A miniature of Princess Frederica Charlotte of Prussia, Duchess of York and Albany. The only child of Frederick William II and his first wife, Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-WolfenbĂĽttel, she was born on this day, May 7th, in 1767.
She was married to Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, the second son of George III and Queen Charlotte, when she was 24 years old. Frederick’s elder brother, the future George IV, approved of the marriage because it meant his brother could provide an heir to the throne and he would not have to rid himself of his illegal marriage to form a dynastic one.
The marriage wasn’t a happy one though, and the couple had no children together. They separated and Frederica retired to live in Oatlands Park, Weybridge, where she would die at the age of 53.
