“Why have you been here for a long time? You don’t seem like you should be here.” Shawn shrugged, looking at Mariah. “I bet you will be leaving soon! I think you are okay!”
“Yeah, over a year Shawn..” She nodded, shrugging, “I don’t want to be here but, lots of things have happened.” Mariah smiled at the little boy when he said that he bet that she was getting out soon. “I think you’re gonna get out soon too, I just know it.”
I know, I know, we just have to… not let it bother us. If we show them that nothing’s wrong, then they’ll believe it. Maybe if I work again tonight then I can manage to get tomorrow night off the dance…? That way we can at least have one night together, completely uninterrupted.
“And we won’t, we’ve been doing stuff like this for a while now, it won’t bother us. -- At a place like Serenity, I highly doubt we could ever have a night that’s completely uninterrupted. But, we can hope.”
Kim smiled and nodded. “Well in college there were deaths in the family so I wanted to help other people having problems. I also really wanted to people going through similar problems I was having, so that’s why I specialize in grief counseling.”
“Oh.” Mariah nodded, not expecting something so inspiring and powerful come from the other woman. “That’s amazing, ma’am... I think you’re going to be great here.”
Kim blushed. “O-Oh thank you. Nope I’m just a regular therapist I just used to participate in theater all the time.” She said shaking her head.
“Oh really? What made you become a therapist then, if you don’t mind me asking you that.”
“Yeah, I like it here lots! People are really super nice!” Shawn smiled. “Do you like it here? Can I ask why you are here?”
“Awh good, I’m glad.” She smiled brightly. “Of course people are really nice here, a lot better than you think it will be actually. Mariah then paused, thinking about it, “Do I? I mean, sometimes but sometimes I really do wish I wasn’t here because I’ve been here so long.”
Kim smiled and covered her mouth. “Oh, I’m sorry, I haven’t sung in front of anyone for a long time.” She felt embarrassed about her voice, it had been a long time since she’d been on a stage.
Mariah then shook her head, “What? No -- Please, it was amazing, ma’am. You can hold your notes so well.. It was inspiring.. Are you a music therapist?”
There’s always going to be suspicious people in here, especially with that gossip blog. Of course; there’s no one else I’d rather ask or go with. Part of me is hoping someone will, part of me is hoping they don’t… I really don’t want to go into security mode, like at all.
“Yeah, which by the way is really freakin’ annoying by the way. Well good, I’m glad that I’m the only one you wanna go with. Looks like we’ll have to hope that no one does so you don’t have to go into security mode especially since that’ll take time away from us.”
I’m not sure, actually… I think it’s one of those things like, go if you want but you’re not obligated to. I hate it, but you’re right. One day we won’t have to, but for now…. Hah, like a middle school dance; arms length apart, hands on the shoulder.
“A middle school dance is exactly what it’ll be considering the two of us can’t dance or be that close to each other without people getting suspicious. But I can’t wait, thanks for asking Jacob. Do you think someone’ll spike the punch like in a high school dance?!”
It’s only as long as they’re watching. If they weren’t or if we were any other place but Serenity, like normal people? We wouldn’t have to. I have a feeling there’s going to be a lot of tripping involved…
“Only when they’re watching. Do you know if all staff are gonna be there? I know, but we’re in Serenity and, we’ve got to do what we have to in here. Oh most definitely.. We’ll have to be like, a few feet away from each other just to dance with each other.”
I mean, they encourage friendships between staff and patients…. so in front of them? Just friends, and friends can dance with each other. We only have to pretend in front of them. Good, we can both suffer the tradgedy that is white people dancing.
“I think I can pretend to be just friends for one night -- I’m just gonna be so happy that we’ll do something public together, you know? Our dancing skills combined are good, just not seperately.”
Kim turned around looking startled. “Oh! I’m sorry was I singing too loud? I didn’t know anyone could hear me!”
Mariah looked at her, a smile clearly visible on her face. “No, you were singing the perfect volume. I just happened to walk by and I heard you.”
“The sun’ll come out Tomorrow Bet your bottom dollar That tomorrow There’ll be sun!“
“That sounds amazing, -- sorry for intruding but, wow yeah.. So good!”
“Oh right, sorry.” He smiled, nudging her back playfully. Adam’s smile faded quickly, shaking his head. “No, no it’s not that I don’t want to talk. We can if you want, I just..thought it might be nice to think about something else for a while. In my room, I have a pack of cards and I thought we could play some cards or poker.”
“Cards, huh? I think that sounds like a really great idea. I mean, we can still talk and have some sort of fun in here too.” Mariah nodded, running her fingers through her brunette hair. “So, if that wasn’t clear; yes, I’d like that.”
Speaking of, there is a very real dance coming up… I know it’s kind of hard because of our situation and stuff, and we usually just resort to pizza and netflix, but… would you want to go?
“I know we’re not suppose to but, I really -- I really don’t want to care for just one moment. So, a very real dance, I’m gonna have to definitely say yes. Although ‘m not much of a dancer, but for you? Totally anything.”
I wish some of my boyfriend’s smart would just rub off onto me. I would not have just spent half the weekend doing homework then. Why are equations so difficult?
“Because getting smart isn’t like getting an illness or something, and it totally sucks. But, equations -- they can’t be too hard. Isn’t there a tutor around here somewhere?”
See if I were sleeping, then that would mean this is a dream…. and I’m pretty certain it’s real.
“Y’know, you’re right.. ‘nd I can’t say that I would want it any other way. This my favorite part ‘bout things being real.”
