We would have got you into meetings, Emily and I, we could have helped you.” Mason was getting frustrated, and when he’d told him to get his daughter he signed. “Where are you staying?” 

“Her dying all over again, who knows if we can go out of town?” He hadn’t tried it. So, how would anyone else know --- if they died, they died. “Would it have?” Marcus asked seriously. “Resnik house. I’ll let Elena know you’re on your way. You’ll have to come and knock on the door.” He wasn’t going to trust anyone other than family and Naomi right now.

Marc stared at Sage silently. “Yeah, you’re right.” He responded. “Why are you so interested, anyway?” It wasn’t like any of this had to do with her.

“There is going to be a protest or a rise against him any day now.” She didn’t say that with confidence, her tone revealed in fact just how nervous she was about the whole city.  Naomi looked at him as he wouldn’t take in that his family probably cares about him. “Who?” She asked although the question was answered soon after. Hearing his story she could understand why his family hated him. Though she’s made mistakes too, some pretty big ones and her friends have eventually come around. “I’m not going to pretend I know if your family will forgive you, but if you give them time I can only hope.” She was speaking for herself as well. She still doesn’t know if Norah ever found out she’d slept with Darren. The guy she was crushing on for years. “I’m no saint, so I know I've fucked up a couple times, but that seems to be my best guess.” 

It couldn’t come soon enough, honestly. This was just ridiculous. He couldn’t hide in Naomi’s house forever... “My niece. I thought I saw her not that long ago but it wasn’t real.” God, he missed her, he missed their family actually being a family. “Sorry. ---.” He trailed off in thought. “It would take a lot, for my ex-sister-in-law to forgive me.” Emily was not happy when she saw him, she kept blaming him, even took him to see the grave sites of Elena as well as his own. “Maybe eventually but probably not before I get thrown into that prison.”

Hearing that his daughter was safe was one of the most relieved and heartbreaking moments of his life.”Thank god,” Mason sighed as he began to break down in that moment, “N-no, I have to see her.” he spoke, “We need to get her out of town or something,” he spoke without really thinking. He sat down on his couch and sniffled as some of the tears were uncontrollable. “Hold on,” He then put the phone down and wiped down his face, he let out another sigh and placed the phone back at his ear. “I don’t know what you want me to say, Marcus,” He spoke after sniffling for hopefully the last time. “I’ve lost her for two years. I lost you for two years, I lost Emily all because of that accident. All you had to do was talk to me, that’s all you had to do.” 

Marcus swallowed hard. “What if you leave and --- something happens?” He asked Mason. “Maybe hiding her would be your best bet.” Like he was hiding himself, Naomi was hiding him away. Waiting as the silence fell between them on the line, Marc convinced himself that maybe his brother didn’t hate his guts. “Talk to you? No.” He sighed, closing his eyes and bowing his head. “It wouldn’t have changed anything, Mason...” No one understood why he’d fallen into that spot, not even himself. So how could Mason have helped? "Just come and get Elena."

“Her lawn guy?” she questioned looking at him then surrounding him. “Where’s the lawnmower?” She asked since he didn’t have any gardening tools or the usual dirty clothes that came with it. She could tell he was lying, and instead of simply calling him out, she’d been curious what his reply would be? See how creative this guy really was. 

“Yep.” He responded, placing his hands at his hips. “Actually I’m checking out her trees, seeing if they need to be trimmed or not.” He shrugged. “So, no lawn mower needed for that.”

When Mason heard his daughters name along with the words ‘she’s alive’ Mason didn’t know how to react. “Marcus,” He spoke in a harsh tone still not sure what was about to come out of his mouth. “Is she safe? Where is she?” He spoke, “Where are you?” He spoke gripping his phone so hard he’d thought he’d break it. 

“She is safe, I made her grilled cheese. She thinks that she hit her head at soccer practice.” Marc explained. “We’re at the Resnik house. I think you should really try to calm down before you drive over here, though. Elena is fine, she’s just as perfect as she was before. ---- I’m so sorry, Mase....”

Sage shook her head, “You didn’t.” She spoke almost obviously, she looked him over again remembering him being attractive. She was happy to know he was just as attractive sober than drunk. “Aw, what a shame.” She spoke looking up, “Isn’t this the Resnik house?” She didn’t know them personally, though she knew the neighbourhood well enough. 

“Good.” He offered a soft, timid smile. “Yeah, hopefully I’ll have it back soon.” Probably not. Probably never. “Yeah, it is. I’m actually just --- her lawn guy.” Wow. Really, Marc?

Mason didn’t expect to hear from his brother, “Marcus?” He asked feeling many things “I… okay.” He wasn’t going to hang up. He didn’t plan on it anyway. “What is it?” 

“Elena found me. She’s alive, I didn’t call sooner because I fed her lunch and I didn’t want to freak her out. She’s doing her homework ---.” Even though it was clearly out of date, he just wanted her to fee normal. “I’m staying at a friend’s house, so you can come and pick her up here, just don’t tell her she’s been dead.... at least not in the way you told me that I had been.”

Mason was reviewing some news, trying to find a way to track down his daughter. As he did so his phone began to ring on the other side of the room. He got up when it didn’t stop ringing, he thought it might be Emily. He went to fetch his jacket and picked up the phone without looking at caller ID. “Hello?” He answered probably at the last minute. 

He was about to hang up when he heard Mason’s voice on the other end of the phone. “Mase?” He asked. “Hey --- it’s Marcus, I have something to tell you and before you hang up on me, it’s really important.”

Naomi shrugged her shoulders, “Well someone has to step up, but everyone is too terrified to do anything. If he can build a torture chamber without anyone knowing for the dead, he could do it for the living too.” She spoke fairly quickly as she thought about it in more detail. She stared at Marcus, “Marcus come on.” she urged. “That can’t be true. They must have just been freaked out?” She suggested before hearing him continue. She furrowed her eyebrows gently, she felt bad for him. It was so evident from the sadness in his voice how heartbroken he was about it. “But she’s back? Right? Like you, is she back?” she then shook her head to continue. “They’ll forgive you one day, sure now things are… probably seeing you again made that pain fresh again. Give it time, they’ll forgive you. You’re their family. They have to forgive you.”

“You’re right ---.” The mayor was a real piece of work. He was terrifying, but the fact that people followed him like sheep was even more terrifying. “No, they hate my guts. They’d rather me be rotting in the ground where they thought I was.” Marcus stated without much emotion. Of course it hurt, but he was depressed again and well --- that was that. “I thought I saw her but I couldn't tell you for sure.” That would fix his family, maybe. “I don’t think they should. I took away a piece of them being a prick. Or at least that’s what they told me, I drove drunk and killed my niece. I’m responsible for the person that I loved the most in this entire world’s death. I don’t deserve to be forgiven.”

Picking up the phone, Marcus dialed Mason’s number.Thankfully it was still the same one that he’d always had. “Just pick up ---.” He whispered desperately. He’d much rather deal with his brother rather than his ex-sister-in-law.

“thanks uncle marc.” elena told him with a kind smile. nothing was making sense to her, she had never gotten hurt to the point where she was missing time. and she had been hit in the head with multiple soccer balls, even stepped on by soccer cleats. she just wished she could figure out what happened in the that time gap, and how she got in that field. “i’m dying for a grilled cheese, i haven’t had one in a while.”

“No problem, kiddo.” Marcus smiled. His heart felt so much better, having his niece here --- alive. He knew that he would have to call Mason but he didn’t want to freak Elena out more than she already was. “Perfect, I think I’ve perfected a new way of making them that makes ‘em so much better.” He grinned as he pulled out a skillet and gathered the ingredients for the sandwiches.
