Stephanie had just moved, and, picking up the last of her suitcases, she ran off, until the suitcase jammed into one of the floor’s unevenness, flapping to the side and banging on someone “oops! Sorry!”

“-- Ah, mon dieu!” exclaimed Enjolras as he belatedly sprang out of the way. “-- Ah, non, mademoiselle, it is no problem, I have had far worse in the way of ah...the...heaviness. Do you require any assistance, mademoiselle?”

          eyes slide about the park, examining surroundings. one observation, particularly potent, sits uneasily with the boy: the unnerving reality that nobody he has seen, here or anywhere, has a quirk of any kind to be seen. what is going on here? eighty percent of the population should have a quirk of some sort. is this a community of people without quirks, maybe…?

           shakes his head, dismissing the possibility. there’s no way that a community this large can exist and only be comprised of quirkless people, not when the ratio of quirkless people to the whole population is one to five. something’s not right. he considers the circumstances that brought him here. a villain, most likely, acting stealthily, with a quirk that could transport him here. but… izuku can’t be sure where ‘ here ’ is.

          ‘ hey. ’ he stands up and approaches the nearest person, speaking in english. ‘ is everyone here quirkless? ’

“-- Ah, monsieur, I...am not certain that I am understanding the question...? What is this...quirkless...?”

Erica let out a little snort at the miscommunication. Tiny wisps of smoke escaped her nose, tickling her triggering a few chuckles. “Train: to prepare for something.” She explained, flicking the ashes off the end of her cigarette. “To better yourself, normally in a physical area. Simply? Exercise.” 

Enjolras took a long drag from his cigarette. “-- Ah, merci, Erica. I was unaware of the intended meaning. I suppose it would indeed be a very useful thing, oui?”

Padme gave a nod of understanding as he explained –– the circumstances were certainly nearly the opposite of her own as she had been voted into queenhood at fourteen, but they had both been busy nonetheless. “Well, whatever the purpose, it seems to be serving you well now,” she offered. “Your government, did you succeed in working toward equality?”

“-- Merci, madame,” was Enjolras’ response as he considered how to answer her question, idly continuing the piece. Lorde would be proud. “-- Not in my lifetime, madame. I am French, and not from this...era. I lived in the...beginnings of the 1800s, madame, and we had a king who used the labour of my country to serve only himself and the rich. I died in protest of this. Now, there is no king, and the people choose their governance.”

“it’s a good thing to do, I’m sure, but I fear he’ll do it during lessons at school, and myself and Grantaire will be visiting the school daily for interrupting the class.” She laughed slightly, because as annoying as it would be, she was still elated that her brother would be getting an education in this strange town she had found herself in.

“-- Then the school’s teachings would be wrong. Forcing its students to remain silent when they have legitimate queries or concerns is one of the hallmarks of an unjust society, and should not be fostered in the educational system.”

“I don’t,” she answered honestly with a shake of her head. “I practically came out of my mother practicing politics, and haven’t had much time for other practices throughout my career.”

Enjolras nodded. “-- This I understand, madame. Before I came to America, I started the working day at five on the clock in the morning, and did not finish it until either six or eight in the evening, whereupon I spent all my ah...free time, working towards the equality of man and the severance of unjust governance. Piano was simply an insistence of my parents, for whatever unholy purpose.”

as the other missed the note, cassie gave an apologetic smile, though the other probably couldn’t see it. “no need to thank me.” she spoke before shaking her head. “sadly, no. i can play guitar but that’s about it.”

“-- Ah, oui, the guitar is a beautiful instrument. It is very ah...versatile?”

As such, as he played the piano, he idly tapped out the opening notes, figuring out the subsequent harmonies and melodies as he went. It wasn’t that complicated. Still, when he got to the chorus, it came out under his breath, as, “– And we’ll never be royals…”

Padme listened to the man play against the keys of the piano, a soft smile stretched across her cheeks. She had always enjoyed the sound of music, even if often she was so busy and preoccupied she didn’t have time to enjoy it properly. “You sound quite lovely,” she complimented.

Enjolras’ eyes flickered over towards her, but he continued to play, inclining his head in thanks. “-- Merci beaucoup, madame. Unfortunately, I am somewhat out of practice. Do you play?”

Grantaire couldn’t help but smile at the muffled apology. Truth was that it hadn’t only been Enjolras who had been distant, he himself had been stuck in a ‘do not disturb’ phase and barely anyone had seen him - work people aside. “I do believe I know you well enough at this point to know that it is nothing personal. But I fear you haven’t been the only absent one and I need to apologize, too. I needed to be… alone for a bit but I’m feeling better and I’ve missed you.” He paused for a short moment to place a kiss on top of Enjolras’ head. “I have not really done much but paint, drink and work,” he added with a shrug.

“-- I have missed you too, R. And I’m glad to know you are feeling better.” A pause, “-- The cats have missed you also.”

At the voice behind him, Enjolras missed a note, the discordant sharp clashing violently with the major fifth. He carried on, however, as he had been taught to do. “-- Merci, mademoiselle,” was his response, with a light incline of his head. “-- Do you play?”

“And that is why I alway make sure to practice dodging when I train,” Erica said with a snort, finally looking down again as she brought her cigarette back up to her lips. 

Hesitation. A frown. Enjolras cast his eyes towards her, curious and confused. “-- ...Mon amie...’train’. I am not sure what it is that you... Locomotive?”

Enjolras considered her proposal. “-- I am not entirely certain why, but also see no reason to not go for a walk, as you say. I am called Enjolras, mademoiselle.”

“Trick is not ticking them off enough to shoot you,” Erica admitted distractedly as she still focused up at the sky. What would she give for a storm to come through town? Just a small break in the peace and quiet; something to relieve the tension.
