Ladies (or anyone reading this, really, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, because this probably applies to everyone),
At some point in time, someone’s going to hurt you. It’s inevitable. It’s life. This happens.
Shortly after that point in time, someone’s probably going to tell you to just play it cool. “Don’t show them that you’re angry, just act normal and unaffected, just be cool.” My own mother told me this fairly recently, because I’m still smarting from a sting to the ego and a betrayal of my trust by someone I was beginning to trust and invest in emotionally, and my trust does not come easy.
And I told her that I would absolutely not play it cool with this person because I was affected, and I felt disrespected. (She meant well, and she saw my point in the end after I explained it to her.)
Do not let the patriarchy — or anyone else — tell you that you need to play it cool if that’s not how you roll, if that’s not how you feel, if that’s not how you’re reacting to the situation. If you’re angry, be angry. That is your right, you are entitled to it, you are allowed to feel the way you feel. If you get labeled a crazy bitch for it, so what? Where has playing it cool gotten you?
In my experience, all that it has done — all that it continues to do — is reinforce this bad behavior, this belief that they can keep pulling this kind of crap (whatever kind of crap it is), that they can continue to treat you, and others after you, badly or with disrespect and get away with it, because they have gotten away with it before, because we have let them get away with it, because we’ve been consistently cool about it.
So no, if that’s what cool does, I don’t care to be cool, and neither should you if that’s not your truth. If you’ve treated me poorly, my God, am I going to make you feel it.
