WMSU-SHS STORIES: Why do we need to study Media and Information Literacy

You might be reading this right now in the convenience of your gadgets' screens, and if you are like me, a senior high school student, your interest must be high to know the reasons behind the question above: why do we need to study Media and Information Literacy (MIL)?

As part of the K-12 Curriculum, MIL is being taught in SHS and here in WMSU, it's in the first semester. We are very lucky to have been educated by our highly competent instructor, in which I have learned a lot from. But still curious if why do we need to study this even if we are about to take courses unrelated to this subject? Then here's a list of the reasons I think are things to consider in relation to learning MIL:

GRASP INFORMATION CRITICALLY - the general key of this subject is evaluating messages in different media and platforms, especially in this technologically - driven world, and of course intelligently relaying them. This course could offer more than that. After learning this subject, you can expect yourself to be better in communicating, and critically examine information that are posted online or in physical copies.

VALUE OTHER'S VIEWPOINT - MIL helps students to understand what other people might also say or their perspectives on a given issue or situation. This builds the attitude of every learner in appreciating one's work. Most importantly, this increases students' confidence in speaking for their own opinions and knowledge about something.

MAKING LEARNERS SMARTER AS CONSUMERS OF SERVICES AND INFORMATION - marketing and advertising products can help a company profit from consumers, but what MIL can contribute for young student consumers is for them to be wise in buying rather than being impulsive. This is a great help for the students will learn the persuasive intent of the advertisements, and determine as well its credibility. Furthermore, the students will also gain insights about how the whole media marketing and related topics work together.

BECOME A RESPONSIBLE MEDIA USER - MIL teaches the proper way and the ethics of media usage. By doing so, students become more discipline in creating media, sharing and retrieving information, classifying hoax from the truth, and giving out personal information for better and effective communication.

GETTING AWARE OF THE ROLE OF MEDIA AND UNDERSTANDING IT - different information from dissimilar sources tell us something. Posts online, issues from every magazine, newspapers, televisions, and almost everywhere share knowledge to us which slowly mold us to act at certain ways. Meanwhile, understanding the purpose of the information we just got through the help of MIL can influence how we think. This purely helps us make creative and smart decisions.

OVERALL, Media and Information Literacy is not something you can ignore. This is more than just a subject, for it teaches fundamental information we all must know, especially at our young age. Learning this subject inside our class has been very interesting and fun for me, and by the end of this semester, I am proud and confident that I've gained knowledge more than I deserve.

HOW TO GET INTO UNIVERSITY: SIX STEPS TO SUCCESS

Writing a strong personal statement is the key to getting into a top Russell Group (or equivalent) university. Especially for courses without an interview, it is the way for the University to get to know you and why they should choose you to study there. For me, applying to university in 2014 seems like a lifetime ago, and I feel like I have a lot of top tips to share with you all!

1. Talk about why you want to study the course

It might seem obvious but students frequently make the mistake of talking about why they want to be a lawyer, doctor, engineer, etc. but forget to talk about motivations for actually studying the course. Of course, it’s important to talk about your future aspirations, but they shouldn’t be the focus of your statement. How do your current academics relate to what you want to study? If they don’t, what have you read/attended outside of school that makes you interested in it?

2. Remember that the application goes to all of your courses

Yes, you might be incredibly inspired by the professor at UCL, but remember that the Bristol admissions team are reading it too. Save the more personal compliments for open days and interviews.

3. Don’t worry if you don’t have relevant work experience

Don’t panic if you think that your Saturday job in retail doesn’t relate to your desire to study classics. Anything you do outside of school contains transferrable skills that can apply to your studying - time-management, organisation, communication, etc.

4. If you run out of space, ask your teacher

If you find that you have more accomplishments and interests than you have space for, don’t be afraid to ask the teacher who is writing your reference to include them in what they write about you.

5. Avoid quoting others

There’s only so many times admissions teams can read an Aristotle quote without wanting to weep. Instead of wasting your word count on what others have to say, use it to talk about a Ted Talk you’ve watched or an academic paper in that field that you’ve read.

6. Think about your format

Stick to the character/word count (I believe UCAS is 4000 characters or 47 lines). Use full sentences and paragraphs. Spell check. Read it aloud. Show it to others. Have them read it out to you.

Start with your initial interest in the field, your academic studies, then work experience, and finally your interests and hobbies.

Lines to avoid:

“I’ve always wanted to study…” “For as long as I can remember, I…” “I am passionate about x because…”

My biggest inspiration of course is my family, but there is one guy that motivates me even more to work harder as a student and an athlete. He’s name is Connor Mcgregor also known as ‘The Notorious"

McGregor for those who don’t know him is a martial artist and fights in the UFC octagon (Although he had already fought inside the boxing ring against the number one Floyd Mayweather Jr.). He became an inspiration to many especially to me because of his remarkable success story. McGregor and his family lived a frugal life in Dublin, Ireland. During his youth McGregor was uninterested in school and went plumbing to earn money to cover his expenses for his training at the boxing gym of now his longtime coach John Kavanagh. McGregor was not born a fighter, none in his family was this is why later on life they refused when Mcgregor chose to become a fighter, but still Mcgregor pushed for what he wants and even told his father “You’ll be sorry when I’m a millionare”. Mcgregor spent most of his time during that time training, his coach saw the potential in him as he defeated two of the best boxers at that gym in a sparring session. When he was about to join the UFC he said confidently in an interview that “Without a doubt, people will see him in the top of the UFC” and yes, he became the face of the UFC, after defeating every single champions of the best sort in early rounds by these he grew very famous and of course wealthy. McGregor is a cocky guy, saying things before they are done, but his words are backed by his actions, he take actions more than what he speaks. Uninterested in school is now a multi millionare 4th in the Forbes list of the highest paid athletes. This story of success reminds us that there are different ways to be successful but only one way to succeed and that is when you put the hard work, if you will work for what you want without a doubt you will be successful in achieving it.

A journey in someone's life is a road to be taken alone in an endless night drive. But just like it, there will be street lights, the moonlight, road signs and traffic lights that will make the travel much easier.

I call myself as Marghani, and as a 17-year old student, it's no joke that I'm almost near to becoming an adult and life by that time will probably be harder. Moreover, I still manage to get up my bed and start my day with the help of some of the important people in my life.

THERE'S no denying that Taylor Swift is one of the most influential female artists of the 21st Century. Just a fun fact about me: I became a swiftie when I was in 5th grade and up to this date I still love her. Her songs, dating from her old country albums to her pop music are all great and a masterpiece, and they mean the world to me. As a teenager, I can really relate to the stories she tells in her songs and I feel so motivated when I listen to them. Just like everyone else, I encounter problems and challenges but listening to Taylor Swift makes them go away for a while. I definitely suggest her songs when you need a lift up.

THIS photo reminds me of the 2017's Mother's day, and as clear as a picture I can still remember every detail of that special day.

My mom is a simple woman, and together with my dad they provide for our needs at all cost, even if it means sacrificing. My mother serves as our guide in everything, because my dad works a bit far from home and I grew up mostly in the hands of my mom. My mother is my first teacher and she taught us a lot of things. Her stories keep us inspired and she herself keeps me inspired. I could say that I'm more than bless to have her as my mother and I am forever thankful to be a part of our family. This may sound cliche but I would definitely shout about how my mother is the best mom in the world, and the last thing I want to see before my day ends is her face and smile. (i srsly hate my look on that pic)

THE Filipino family is commonly an extended family and even if a member has to separate and make their own home, still they cannot refuse to leave their existing love ones. In our case, we live with my grandparents, even if both of them do not agree to share a bedroom (reminds me of young love LOL).

My Lola particularly, is the one who is giving me advices about life and how to survive it the way they did. Just like every typical Lola, she talks about her history and sometimes stories that were once told during their times. At her age, i wonder of the problems she might have faced before ending up having us. Her wrinkles might give signs of her battles, but for me they are a reminder of the youth she once had. Whenever I see her, I tell myself to become stronger and to keep on holding. She is basically one of the reasons I stay positive in life. If I would decide I want her to spend the rest of her life happily and the way wants it.

ANYWAYS, I would say this guy helped me a lot especially in knowing myself. I met him last school year and until now we are still together (as friends just to clarify). We are really close friends and I value our time together. I might consider him as my boy best friend and I just like how positive his vibe is. What I want about him is his attitude and personality that make him look more attractive. He's not perfect but I already see his flaws as beautiful parts of him. I always cherish the moments we share together; whether when we're in the mall shopping for my skin care products, watching horror movies in cinema booths, listening on each other's playlists or studying at the municipal library. He inspires and motivates me and he never became a distraction. I love how he is what he is and how he sees me differently from others. I feel so loved and secured having him 💗

TO SUM THINGS UP, I certainly know the people in my life who play a significant role in keeping me this way. Apart from them I can still name a few, but due to some circumstances I only sketched these people (but they are of the same value). At the end of the road, after a long night's drive and with the help of street lights, the moonlight, road signs and traffic lights, you will find yourself embraced in an another long day journey in your life.

Just keep breathing.

WMSU-SHS STORIES: Reasons why we celebrate Buwan ng Wika

Every August we Filipinos celebrate a month long celebration for our national language. This celebration is termed in Filipino “Buwan ng Wika”. But what is langguage for us? Language is the spirit of a nation, it gives identity to its people, just like how our filipino language makes us Filipino Filipinos. But why do we celebrate it? Especially inside a school setting? Well there are a couple of reasons why.

To acknowledge our culture - Just like what I said national language gives people their identity. In celebrating our language we also celebrate our culture as Filipinos. Langguage and culture are closely related, langgauge is said to be the verbal expression of culture and it is use to maintain a culture. So celebrating Buwan ng Wika also means acknowledging our cultural background and conserving it.

To commemorate former President Manuel L quezon - Manuel Luis Quezon is the second President of the Philippines and the first President of the commonwealth. Manuel L. Quezon is the one who pushed the declaration of Filipino to be our national language while he was president. He believes that one language for all is very essential in the unity of the Filipino people, this is the reason why he was given the title Ama ng Wikang Pambansa.

And lastly…

To further embrace our langguage- You can tell the people of the world that you’re proud being a Filipino if you’ll speak with them using our national language (of course you will sound alien). There a many ways to embrace our language even just by using it in our daily lives, by this we are enriching it and eventually it would develope into a wider and complex language that as Filipinos we should be proud of.

WMSU-SHS STORIES: Why do we celebrate Buwan ng Wika?

There'a no denying that the country of Philippines is packed with diverse cultures from different people, adding time that gave birth to the mix race of Filipino and provided us a variety of beliefs and of course, language. It is one of the identities of a place, a means of communication, a tool that binds us all together, and a reason for our peaceful understanding, and we call it here as Filipino; our national language (Pambansang Wika). But what is so special about this? Why do we have to celebrate "things" like this and is it necessary for every Filipino to participate?

Just like in every country, the Philippines' official language began with nothing. Considering that we are an archipelago and islands away from our neighboring town, our government decided to create one language that all agreed to speak. Thanks to our former President, Mr. Manuel L. Quezon we have came up with what we are today (we could all agree that our language is one of the factors that shape us to become the modern Filipino)

In recent years, our standard for language changed dramatically. A lot of Filipinos tend to see their "kababayan" to be smart and intellectual when they know how to speak in English fluently. They based someone's intelligence in being multilingual (that's actually a type of intelligence, linguistic), and that brought an effect to the younger Filipino's mind and as they grow, our fake standard becomes stronger. Furthermore, the sense of being Filipino in terms of speaking our own language gets lesser in value, and by that some of the words are being forgotten.

You probably recognize this woman from a page called Many People from Many Countries, which basically puts up 70 people of different nationalities to answer what's asked the way how their country would also answer. The chosen representative of the Philippines got bashed by Filipino netizens because of her lack in knowledge about our language, and that's where the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) got the idea of this year's theme in celebration of Buwan ng Wika: FILIPINO, WIKA NG SALIKSIK. The KWF believes that by educating the "new" Filipinos of our undying and powerful language, we can conserve our history and preserve our identity. They incorporate the use of researching as one of the tools to properly know and understand our language, for not all Filipinos, especially those who aren't pure, can speak in Filipino fluently.

The Western Mindanao State University held activities last week with regard to the Buwan ng Wika, and the said event was successful. Each year we commemorate the foundation of our official language that is derived from the tagalog dialect, and in schools we are being presented activities that will surely bring life to our dormant Filipino blood. Buwan ng Wika every month of August is very important for it promotes the Filipino language that gives quality communication among us. It reminds every citizen that we are what we are, and that is because of our common language. Its also relevant and everyone will agree to this, for even just participating in the said event will show how much we are thankful of our language and how we value its significance. After all, not everyone can comprehend every region's dialect, so a common language is a must.

We have come too far and the results are truly astonishing. By paying off, even once a year a recognition would be appreciated.
