putting Downstairs on this album has Got to be one of the most insanity inducing things they've ever done. a 14 year old demo whose lyrics feel straight off tyler's solo album that josh has insisted he hold on to after multiple attempts to delete. because that music is the music that initially brought josh to tyler so of course of Course he likes it.
of course the guy who heard time to say goodbye and blew his whole life up to play in tylers band loves this fucking song. to the point of asking him to rework it and convincing him to put it out on an album that carries the weight of wrapping up a decade long storyline surrounding not being able to beat the demons in your own head alone. while the entire song is begging for forgiveness for becoming something you don't want to become and hiding that thing away.
a song where he is speaking directly to a higher being telling it to take everything that he is as long as he is seen on the album that ends with a hidden track saying that he has looked into the eyes of his demons and been found anyway. a five and a half minute guilt track wedged in between a single about broken promises and a joyous surrender to love.
How Fucking Long has josh had the drums for this song in his head. what did it sound like before they reworked it for breach. when will i find peace. fuck.
okay, it's been a week (kinda)
favorite song off breach?
city walls
rawfear
garbage
downstairs
robot voices
center mass

Breach killed me
twenty one pilots is fun because you never know if tyler joseph is singing about god or his wife or his bandmate or his kids or his audience or god forbid a secret sixth thing
interesting that every other time tyler has had his head shaved in a msuic video he was the one shaving it - except for the snap back video where some mysterious disembodied hand does it to him
ohhhh i need to talk about this thank you for sparking this thought
ok so let's think about this in order. in car radio, he shaves his own head while discussing how when he's alone in a silent car (which is silent without his consent), his intrusive and/or depressing thoughts come through and he struggles to be with himself. he shaves his own head - maybe because it's one of the things about him HE has control over and can do without damaging himself. it's a new beginning.
in levitate, his head is being shaved by banditos, as @drcaspiancrow mentioned. he's in a safer place, ready to start over and escape what happened while his hair grew before then. the banditos are supporting him and encourage his new start. these are friends.
in snap back, one disembodied hand in black shaves his head. imo this shows the stark difference between tyler and his negative thoughts (see the mirror conversation), borrowing from blurryface motifs about him and his negative thoughts being two different things. it's separate from him because he doesn't want to be doing this. he doesn't want to backslide, but this disembodied force decides it's time because yes, he's starting over, but this time he's restarting the escape from the thing that made him need the separation in the first place.
shaving his hair seems to represent a paradigm shift, but who is doing it could represent which direction that shift is going in.
he’s puttin’ on a drum show
feel it
tyler screaming and crashing out in the back to portray how josh is actually feeling deep inside oh my GOD
Completed checklist for today
Now they have to let you out of your cage
Feeling stuck between a rock and a home
Two places you do not want to go
Them finally releasing a song that's clearly through Josh's pov but it's Tyler signing it. Being the messenger of his best friend's insecurities and fears but singing in the backseat , never taking center stage. Just so that , when Josh actually sings ( HOLY MOTHER OF JOCALS) it's to own his narrative and to declare his want for change . Visibly mouthing it for us to see towards the end. Ready to move forward.
you😭don't😭quite😭mind😭how😭long😭red😭lights😭are😭taking😭
tyler scream from the line...i will never recover i fear
new fun trend: take this quiz and tell me your score
