MASTERLIST: UNEXPECTED LABOR
Welcome to the NeoGenesis Research Institute; where the boundaries of biology, technology, and human possibility are rewritten every day.
Here, innovation is not a goal...it's a responsibility.
You are entering a space built on precision, collaboration, and the belief that the future of science can be safer, inclusive and more humane. Every discovery made within our walls carries weight. Every breakthrough contains the potential to change not only medicine, but lives.
At NeoGen, we honor the science.
We honor the people behind it.
And most importantly, we honor the futures we are helping to create.
Please step forward with curiosity, work with integrity, and remember; what we build here matters.
Welcome to the next chapter of possibility.
NeoGen's largest conference room, no matter the large scale size, felt like a shoebox, even if it was not filled to the max. Maybe if he put in his resignation now, then he was able to get out of this fucking presentation?
Park Seonghwa sat beside the members of his team--his research team that is, listening to the Board of Directors give their agenda speech for the current meeting held in this shoebox conference room. The young man was a member of the research team in the Reproductive Sciences Research Department at NeoGen, a member of the seven person team currently trying to get their shit together and get their project greenlit.
The team, like state before, had consisted of seven members; Kwon Soonyoung, Jeon Wonwoo, Xu Minghao, Park Seonghwa himself, Kim Hongjoong, L/N Y/N, and Jeong Yunho, the "Dream Team", consistently referred to by Y/N and Soonyoung. Their department often researched into different ways to better reproductive health for both men and women.
But today...today was different.
Over the past few years, the team had been developing a new drug, and it was the whole reason that Seonghwa felt like the room would swallow him whole, since they needed to present it.
The Board all sat together and read through the agenda of the meeting, whereas numerous different scientific research departments awaited for their time to present their ideas of projects. Something Seonghwa always wondered if they needed to psych themselves up for like he did.
"...and from the Reproductive Sciences Research Department, we have Dr. L/N, Dr. Kwon, Dr. Jeon, Dr. Xu, Dr. Park, Dr. Kim and Dr. Jeong presenting...what was it again, Dr. L/N?"
Y/N stood up, bowing slightly. "Uh, a new hormone-genetic therapy, sir."
This caused the room to ripple with murmurs.
"You and your team may present."
The team all stood, following Y/N, even if she was the second-to-youngest, only a month older than Yunho, nobody could deny her intellect. They made their way to the podium in front of the Board, something Seonghwa totally did not find intimidating, and upong reaching it she immediately started organizing her files to begin the presentation.
"If we could safely expand who can carry and nurture life, how could this impact the family planning policies that could help us understand the declining birth rates we face today?"
The room went silent before whispers started slowly getting louder, but she paid no mind.
"What if we could test, scientifically, how biological sex shapes–how a male body, given the right hormonal environment, could carry a pregnancy safely and effectively?"
"Please elaborate further," One of the Directors asked, gesturing her to continue.
"For the past two years we in the Reproductive Sciences Research Department have been, working on a homonal-genetic therapy; Gestarex-MGH17. This pharmaceutical was designed specifically to allow a cisgender male body to safely carry a pregnancy by manipulating hormones, prepare the body physiologically, and support fetal development. "
"Impossible," One of the Directors dismissed, but Y/N didn't let it stop her.
"The goal in which this team aims to achieve is; to test whether a male body can safely carry a pregnancy, monitor physical changes, such as blood volume increase, minor structural adaptations in the heart, and hormonal fluctuations. As well as the question of if it could challenge societal norms and the aid in the birth rate recovery of our nation and in the nation of Japan."
A sound of disagreement and yet also interest went through the room like a wildfire, some disapproving and other intrigued. Seonghwa managed to overhear the Director from a few moments ago claim it is "unnatural" before another takes the floor.
"Have there been any trials performed on this pharmaceutical yet?"
Minghao took the floor this time with a calm and practiced ease, as if he'd been waiting his entire scientific career to do so.
"Yes," He answered. "Rodents; as to test the change in biological male hormone levels, and feline; from which two kittens were delivered perfectly healthy via caesarean section, and the test subject is in perfect health as well."
Minghao wasted no time pulling out photos leading up to a few weeks ago of the kittens, a little orange and a black kitten in perfect health, to the Board. They all took the photos, examining every individual one of the cats' stage of life.
"The current iteration of Gestarex-MGH is split into two compounds," Wonwoo explains. "First; we would have a human cisgender male volunteer and for 90 days, we would administer Gestarex-MGH17 as an injection to deliver stable and bioavailable doses of hormones weekly, and an oral supplement for daily maintenance and supporting co-factors."
The Directors all finished passing the photos around by this point and listened intently as Wonwoo spoke.
"Secondly," Wonwoo continued. "An embryo would be created via IVF, with preferably donated sperm, and as well as a donated egg, preferably from a fertility clinic."
The Board all sat in silence for a moment, turning amongst each other and discussing what has been presented in front of them thus far. Some looked very intrigued, while others not so much.
Well, thought Seonghwa. You can't please or interest everyone.
"Dr. Jeon," One of the Directors spoke up. Wonwoo straightened as he was spoken to. "Has your team found a volunteer per chance?"
Got 'em. Seonghwa thought, looking over to Y/N who met his eyes with a silent hope that this kicks off the way she wanted and hoped.
"We had, yes," Wonwoo explains. "Lim Rohan; 28 years old, he had been screened and found free of anything of concern. However..."
"'However?'"
"As of one week ago," Wonwoo stated carefully. "Mr. Lim has backed out, he withdrew his application and volunteering and has since left South Korea entirely."
The Board whispered amongst themselves, with Seonghwa hearing one clearly say that young man knew this all was wrong.
"As he should." One spoke up. "He knew this is wrong and against the will of nature, all of this is nothing more than a pipe dream that one of you came up with that is inherently wrong."
Seonghwa felt himself grow irritated, wasn't the whole point of NeoGen being founded to push the boundaries of science in all its entirety? Even though the owner and founder is a devout Christian, the man also spent his life pushing the boundaries of biological science in genetics and evolution, but this was too weird? This was too far?
It wasn't a "pipe dream." Y/N spent the better half of a year, working herself to the near grave, until she finally cracked the formula on what could make this possible. From there everything felt like a snowball rolling down hill. Wonwoo and Minghao helped create the formula of Gestarex-MGH, and all 17 current iterations of it. For the better part of two years those three worked relentlessly on this and finally made something that could change the world, if only people were a tad bit more open minded.
"I'm sorry, Dr. Jeon," One of the Board members started, "But without another volunteer found within the next 30 days, we cannot guarantee that this project would get the funding you are all hoping for."
The rest of the group, including Y/N, slumped ever so slightly in defeat. They were right, they needed a volunteer...but that's also why they were meeting with the Board today.
"If I may," Seonghwa raised his hand slightly, all the Board members turned to look at him, and Wonwoo moved as to let him speak at the podium. "I have already discussed this with my team, and now I will speak it freely here in front of you all; I will volunteer."
The silence that followed was deafening. Nobody on the Board could have predicted this...AT ALL.
"Dr. Park," A Director spoke carefully. "You are going to undergo this?"
Every single set of eyes was on him, like they were waiting for him to show any sign of nervousness or weaknes that they could point out and "call his bluff" on. They all erupted, some citing that it's quite brave of him to be human trial number one, others saying he's lying. One even suggested that perhaps his team put him up to it.
But he stayed firm. He stayed unmoved, because he was serious.
He wanted to go through with this.
Yes, like the Board before him, his own team tried analyzing him the night prior to see if he was being 100% honest, but why would he lie about something like this?
"Yes," Seonghwa stated, firm and his voice unwavering. "I will. I also plan on donating my own sperm for the IVF as well."
Once again erupting in split reactions, the Directors spoke amongst themselves and Seonghwa heard a lot of them citing that this is most definitely against nature. He could only roll his eyes internally, because should he do so outwardly, he would risk this whole project. A few ask to see the reports and notes they have about the project and Soonyoung goes up to hand it to them.
All the papers are spread out and read carefully by every one of the Directors. Some praising the work that Y/N, in particular, Wonwoo and Minghao did for this. They all spoke with each other intensely in a hushed manner that made Seonghwa think that they were planning on actually firing all of his team for.
That would probably be the worst thing to happen to all of them. Could you imagine?
Being fired because you dared to test the boundaries of biology and evolution?
It felt like ages standing up on the podium as the 12 member Board spoke amongst themselves in a semi-hushed tone. Seonghwa felt like he was back in High School during the annual spelling bee they held.
Though in that instance he lost by misspelling the word "envisage," thus costing him the winning title.
But with every moment that he stood there longer without the Board coming to the decision, the more he felt the unease spread from his chest to every part of his body.
"We have come to an understanding of the project following the testing of Gestarex-MGH17," One of the Directors spoke out. Seonghwa straightened his posture slightly, as did Y/N, who he knew was waiting for an answer anxiously. "We will begin drafting forms and contracts for each of you, especially for you, Dr. Park, and anyone else that you will need to see the desired success of this project."
Oh, my God. Seonghwa thought, They're actually...
"And the oversight and leadership of this project will fall under Dr. L/N Y/N, with Dr. Jeon Wonwoo and Dr. Xu Minghao as the secondaries. We look forward to the desired success."
"Thank you, sir." Y/N bowed, a ghost of a smile forming on her lips. Seonghwa took her hand in his from behind the podium, and squeezed it tightly.
The group was dismissed to their seats, with each and every one of them smiling to each other that they finally got the outcome they so desired. Seonghwa never let go of her hand, even when they sat down as the next group presented.
"We got this." He whispered to her, and she smiled to him, squeezing his hand back.

1...2...3...
Come on, Y/N, get the steps right.
Two years, training at HYBE for two years and you still struggle a bit with getting the steps just right. Just perfect. It didn't even matter that every morning before the classes even started, working on whatever bullshit choreography they gave you before everyone else.
It didn't matter that you were in here well after hours soaked in sweat and feet damn near falling off after everyone else left. Because when it came down to everything, it was you against 18 others.
At least that's what they told you on day one.
"Hey, noona," A voice said from behind, and looking into the mirror, you found a another trainee, Yucheong. He was a nice enough young boy, from Daejeon originally, and put a lot of his focus on training into his singing. He was really good, you'd always praise him, even when he shies away from the applaud.
"Maybe you should take a break?"
"Why? They're announcing the lineup in a few weeks."
Yucheong sighed as he took a seat next to you on the floor, holding a bottle of cold water out for you to take. You accept the water and thank him quietly, opening it to drink the liquid that immediately cools your burning throat.
The pair of you sit in silence of the practice room, the music since been lowered in volume and no one else around as it's late at night. This was how you two ended up becoming friends in the first place, he had come back from a vocal lesson and found you dancing, perfecting each and every step and movement of the choreo they had given all the trainees on the first week. Yucheong found you just being short on enough cash for a bottle of water and a quick snack, so he bought the water.
He also had that habit of perfecting everything about his singing, the exact one you do.
"Are you scared about not making the cut?" Yucheong asked.
You didn't look at him, because if you did, he would see it all. Every fear and doubt that you had about your ability to make it. To debut and be great. Because he was the same, he didn't look at you either. But you could see the way he drummed his fingers against the hardwood floor. He was nervous.
"Yes."
"Me too."
The two of you sat in a familiar and comfortable silence, the quiet reminding you both that despite neither of you possibly getting to debut with each other, you are still friends regardless. But as you sat there, you began to think about everything else too, including the time.
Then you finally decide to look at the time, almost midnight. You're eyes widen as you quickly get to your feet and begin to pack all your things away. Yucheong blinks in a haze as he registers your sudden urgency to leave.
"Is everything okay, noona?" Yucheong asks.
"Yeah, it's just late and I have an early start tomorrow." You tell him. He doesn't buy it and you know it, especially since on everybody's schedule it was marked as an off day. Yucheong shrugs and picks up his own bag and shuts the light off to the room as soon as soon as you leave, bidding him a goodnight and a get home safe.
He watches as you practically break out into a full sprint as soon as you leave the HYBE building. Not caring how crazy you look in the moment, and boy, to some of the other people passing by, you look it. However none of that mattered in the moment, because, to put it lightly, you were late as shit to the meetup almost halfway across town.
To you, in the moment, it didn't matter that your feet were practically screaming at you, but just to get there as soon as possible. And the moment you do, your lungs burn but you don't care, you can focus on the spot in front of you. The spot was near the Han River, at a picnic table was two covered instant noodle bowls--still hot, probably, and two distinct flavors. The Carbo Buldak stir-fried noodles on one side, and the other was the classic Shin Ramyeon spicy flavor.
As you look around the area for the owner of the other bowl, you take a seat and smile at the other quick convenience store items on the table, like the gimbap and milk bread.
"Y'know," A voice said from behind shortly after you sit. You smile at the familiar tone, warm and soft, yet teasing, but don't turn around. "If you ask me out on a date, the least you could do is show up on time."
The owner sits across from where you sit, and smiles as he puts the napkins and two paper cups on the table. And that smile, that particular playful smile he does every time he sees you.
Choi Soobin.
He was dressed down in a dark navy blue sweatshirt, paired with black sweatpants and his hair lightly tousled, almost as if he had been on the move as well. But the way the strands of hair fell onto his face began to make your heart melt.
There weren't many words that could describe the love you have for him. He's almost always been there in your life, however now as each other's partner? It was hard, your relationship wasn't public, what with him being the leader of an idol group, and you--not even sure if you'd make the next lineup. Sneaking around was hard, but moments like these, where the two of you could just be Soobin and Y/N, it made you more content with anything.
"I'm sorry," You admit, placing your bag down besides you. He lets out a small laugh as he opens his can of coffee. "I got a bit carried away with practice. Yucheong was the one who pulled me out."
"It's okay," Soobin reassures, "I haven't been out here long anyways. The convenience store I was at didn't have the noodles I wanted, plus there was a line to use the microwave and hot water."
You let out a laugh as you open your own can of coffee, pouring it into the paper cup. Soobin takes his chopsticks and opens the cover to his bowl, and you do the same shortly after. And you both begin to eat, sitting in a moment of silence before joking with each other as you usually do.
"So," He begins, taking a piece of the gimbap. "The final lineup announcement is in two weeks?"
You nod your head as you take a bite out of your ramen.
"Yeah, I've been trying to get every bit of the choreo right, but it's almost like something is holding me back."
Soobin looked up from his meal and his gaze shifted into one of confusion. "How do you mean?"
You sigh, placing the chopsticks fulls of ramen back into the bowl, and you look up to him. Seeing all the worry and confusion in his eyes as he does the same with his chopsticks.
"Do you think I'm good enough?" You find yourself asking, looking down at the bowl of ramen in front of you. Soobin looks at you, taken aback at the question.
"What? Of course you're good enough, jagi!" He exclaims. "You're one of the most hardworking trainees I've seen by far!"
You sigh quietly and finally look up at your boyfriend.
"Do you think I'm good enough for you?" You ask. Before he can answer, you continue the question. "Do you think I'm good enough as a trainee to debut as an idol, and as your girlfriend in public?"
He doesn't answer you-- not right away at least.
"I think you shouldn't worry about not making the cut, Y/N." Soobin tells you, his voice quiet and calm. Steady, and he doesn't break eye contact with you as tells you this. "You are insanely talented, and when I mean that you are the most hard working idol in training, I really mean it. I haven't seen anyone else bust their ass off as much as you do when it comes to learning choreography or even learning how to better your vocal skills."
You raise an eyebrow at the last statement. "You think I'm a bad singer?"
Soobin's eyes widen as he tries to backtrack.
"No-no, that's not--that's not what I meant, jagiya--"
You cut him off by a laugh as the words fall short.
"It's okay, Soobin," You tell him. "I know singing isn't my strongest suite, but I am working to be better."
"You made it to the final 10 trainees, jagi," He looks at you, a soft smile forming on his lips. "You have nothing to worry about. You'll be great."
Soobin looks down into his lap for a moment then back into your eyes, his eyes; dark and doe-like, bore into your e/c and e/s ones as the words you'd secretly been wanting to hear for a while now fall from his lips.
"And I can't wait to share the stage with you as my girlfriend."
I love you, wish me luck!
That was the last text you'd sent Soobin, and you'd checked if he'd respond almost like clockwork every five minutes. But to your surprise, it was left on read.
He's just working. You told yourself. He's busy, remember?
It began to eat away at you, the fear and anxiety.
The fact that the dread had not settled away since your date with Soobin, two weeks ago and the last time you'd seen him in person and the dread had been eating you away, now you and nine other trainees sat in the practice room of HYBE on the floor. You sat next to Yucheong, tucked away in the corner by the mirrors, and the rest of the trainees scattered throughout the rest of the space. All of their names alongside your own, waiting for the agency to call them and determine if you would get to debut on the stage.
If you'd get to debut and be with Soobin.
Kang Juyeon
Koh Aera
Yang Yucheong
Lim Miyeong
Kim Yeongsu
Kim Namgyu
Ahn Baekho
Oh Suyeong
Seo Inja
L/N Y/N
All of them you knew, some of them became very good friends, like Yucheong and Aera, and some of the other were indifferent towards you, but you couldn't really blame them for that. To be honest, you didn't exactly go out of your way to befriend them. Yucheong held onto your right hand as your left fingers began to drum on the hardwood floor of the practice floor.
When the people in charge, clad in their navy and black suits, every one of them looking pristine and perfect and not a thing out of place, walked into the practice room. That was when the hair on the back of your neck began to rise and as you stood alongside the rest of the trainees and bowed, the dread began to creep in again.
"Hello, everybody," One man in the group spoke. He looked over every trainee as he continued. "As I'm sure you are all aware; today is the day we announce the release of our next two groups."
You look over to Yucheong briefly, as the words linger in the air. The the woman standing to the man's left spoke up, she had been wearing a pastel button down paired with navy slacks.
"The first group will be a boy-group; Limitless. They will debut in six months, and our second group; With Love, a girl-group will debut in one year from today. Those who do not make the final cut will be further evaluated by the agency and given their results from the previous evaluation in private."
It almost felt like it was directed at you, especially since the woman's gaze was lingered on you for a moment too long.
"Now," The man spoke up, "Let us begin."
Yucheong grabbed hold of your right hand again, and Aera, who moved to stand next to you, held onto your other hand as the two people pulled a piece of paper out from their folders. The pieces of paper that contained the contents of all of your futures.
"The members of Limitless are; Kang Juyeon, your leader,"
Juyeon smiled lightly to himself as he was beckoned to come stand in front of the other trainees. He had been working as a rapper and as a dancer everyday since he started.
"Kim Namgyu,"
Namgyu let out a small and surprised laugh as he went to stand beside Juyeon, who smiled and clapped him on the back. Namgyu had been working on his singing and trying to improve on his dancing, it wasn't that he was bad, but dancing often came second in his mind.
"Yang Yucheong,"
Yucheong looked up in surprise as you and Aera smiled in excitement for your friend. He looked at you and gave you a hug before going to stand with his new band mates.
"Now the final member to join Limitless is,"
It had come down the other two male trainees, Kim Yeongsu and Ahn Baekho, both worked tirelessly when it came to dancing, but Baekho often got too over-competitive. Not in a particularly friendly way either.
Yeongsu often compared himself too much to some of the other dancers, including yourself, and you would often hear him try and guilt you for working as hard as you have. Safe to say, he had not been someone you were close to.
"Ahn Baekho."
Baekho stood next to Aera and smirked to himself as he walked to stand next to Yucheong.
"PLEDIS Entertainment has agreed to oversee the management of Limitless, they will take over the continuous trainings from here on out. Congratulations, young men."
Everyone else cheered for the four young men standing in front of you, even Yeongsu, who no doubt would say something once you all had a moment alone. But now they were moving onto the portion that had kept you up almost all night.
"Now the lineup for With Love," The woman had begun, looking down onto her paper. "The first member to join is; your leader, Oh Suyeong,"
Suyeong smiled as she walked up to stand by the woman, she started roughly around when you had. To be honest, Suyeong had always shown that she was meant to be an idol, something about her just had the "it factor" that many described about numerous idols.
"Koh Aera,"
You broke out into a smile as she held back tears, and you gave her a hug. Watching as she walked up and was hugged by Suyeong. Ever since Aera began training, she had been working on every piece of becoming an idol. From the dancing to the vocal lessons and even trying to perfect the PR training portion. She'll be great.
"And the final member to join With Love is,"
The final member, only three girls in this group and came down to you or the other two female trainees left.
Seo Inja or Lim Miyeong, both also worked very hard in dance, but they also shone in the vocal areas and even when it came to rapping. Inja had been in school with you, and she often was scolded for daydreaming too often, however she also had an incredible talent for musical instruments.
Miyeong was often found writing in an old composition notebook, which she confessed to you and Aera that it was song lyrics she was trying to piece together. She once told you that if becoming an idol doesn't work out for her, then she wouldn't mind becoming a songwriter or producer.
And you, L/N Y/N, a girl from Incheon, who had been working her ass off for the past two years to perfect everything in order to debut. Of all the trainees in every evaluation, you ranked the top in the dancing portion, especially in dance, something you were applauded for by many of the other trainees, and even Soobin, or often ridiculed for, like Baekho or Yeongsu. You could admit, there are times where you knew you should also put the same amount of effort into the other portions of being an idol, like vocals and the PR training, but anyone who knew you, truly knew you, knew that dancing was where your heart really belonged.
"Lim Miyeong."
Your heart sank, stomach churning as the cheers for Miyeong became nothing more than background noise. You didn't even see the look on Yucheong or Aera's faces as Miyeong walked over to stand next to her new band mates.
"SOURCE Music has agreed to oversee the management of With Love, they will take over the continuous training from here on out. Congratulations, young ladies"
Everyone cheered as the new members of these two groups bowed deeply, but you couldn't stop staring at the floor. All of that work, all the time you spent getting everything just right, only for it all to be for nothing?
"Kim Yeongsu, L/N Y/N, and Seo Inja, we will discuss your performance reviews from the last evaluation. Y/N-ssi, if you could follow us, please."
You look over to Aera and Yucheong, before taking in a deep sigh and following the man and woman who announced the groups. They held the door open for you stepped out into the hall, following them to another room just on floor above the one you were on now.
They sat at a table and beckoned you to sit across from them, and as you took in their facial expressions, especially the woman's, you had a feeling that your results from the last evaluation were not up to their standards.
"Y/N-ssi," The man began, folding his hands out in front of him shortly after pulling the piece of paper from his folder. "Your results from the previous evaluations were quite good. High marks on all of the pieces, especially dance, however there was something else that had prevented you from being chosen in this lineup."
Something else?
You thought back, and as the pieces of the puzzle started to connect in your mind, your heart sank.
Oh no.
"It has come to our attention that you were seen to be in a relationship with Choi Soobin of Tomorrow X Together, something that widely discouraged for the artists of HYBE Entertainment, especially our rookies and trainees." The woman spoke up this time, her gaze staring deep into you.
"But it's not in our contracts," You snip. Everybody knew that HYBE strongly discouraged their artists to date, especially the trainees and rookies, but there was nothing legal or written in anyone's contract about it. "If it is not in our contracts, in legal print, then theoretically we shouldn't be punished for this."
The man and woman shared a look with each other, before she turned to you with a raised eyebrow.
"'We?'" The man said this time, you look over to him as he continues. "BigHit has agreed to reprimand Soobin for this, from our understanding, he is on a strict working schedule. Meaning he only has the privilege of going to and from any event relating to the group and that all of his free time is spent back at their dorms with security waiting to escort him back should he try to leave."
House arrest? That's all they gave him?
"For how long?" You questioned.
"Until their next comeback."
Their next comeback was in two months, he was only being punished for a few weeks?
Then you found yourself asking, "Are his phone privileges revoked at least?"
"No."
You let out a quiet laugh in disbelief as you shook your head.
"BighHit has also agreed to let this issue go on the conditions that you are to be placed on a probation." Probation? Are you fucking kidding me? "This means that the next lineup, you will not be on the chosen list of debuting, unless you have shown a strict discipline for the job of being an idol, then your chances of debuting next lineup will be significantly higher."
"But that's not a guaranteed position?" You snapped, voice bitter and filled with resentment.
"Watch your tone, young lady." The woman bit out. "You should be thankful that they have not taken it a step further and requested that you be removed from HYBE. It is not our fault you were stupid enough to do this."
The man looked over to the woman with a look that said, "You're taking it too far."
"That is all, Y/N-ssi. We will escort you back now."
All of it seemed so unreal. You were really the only one being punished with your entire career and everything you'd been working for, and all he got was a slap on the wrist?
When you entered the practice room, every pair of eyes fell to you as you walked over to where your stuff was, and you began to pack it all up.
"Inja-ssi, if you could follow us, please?"
Inja looked over to you with a defeated expression, then walked over to the group and followed them out of the practice room. Yeongsu looked over to where you stood and walked over to you, placing his hand on your shoulder.
"Noona, are you okay?" He asked quietly. You don't even look at him as you shrug lightly. "I'm sure you'll make the next lineup, noona."
Why work that fucking hard if it came to nothing?
You didn't even register that Aera had come over and rubbed your back, trying to comfort you. And then you heard that snicker. That fucking snicker, and the owner of it wasn't trying to make it subtle.
You look up, seeing Baekho smirking at you, he was rubbing his success in your face.
"The fuck is your problem?" You found yourself snapping, much to Yucheong and Aera's surprise, especially since they've never really heard you swear before.
Baekho held his hands up in mock surrender. "Nothing, but I gotta say that it is kind of funny to see someone who slept with one of their top idols fall on her ass. I guess whoring yourself to the top doesn't guarantee that you're good enough to be an idol."
Yucheong and Aera stood up straight, ready to defend you.
"What the hell, Baekho?!"
"You don't know what you're talking about!"
The sounds of disagreement and disgust came from all over the room at his words, especially from Aera and Juyeon, then Yucheong took a step closer.
"You need to back off, Baekho."
"Well, I'm just saying truth," He shrugged, watching as you finished throwing all of your things into your bag and started walking towards the door. "Not all of us are that talentless and terrible at this job we need to resort to that. Stupid slut."
That last part was said quietly, so nobody really heard it, except for yourself when you walked past him and Yucheong. The next few minutes were a bit of a blur to yourself, but to everyone else they watched as you stopped walking. You dropped you bag at your feet and turned around, not sparing anyone a spare glance or a second thought.
You took everyone by surprise, including Baekho himself, when your fist collided with the side of his face. The room erupted into chaos as he fell onto his back with a THUD!, and you continued to slap and hit him.
Your vision was blurry and stinging with tears, falling and unshed, but you continued to hit him, feeling someone try and pull you off of Baekho. But you kept pulling yourself from their grasp until another person joined in and pulled you off completely.
It had been Juyeon and Yucheong who pulled you off of Baekho, with Namgyu and Suyeong holding Baekho back from retaliation. His bottom lip was swollen and bleeding a bit, his right eye started bruising and his nose was bleeding. But he didn't care, he was still fighting Namgyu and Suyeong's hold on him.
"You dumb bitch! You think this is gonna make you debut now?!" Baekho shouted, still fighting Namgyu and Suyeong.
"THAT'S ENOUGH, BAEKHO!" Juyeon shouted, making Miyeong and Aera jump. "Let's take him to the clinic to get checked out."
"You better watch your fucking back!"
Those had been the last words you heard from Baekho while the other three dragged him out of the dance practice room. Now the rest of you stood in silence, nobody wanting to say a word.
"Noona," Yucheong finally spoke up, but you didn't look him in the eyes. "What did he mean?"
Aera and Miyeong stepped closer, but not too close, they still kept their distance. But you didn't say anything, you just couldn't as the tears were falling freely now.
All you could do was shake your head repeatedly.
"Just leave me alone." You whispered.
"Noona, we're here for you--" Yucheong started, but you cut him off.
"JUST LEAVE ME ALONE, OKAY!?" You shouted, which surprised everyone left in the room, especially since it was at Yucheong. His heart broke, even though he knew you didn't mean it. You were just hurting from everything that piled on top of you within the hour. But he nodded his head, took a step back for you to grab your things, and watched with a broken heart as you practically ran out of the practice room.
He and Aera gave you the space you needed, and wanted.
Hours passed, and you still hadn't really left the HYBE building. But you avoided everyone and went back to the practice room, which had been emptied after this afternoon's scuffle.
Your bag fell to your feet once again as you took in the sight all around you. Remembering how every night you stayed late to get every step of whatever choreography they'd given you just right. Perfect.
The ache in your chest built up, and your throat formed a lump that became hard to ignore. Tears, threatening to spill, stung your eyes as the reality came crashing down; your career here at HYBE was over.
When you looked down to see the first tear fall onto the floor, the sobs echoed in the emptied room. You fell to your knees and held your face in your hands as your whole body shook with every cry that fell from your lips. You didn't even hear the door open.
The footsteps of a group pulled you from your cries as you looked up and turned around, only to find Soobin and rest of his group standing at the door with their things in hand. His face fell when he made eye contact with you.
Yeonjun, noticing the tension as soon as Soobin met your gaze, motioned for his fellow members to give you space for a moment. What's a few minutes off of their dance practice?
"Y/N--"
"Did you know?"
Soobin took a step forward, putting his bag down while doing so. But you took a step backwards, away from him. He gave a nod, it was short and curt.
"How long?"
"Y/N--I--"
"How. Long?" You bit out.
"They approached me the day after our last date." He explained, his voice becoming steady and clipped. "Someone saw us, which I warned you that it would happen eventually."
Your gaze hardened as he tried to blame you. "Don't put this one me, Soobin."
"Well I'm not the one who wanted to go out on a date that night!"
"I"M NOT THE ONE WHO PICKED A PUBLIC SPACE, SOOBIN!"
He scoffed at your raised voice and bit his lip in annoyance, rolling his eyes as well.
"They put me on probation, did you know that?" You quizzed. Soobin looked down at his feet before answering you.
"Yes," He admitted. "They told me that day."
"And you didn't fucking tell me. You've been able to text me for two weeks, and you never thought to mention it?"
"I guess it just slipped my mind." The way he said it was casually, it furthered your anger more. "I also just heard that you beat the shit out of another trainee."
The tears started forming again, but this time they came from anger.
"Do you even know why? Do you know what he said?"
"No," Soobin confessed, shrugging as he stuffed his hands into his pockets. "But I can't be seen with someone that goes beating the shit out of others because their feelings got hurt or that they weren't chosen for something. I won't."
Where the fuck was this coming from?
"What the hell does that mean?" Your voice quieted as the question fell from your lips.
"We're done, Y/N." Soobin says. Your heart breaks even more. "I'm not going to jeopardize my group for this. Let's be realistic here, we can't have this and our jobs. Or lack thereof."
You begin to cry more freely as you pick up your bag, and move to leave this fucking building. And even this company at that.
As you walk past Soobin, you look up into his eyes, the ones that often held so much love and adoration--now cold and empty towards you. You say one last thing to him, the man who had been your first love, before walking out the door, not bothering to turn around or come back.

Yucheong looked over to where you stood and walked over to you, placing his hand on your shoulder.

Epilogue
This is probably gonna sound kinda silly to ask...but would anyone like to be a beta reader for me? I have a fic idea trying to combine the SKZ and ATZ lore, though it predominantly follows the ATEEZ lore. It'll have all sorts of idols and other groups as well.
Okay so i just finished watching Kpop Demon Hunters, which btw I've been very excited about since it's first trailer dropped.
But the movie felt quite underwhelming to me.
Not that it is entirely bad but some scenes felt very hollow..like there could've been more (i heard they removed an Idol Star Athletics scene between Huntrix and Saja Boys 😭)
The fact that all the members of the Saja Boys don't even have proper names annoyed me a bit! Okay, i get that Jinu had a bigger role compared to the other 4 but i really wish we'd gotten some official names, atleast for the sake of all fan content that i (and many other viewers) wanna create.
Secondly, they also gave very little to Mira and Zoey. I wish they had their own mini arcs and issues going on.
(thought this movie would focus more on the girl trio like Totally Spies or Powerpuff Girls, with Saja Boys having lesser but still significant screentime)
Another thing, which probably might not be a big deal to many, is the fact that Saja Boys were never redeemed. The small flame between Rumi and Jinu could barely spark for a faint moment before it got entirely extinguished 😭 My Rujinu heart can't take it! I wanted more of them. (Poor blue tiger and the 3-eyed crow, their children of divorce 😭)
The movie felt very predictable at some points but it's okay because overall it was well-executed, and the original soundtracks are amazing and very catchy.
Anyways we deserved more Saja Boys screentime!!!
(cuz the boys did have a good dynamic. They acted so goofy n boyish together like actual Bouygroups but the fact that none of them had any clue on Jinu's late night disappearances makes the characters feel hollow and under-developed.)
I WANTED MORE OF HUNTRIX X SAJA BOYS SHENANIGANS AT THE AWARDS, INTERVIEWS, FAN MEETS, VARIETY SHOWS, ETC..
just a mini rant..i still enjoyed the movie and might write some RuJinu fics soon ✌️
