soundbooks a text to sound project
soundbooks is a data analysis project that converts the text of books, poems, and essays to sound and an accompanying visual.
The program reads through the supplied text. Each word is logged, played, and shown as a circle on the graph. The pitch of the note is determined by the frequency of the word in the text (if the word appears a lot, the pitch of the note is higher). The length of the note and size of the circle are determined by the length of the word. The program was written in Processing. Words that meet certain requirements may be read by Google’s TTS service. The user is able to turn on and off the notes and voice components using the interface components.
I used controlP5 for the interface elements, minim for the sound, and adapted amnonp5’s Processing code for accessing Google’s TTS service. The texts come from Project Gutenberg and the Poetry Foundation.
With this program, poems and other short texts are a low, ambient hum since none of the words appear enough to warrant any higher pitches.
I am considering continuing this project by yanking this out of processing and putting it on the web. Processing wasn’t really made for interfaces and this could make this a fun tool for exploring texts! I may also do a small physical computing project where I take the sound and embed it into the intended book.
My code for the project may be found here.

"Berg Cloud is a three-part kit for developers, prototypers, and muckers-about alike that makes connecting your custom hardware to the cloud a cinch. The first part is the Berg Cloud Devshield, which plugs into Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and mbed single-board microcontrollers, assigning a unique device key to the type of device you've made and what it does." @ Fast Company’s Co.Design
