DRMM Reflection

In the DRMM seminar held, I learned about basic concepts one must learn in assessing these kind of research. This will help to concretely plan a guideline wherein we can avoid or know how to handle the disaster that may come in the future. That is also why addressing disaster issues are very important in terms of it being the basic matter in planning a risk management. Aside from this, first aid is very important mostly in unexpected happenings and accidents that may occur. Some of these are the CPR, the proper bandaging and proper lifting of an injured person.You’ll never know when your help for saving lives is needed the most so better be prepared and know how to deal with it.

We had a PCVA exercise where we can first learn how to address disaster issues. We first start of with our own barangays. We started by determining the hazards, capacities, vulnerabilities and actions that we will attest to. While evaluating the whole work of the group, we all had a common denominator wherein flood is the usual hazard we all experience. This is caused by low area and drainage problems. It also states the apathy of people is also one of the issues here. The involvement of the community and for their voices to be heard is very essential when it comes to barangays’ development. So we shouldn’t always put the blame on the barangay/government but ask ourselves if we had done something that will actually contribute to a change.

To better understand these things, I visited our barangay officials. It was actually the perfect timing because they were busy installing cctvs around the area. They told me that through the development of technology we must maximize its use and take part into it. The installation of cctvs may be use to monitor the happenings within our community. Also, this may be use to address our problems and resolve it. As to unexpected disasters that may occur, we already have installed megaphones that will be heard by the whole community in terms of possible evacuation. We also elevated some areas and newly asphalted road. Future plans lies to increasing awareness to the people and providing them proper knowledge about this matter. Considering that a lot of disaster had pass through within our country, better let our society know what to do in case this will occur in our area.

As a Filipino and member of the society, I would want people to be more aware of DRMM. This isn’t just some plan that some may ignore but this is actually the plan that will save thousands of lives. Hopefully, we can obliterate apathy in the minds of people. Today is the perfect time to finally take action. We cannot just rely on the government or other people but instead be independent and intelligent in this matter. Cause no matter how good the plans of the higher officials may have, it will be useless if we will not actually participate into it. In order to prevent the nightmares cause by the past catastrophes, we must able to improve ourselves first.

Be a proactive and educate to make a better change. To start this, I posted some posters within our barangay for them to be aware of the Disaster Risk Reduction Management and address our issues within the community.

Fieldwork Reflection

September 6, 2014. A day where I embrace the values of being appreciative, emphatic and proactive.

A small school in the town of Nueva Ecija lives the happiest people I have met.

We were assigned to conduct different activities with the chosen students of one classroom. We colored some paper patterned with different cartoon characters which they enjoyed a lot. I also asked them about their familiarity of the colors, name of the cartoon characters and what they love about it. It was fun to see how responsive they are through this. Some of the books we have brought excites most of them and this shows how hungry these children are with learning/reading new materials. But soon after, they got bored as well and suggest the game they enjoy the most which is called "mataya-taya." We played and run with them in the fullest state of our joyous hearts. It was finally time to eat when the game has ended. Other NSTP students prepared a delicious spaghetti meal with a healthy addition of malunggay. Seeing the enthusiastic look on the faces of these children thrilled me as well. I was glad to serve them these foods. The fact that most of them came back for another serving shows how they savor the food.

The current state of their school opened my eyes of how schools in rural areas lack sufficient facilities and school materials. This problem has been the issue that the government has been trying to solve for years. Sadly, the development is slow considering that this needs an immediate action. We all do know that largest part of our public fund is allocated in education because we believe that knowledge is the key to success. Hopefully, a more concrete foundation will be provided for the students because it will result to kind of future they will acquire. A faster movement of the government and awareness to the public to take action as well.

As a family member, I learned to be appreciative. Appreciative in terms of being thankful for whatever blessings I may receive and be able to share it to those who are in need. To stop complaining about the things that I can not have rather count your blessings and think again.

As a Thomasian, I was able to empathized the situation of the children. Trying to be in another person's shoes and viewing the world they see. Makes me strive harder to better improve myself and hopefully I can help these people in the near future.

As a Filipino citizen, I realized the kind of hardships these people are going through. So we should not just sit down and let the officials do they work. Instead, be proactive and fight for a change. Change that will soon take everything into place and be a cause to the success of each and everyone.

Life is filled with excitement of challenges that may bring us up or down. Expect lot of sacrifices and hardships we may approach. But at the end of the day, together as one, we can make a change that will transform everyone's lives for greater good.
