to have a limp, or lose a limb or sense, or have some kind of SFF-appropriate fantasy disability is because of internalised biases. those are worth challenging & i truly believe that creators miss out on richer stories when they view disability either as a fate worse than death or as nothing more than a catalyst for tragedy.

I dont even think its intentional on their part but gillion and chip straight up cutting jays leg off (and framing it as a bit and not somrthing that is so devastating and terrifying to jay) and then not comforting her, basically paying her no mind, while they try to find something for gillions missing hand and just. Leave Jay on the ground. Stunned and in overwhelming pain. Ignoring her to find something for the guy who is in no immediate danger of bleeding out or dying from shock. Leaving the one other female character to comfort her. When the misogyny seeps through the cracks of everything....

disabled people who do not directly "contribute" to society and need large amounts of care and resources to survive deserve not only to survive but to have comfort, stability, and fun within their lives while they do. no compromises.

I've kept this blog mostly as a faceless drawing account, but I feel like at this point I should talk more about art related things I believe in. right now, I've been more and more annoyed by the way artists approach merch and their reactions to criticism

First of all, and I'll be blunt: the entitlement towards cheap global south labor from indie artists is insane. You can place whatever marginalized identity in your shop, it does not give you the free pass to hire manufacturers that refuse to inform you about the wages and labor protections of their workers. If the only way that you can do x product is like that, then you don't deserve to have x product as a merch option.

Enamel pins, makeshift plushies, acrylic stands, shitty tshirts and apparel... why is our community filled with dropshipping slop whos production involves labor abuses and environmental damage? why are we constantly playing dumb to these manufacturers being shady and then getting surprised they get in labor scandals? why are we coddling artists that its ok to exploit others for profit because a smol bean who just has no choice or responsibility ever?

If you aren't making your merch by hand or making sure the people making it for you are being paid properly, then you should get another job.
