Browsing the Auctions
How does one focus while browsing through vast selections of auctions houses? I certainly don’t know. I typically begin browsing in design then eventually get lost in Art then somehow end up in Jewelry...
My interests are sometimes so random--I’ll even end up meandering from Neolithic China to 20th century Korean Contemporary Art. It’s mad and somewhat stimulates A.D.D? (0_0)
I prefer to consider myself a “graduated novice collector” from a “beginner avid collector”. Ehh, (or something like that...) My new obsession is Asian Vernacular Art (South East Asian, and Eastern Asian).
Much to see and little time to learn...
A Self-Learning Process
To help me understand my truest self, I sometimes challenge my beliefs and passions to help identify what is important to me. This exercise entails up a variety of activities, whether it be prioritizing tasks, balancing budgets, or even sacrificing a little here and there, it helps broaden the picture and put things in perspective.
My visit to Vietnam helped provide a little piece of that truth. I was exposed to its traditions and culture in such a grandiose scale that it felt like culture shock, despite being a Vietnamese descendant.
After returning from my trip, I felt a little more lost than found. Despite the identity-revealing experience of a lifetime, I probably questioned my interests even more than before. Maybe this is a result of an interest spark or a sign from above that this is what I should be exploring more of.
Currently, I am studying Asian Folk Art from ancient to modern-day Asia. Particularly with interest in melding American modernism (50s-60s) with Asian Folk Art. With cultural appropriation and a bit of flare, I’m looking to find what will influence and inspire people. This will be the beginning of a new chapter...
