Stop The Violence.
New video from Japanese Blossoms: Aftershock!
We got our first placement with Unions on the new UFC special, Cruz vs Faber! Itâs pretty sick and features our unreleased song Bury- the EP releases in August, but you can catch a sneak peek here (the song starts at 20:12)
New video from my Japanese Blossoms album! Here's Metal Bird, which a special "behind the video" note from me.
When I was planning this video, I happened to stumble upon a promotional video created for Pan Am. It was quite perfect for the song! I was fascinated by the vintage feel, by the fabulous ladies in their gloves and hats that boarded the plane. I loved the detailed shots of Pan Am planes in the 60s, it felt very progressive and cutting edge for advertising and marketing in that era. The song is about shirking the need to cater and appeal to people's opinions. I've felt the pressure so many times- the pressure to please, the pressure to compete, the pressure to succeed within the perimeters that another person had set for me. This song was written about the feeling that I have when I depart BNA to LAX- I see the buildings grow smaller, the people that made me feel so specific become so much smaller in the distance. It's about the freedom that flying brings, the moment when you realize how small the things that had overwhelmed you actually are. "Buildings 50 stories tall of people, you can't please them all- watch the skyline as they start to fade". It's the moment when you breathe, when you realize that you can't control it all and that you shouldn't be so focused on TRYING to control it all. Create your art, do what resounds fully in your being. Don't "be different" just to be different, create what resonates within your soul. If it doesn't make you a little uncomfortable, don't release it. If it doesn't ruffle some feathers, it's not there yet. All of us want to be accepted, all of us want to get the pat on the back (the proverbial "atta boy") but sometimes it's not about that. Sometime's it's about saying what you need to say, whether it fits within in commercial constricts or not. So say what you need to say, do what you need to do- via a song, or a blog post, or a personal statement to yourself about who you thought you'd be. Don't be confined by the people that you feel required to appeal to, don't appeal to them. You can do it on your own, without them. I'm living proof.
NEW VIDEO! Over the next month, I'll be releasing a video for each of the songs on my Japanese Blossoms record. The first one is the title track for the record, Japanese Blossoms.
When I was searching for footage for this video, I came upon this old home movie from the 1940s (or 50s, I can't tell). There's something about the posed awkwardness of the subjects, a calculated presentation of the family- it drew me in. The little girls were obviously told how to walk and how to pose- the camera was new to all of them. I can't tell you how many times the family did the "stoic-pose-then-walk-towards-the-camera" bit in the original footage, individually with each of the family members. It was calculated, and yet vulnerable- you can see their discomfort in front of the camera, the hesitation and the unfamiliarity. It was striking to me and I couldn't get it out of my mind. I don't know who this family is, but I would love to know them. They led a beautiful life and I am honored to have them as the stars in my Japanese Blossoms video.
The song was originally written about the loss of love, but when I watched this footage and began compiling this video, I realized the video had become about the loss of childhood. The little girls play a main theme in the film, the father and the mother threaded throughout. This footage reminded me of my childhood, the little girls felt familiar- childhood is a beautiful thing and we all lose it at some point, and the lyrics to this song took on new meaning to me as I began pairing this footage with it. Funny how nothing has changed when it feels like nothing's the same, yes?
