I loved Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet when I was in high school (the drama! the very angsty teens!), but the one thing that bothered me was that Juliet in particular felt like she was just swept along by events rather than having real agency. She makes choices, of course, but even the text itself chalks their love and eventual death up to fate. TWIN DAGGERS was inspired by R+J, but with an eye to give Juliet more agency. In my spin on the tale (and its sequel) the Juliet character is a magic-wielding spy manipulating her Romeo and doing everything in her power to thwart a disastrous fate. Lost River Gorge in NH’s White Mountains inspired the Magi’s hidden underground refuge, the Chambers. We hiked the gorge back in 2012 around the time I first began writing the book, and it absolutely captured my imagination! Most of TWIN DAGGERS takes place in the city of Palinor, but the Chambers is where the remaining members of the Magi faction live when they’re not out on a spy mission.
