Benjamin Poindexter might have a ‘you’ problem. That means that he has been unable to get you out of his mind since the day you were sent to kill him. Nobody—not even Daredevil—had ever come that close to killing him in combat. You were brutal, and that was beautiful.
Dex did what Dex does when there is someone he is interested in. He followed you around. He watched as you bought groceries at the convenience store that was closest to your house.
You treated yourself to a piece of cake whenever you finished a tough job—he could tell by the faint injuries and the change in your pace. Usually quicker, but turned slower and more careful whenever you were tired and hurt.
The more he watched, the more obsessed he became. You were a woman who had been raised to kill, yet you behaved in an oddly ordinary way. Not in the rehearsed way that he tried to behave when he had to lay low—yours was genuine.
You still could be brutal when you wanted to. You took down dangerous operatives that would have required an entire Task Force squad without breaking a sweat. From time to time, you disappeared. You weren’t in your apartment; Dex knew that because he checked. Nor in any of your usual third spaces.
As much as he observed you, there were still some things about you that remained a mystery, and that thrilled and unnerved him in equal amounts.
…
You were well aware that he was watching you. You were more than trained enough to realize when someone lurked in the shadows, tracing your moves day after day. He was the guy with the baseball cap sitting at the far end of the coffee shop where they sold your favorite cake, and he was the figure with a hoodie pulled over his head, standing at the other end of the subway that one night you had returned from a particularly hard job.
By your standards, he wasn’t a threat. He was just a guy with a weird interest, and you had seen worse in the past. He never made direct contact with you, which only made things more interesting.
Lying around in your apartment watching reruns of the same three shows over and over until you receive a phone call with details of whom and when to kill could get boring. You were stagnant, even. Stuck in the same routine, because what else could a former Russian spy do as an occupation? Work at a library? Be a barista? A teacher? Sure, right.
Benjamin Poindexter was about to become the adventure you had been looking for.
…
He showed up at your apartment somewhere in May during a regular night. You were cooking dinner, humming a song under your breath as you mixed the noodles in the pot. Your place had just the right size. Small, but with everything you could need; easy exit through the living room and bedroom windows; good coverage; and a lot of places to hide weapons.
You were ready to sit back on your couch, eat your dinner, and watch one of those reality TV shows that made you fall asleep halfway through the episode. Then came the first knife. You took a step back, watching as it flew right by you and managed to land sharply on your wall. Another marking that you would inevitably have to cover up before your landlord found out.
You grabbed the chopsticks from the counter and held them tightly in your hands; for now, they would suffice as your weapon of choice. You sighed deeply, tilting your head back in frustration. You wanted a quiet evening and a warm meal, not an impromptu fight in the middle of your kitchen.
“Really? Right now?” You asked. There was a figure, hiding somewhere in the shadows near your window. “Can’t we do this later? If you really want to fight, just let me grab my widow bites, they’re in my bedroom.”
You didn’t receive anything in response. “Come here, yeah? Want some noodles? They’re amazing—if you can handle spice, that is.”
“I’m not here to kill you, Y/N.” The man stepped out of the shadows, arms crossed.
“You could’ve fooled me,” you quipped, plating your noodles and plopping down on one of the kitchen’s stools. “Big words for someone who threw a knife at me.”
“I—I just want to talk.”
“Doorbells are a thing, you know. Saying hello on the street is a thing, too, you know. No need to follow me around for weeks.”
“Following you around? What—” He cut himself off because, of course, you had found out. And if anything, him lurking in the shadows of your kitchen was only an argument in your favor.
“Please. I was a child spy. You probably know that, too, don’t you? I know when someone’s following my steps.”
“And you let me.”
You shrugged simply, as if it were no big deal. “I was bored. I’ve been getting these totally dull missions. You can only take down a lab overseas so many times until it inevitably starts becoming repetitive.”
He stayed quiet. Maybe your life wasn’t as relatable as you thought.
“Dex, right? Take a seat. Tell me, how much do you know about me?” There was a gentle smirk on your face as you rested your chin on your palm.
“I couldn’t find much. You’re good at keeping things hidden.”
“Tell me what you know, then.”
“I know that you tried to kill me nine months ago because you were sent by the Red Room. But the Red Room isn’t operating anymore, so you freelance now.”
“Hmm, good,” you nodded and leaned forward. “Who do I freelance for?”
He couldn’t reply. Just as you had expected. Throughout the weeks he had followed you around, you had fed him details about your life. He knew no more about you than what you had let him find out about. You had him right where you wanted him, and Dex was where he wanted to be.
“I like you, Poindexter. I think you’ve got potential.” You looked back at his knife on your wall. He was already starting to make permanent dents in your life. “How about I give you my number, hm? We can stay in touch. Maybe go out for coffee and pretend our lives are normal.”
