Review: Fresh Rose Face Mask

I picked up the Fresh Rose Face Mask and the Fresh Soy Cleanser as my Sephora birthday gift. I’ve heard a lot about this mask, both positive and negative, so I wanted to try it for myself. I have dry skin, so I’m all about a hydrating face mask. Let’s get right into the review.

From Sephora’s website, this mask claims to moisturize and tone the skin, and is good for all skin types. Looking through the ingredients, I notice it has glycerine in it, which is moisturizing, as well as its star ingredient: the rose. This comes in the form of small rose petals in the actual mask, as well as rose flower water and oil. The mask has a very rosy scent, so if you don’t like the smell of rose, you won’t like this. The smell stays on your face for most of the duration of the mask (5-10 minutes). A full 3.4 oz size of this product costs $62.00, so it is on the pricier side.

When you put the mask on your face, it’s pleasantly cooling and smells strongly like roses. The texture is gel-like and has small pieces of rose in the mask itself. It’s a light brown-ish color in the tub but goes on mostly clear when it’s on your face. The directions say to keep it on for 5-10 minutes and then wash it off.

After I used it, my skin did feel moisturized. I have not noticed any change in my skin’s overall appearance (lightening hyperpigmentation, etc). Overall, I do think it is a nice mask, but I do not think it is worth the price. There are a lot of great moisturizing products out there that are not as expensive and work just as well. But if you want to splurge on it, it’s absolutely a nice luxury product. I personally would recommend the Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight mask, any hydrating sheet mask (I like Karuna masks), and the Peter Thomas Roth Blue Marine Algae Intense Hydrating mask.

Review: Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay

I just washed this off my face and literally ran to my laptop to tell the world how good it is. I’m in love, and I want the entire world to know!!!! I’m sure you’ve all heard of the cult favorite DIY clay mask: the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay. It comes in a powder that you have to mix with either apple cider vinegar or water (keep reading to find out why you should only use vinegar). The back of the jar reads: “FEEL YOUR FACE PULSATE.” I honestly wasn’t sure I wanted to feel my face pulsate, but I guess you only live once. Anyway, I have been using it for a while and I have to say that I love it. And I’m not the only one. If you don’t believe me, why don’t you go ask the 9,005 glowing customer reviews on Amazon?

This product has only one ingredient: calcium bentonite aka “green clay”. Calcium bentonite is used to absorb ions, fats and oils. Bentonite is a base, which means it has a pH greater than 7 (around 8 or 9 to be exact). The pH of the skin is about 5.5, which means the surface of your skin is actually slightly acidic. This is why it is important to mix your Aztec Secret clay with apple cider vinegar rather than water. The water will not lower the pH enough, and you’ll still be putting a rather basic mask on your face, which could irritate the skin. The vinegar will help to neutralize the base (bring it closer to a pH of 7, which is the pH of water). The pH scale is logarithmic, meaning a pH of 7 and 8 is actually a pretty big difference, so go buy that vinegar (buying both is still hella cheaper than one GlamGlow mask)! Try to go for organic and raw ACV, since the not raw kind is usually a little too acidic.

There’s a disclaimer on the tub of Aztec Clay that says not to use a metal mixing utensil. This is apparently because the positive, metallic ions will disrupt the negative ions in the bentonite clay. Not sure about that, since the clay is already in the form of a salt (a positive ion bonded with a negative ion), and the verdict online seems to be torn as well. I use a plastic tupperware and a wooden spoon just in case (it’s also easier to clean).

How to use:

1. Mix equal parts ACV and Aztec clay into your non-metal (or metal, whatever) bowl and mix together with your non-metal (again, whatever) utensil. It’s going to fizz up and smell bad.

2. It should look like a paste at this point. I use a cheap brush to paint it onto my face. WARNING: This mask is messy af. You’re gonna get messy. Don’t wear nice clothes.

3. Keep on your face as long as you want. I have dry skin that is not sensitive, and I keep mine on for 20 minutes. Do less time if you have sensitive skin.

4. Wash mask off with warm water. This is also hella messy.

5. Admire your new blotchy and red face. Don’t freak out. It’ll go away in a minute.

6. Now, actually admire your awesome face with pores that look smaller and skin that feels like a dream.

7. Moisturize your face because it’s probably going to be a little dry.
