The story behind the quote:

This happened during the “Musical Touken Ranbu ~Atsukashiyama~ Paris” performance for the stage franchise, the Musical Touken Ranbu, where Sato Ryuji plays the character of Kashuu Kiyomitsu :D

It was the first time they would perform in Paris (and the first time that they would be performing in a country outside the Asian region), but during the performance, one of the cast members he was closest to, which is Kitazono Ryo, was diagnosed with retinal detachment, and had to undergo surgery.

Ryuji is very close to Ryo, and was by Ryo’s side during this difficult time (as evidenced from his Tweet asking for the fans to keep Ryo in their hearts even though he couldn’t perform, which can be found: HERE )

However, the pain that Ryo was going through clearly had an effect on Ryuji, and he eventually broke down into tears. During the performance, NHK was doing a special feature about the performance, and the staff managed to catch him crying backstage, hidden away from everyone.

Ryuji is the type of person who always maintains a strong facade around his friends and co-stars, acting as the pillar to the people around him, and won’t let anyone see him cry (said friends and co-stars have commented on how rare it is to see him in such a state), which is probably why the sight of Ryuji crying (and, even though it wasn’t Ryo’s fault, the sight of Ryuji crying because of him) still haunts Ryo even until this recent interview.
