“One in blue?” Kiara repeated, glancing around the room before pulling a frilly blue tutu out of a box. “Looks like you’re in luck.”
“Ah, gracias, señorita!” she winked at Kiara, taking the blue tutu and putting it on over her school skirt. “Okay, be honest, how good do I look right now?”
The way she repeated his words wasn’t exactly reassuring. He felt his heart pounding as he waited for the answer, and when it came, his tight chest relaxed and his fingers stopped fidgeting. “I can’t wait.” He said honestly. He couldn’t help the excitement rising in him, now that he knew they were going together.
A laugh left her lips as she hugged her present to her. “Me too.” Maria caught his gaze for a second, and all she could do was grin at him before common sense interrupted her and she shook her head, blinking to wake herself up. “But, um, okay--should we--what time is it? Is class starting soon?”
Manolo’s eyes followed her hands as she fixed her hair and he moved back around, smiling down at her and nodding. “I’m glad you like it. Really.” He admitted. If she didn’t like it he would have felt bad, like he disappointed her.
“So, Maria,” he started, his voice naturally flipping the R as he said her name. He may as well ask now, while he had the opportunity. “I was wondering… would you want to go to Prom with me?”
Still busy being happy over the locket, the question caught her off guard as she fiddled with it. Maria looked up, arching an eyebrow. “To Prom? With you?” she echoed, blinking. Realising how odd she sounded, she cleared her throat, straightening her back and holding her head high. “I’d be happy to.”
Manolo felt all the satisfaction in the world, knowing that she liked what he’d spent hours pacing around and trying to think of. “Of course.” Taking the chain from her, he went around so he was facing her back and wrapped it around her neck, fiddling for a moment before letting the clasp hold onto one of the chain’s loops. “There. All done.”
She recoiled a bit as the cool chain fell on her skin, but she fixed her hair and looked down to see it shining. “Best birthday ever. Thank you, Manolo,” she grinned. “I won’t forget this,” she promised, putting all the photos back into the box.
Manolo savoured the moments where she had her head in his shoulder and he leaned his head lightly against hers. He let her pull away though and he watched intently, eyes following her hand as she put the photos down on the little table near them. The locket was a gold circle with a matching chain, but he’d made sure that it would fit the photo. He’d actually taken the photo around when he was looking for the right necklace, so he could make sure it would fit.
Seeing the look in her eyes when she opened the locket was more than enough. His smile widened until he was beaming along with her and he met her eyes, shrugging a little bit. “I try.” He said a little playfully.
“Oh, shush,” she nudged him, but the grin on her face said it all. Closing the locket, she undid the chain and offered it to him. “Can you help me put it on? I’m hopeless with these.”
“What are you talking about? I can totally pull this off. Come on, you try one.”
“I would but I don’t think the colour really matches my eyes. Do you have one in blue?”
Manolo waited as she started looking through the pictures, watching her face intently for what was coming. He laughed a little as suddenly she was pulling him into a hug, but wrapped his arms back around her anyway. “Everything you missed, yeah… Check the bottom of the box.” He whispered, having put a small box with a locket inside. It was simple, he wished he could have gotten something a little nicer, but it was what fit the picture he wanted to use.
Feeling his arms wrap around her made her smile wider and she buried her head in his shoulder. As soon as he told her to check the rest of the box though, she cleared her throat, pulling away from Manolo with a small smile. Tucking her hair behind her ear, she took out the rest of the photos and put them carefully on the nearest surface, before taking out the locket.
Maria opened the locket and could feel the tears prick her eyes as she looked down at a photo of her, Manolo and Joaquin, young and beaming. “You’re unbelievable,” she whispered, looking up at Manolo.
“Oh, probably no one.” Manolo told her with a little chuckle, holding out the gift even after she’d punched his shoulder. “I know I didn’t have to, but I wanted to. Trust me, just open it.” He was beaming, wanting to see the look on her face when she opened up the box of photos of their home. There were pictures of the three of them before she left, of he and Joaquin, of just he or Joaquin, anything. Nearly everything that she missed in San Angel, there were pictures of.
Giving him a look of disbelief, she took the box gingerly in her hands. As she opened it, she smiled at him. “Oh, Manolo, this is so nice of you--” she was cut off by seeing the first picture on top of the pile. Maria, Manolo and Joaquin at the railway station, the night she left. She gasped, picking up that photo to see the one beneath it, and another, and another--even a photo of her father with Joaquin, and Manolo dressed as a matador. “I can’t believe it. This is...this is everything--”
Manolo chuckled at her denying that he had to get her a gift, fiddling a little with the wrapped present behind his back. Looking down at the forever singing card though, he just rolled his eyes. “It’s a nice thing to do though, maybe he didn’t know it would keep singing.” He tried to explain, trying not to laugh again while saying it. “So you don’t want this?” He asked, pulling the package around and holding it out to her.
“Who even knows with my father?” she sighed, shrugging with a smile. Seeing the package emerge from behind him, Maria’s eyebrows shot up and she let out a laugh, stepping forward and hitting him lightly on the shoulder. “Oh, you idiota--Manolo, you didn’t have to!”
“You’d replace me so quickly? I’m hurt,” he exclaimed, pressing his hand to his chest in mock pain. “Don’t worry, I’ve been bringing my A game since I was around six, maybe, five–those two years blur together. Though, you doing some of the work for me does sound pretty appealing. You can be my sidekick,” Buzz joked, playfully nudging her arm.
“Sorry, my friend, but you’re expendable.” Maria shook her head with a smile before feigning a shocked gasp. “Sidekick? Oh, no, I am no one’s sidekick. Get used to sharing the limelight or you have an archenemy in your hands.” Just then, the bell rang and she almost jumped out of her skin. “--oh, God, that was loud. So... do you have class now?”
“Uh- no, I’ve got no idea what you’re talkin’ about.”
“Really? You were the only other person here and you definitely didn’t touch that now broken vase?”
“The drama department has some really cool stuff, don’t you think?”
“Yeah, they do, but maybe a big green tutu isn’t really your style?”
He looked at her, had no one been told of what had happened to the boys? “I raised them.” he nodded. “They washed up on neverland. Some boat had sunk or something, they were too young to tell me anything but nonsense. I looked after them. Raised them for ten years.” he told her before using the youngest as an example “Tootles was six.” He just shook his head at her thanks, he still didn’t like birthdays. “I’ve not even been to a class yet, I landed here with my ice cream and got told the rules I think I wasn’t really listening. Magic? Oh yeah do I have magic.”
“No, no, wait,” she shook her head slowly, furrowing her eyebrows at him as she tried to make sense of everything. “Neverland? I’m assuming that’s an island. You...you really did take care of them?” Maria paused again, and when Peter mentioned Tootles’ age, her eyebrows shot up. “If he was six, you couldn’t have been more than ten--and you raised them?” she asked, baffled. Magic had always fascinated her and here was another person with something undiscovered, but she couldn’t let it go.
Peter grinned, so people knew the lost boys. They had been getting up to stuff while they’d been here. He was so proud. “They’re my boys. My brothers. I raised them.” he told her simply. He was the leader, the oldest. He’d kept them alive for nine or so years. He’s taught them how to read and such for goodness sake -after he learnt how form the fairies. “ ‘appy Birthday.” he said, he didn’t count the event as happy, but it was still an event none the less. “Nineteen…”
She’d been all right with everything until Peter had said he had raised them. “You...you raised them? So you all lived together then?” Maria knew nothing of Tootles’ past, he was the Lost Boy she knew most, but she’d been under the impression that he had parents and a family. “Thank you,” she smiled. “So you’re a Fifth Year! You learn much more exciting things--oh, wait, do you have magic?”
“I’ll see how it goes.” he agreed “My lost boys are already here, they’ll make it worth while I’m sure.” he grinned. He’d need to find the boys and let the games begin. “That’s a while, should be an expert. How old are you?” he asked her.
“Wait, the Lost Boys? Tootles, Nibs, and...” she drew a blank on the others and shook her head. “What do you mean they’re yours?” Maria arched an eyebrow at the odd question, crossing her arms and holding her head high. “I’m eighteen, just last Sunday. How old are you?”
He chuckled when she laughed. So she had a good sense of humour. Good, they’d got on really nice then. “Not really, but you know. Have to do things you’re not sure about at least some of the time. So whatever, I’ll make it work. You been here long?”
“Not really? Lots of people said that at first but it’s actually really nice here,” she said helpfully. “But I can’t argue with that logic. Jump in headfirst, right? And, yes, I’ve been here...” Maria looked up, thinking, “...since before Christmas last year.”
