In a fiery speech on the Senate floor Wednesday ahead of the chamber’s passage of a massive coronavirus stimulus bill, Sen. Bernie Sanders ripped his Republican colleagues for doing everything in their power to ensure that poor and vulnerable people receive less financial assistance than they desperately need in this moment of nationwide crisis.

“Now I find that some of my Republican colleagues are very distressed. They’re very upset that somebody who’s making 10, 12 bucks an hour might end up with a paycheck for four months, more than they received last week,” Sanders said, referring to the group of Republican senators who threatened to delay passage of the stimulus bill over its temporary expansion of unemployment benefits, which they described as overly generous. So this is a personal post towards GameStop who wants to consider themselves and essential store, FUCK YOU, fuck you for thinking you need to put your employees at risk, fuck you for not adding extra sick pay to them saying they only need what they have, fuck you for not providing your stores with the proper shit to clean and sanitize with. I recently just read the Vice article that had employees although anonymous confirmed this. And just, I'm ashamed I shopped there, I'm ashamed I kept putting my money to the CEOs who don't give a damn about their employees. I've never been angrier in my life, but to say you think you're important as a video game store and tell your employees to the the cops your essential, you're fucking trash man.

Three year olds get it. Why don’t you.

I’m now a family medicine doctor in BC, Canada, so this post is focused on our current situation, but likely applies to all of North America and other countries worldwide who are starting to experience community spread of this devastating virus.

While everyone is talking about social distancing, shout out to my brethren:

To the ones in the service industry, being exposed to the panicking public by the hundreds and thousands: we salute you.

To the ones in the grocery stores, stocking shelves with whatever product can be scrounged up: we salute you.

To the ones trained in safe food handling, who are preparing the ingredients the rest of the people are stocking up to cook at home: we salute you.

To the ones working longer hours than they ever signed up for: we salute you.

To the ones standing at cash registers, unable to sit, handling cash, face to face with an unprecedented number of people: we salute the fuck outta you.

To all those with thankless jobs that are considered “starter jobs”, “just jobs for after school”, those with jobs that no one realized how essential they are: we salute you.

To the ones cleaning the restrooms, sweeping the floors, emptying the trash, and keeping the public spaces clean: we salute you.

To those who can’t stay home, who have to be working through all this to make sure people can get the resources they need so they can self isolate: we salute you.

(And donate to your local emergency shelters, they’ll need the help now more than usual)

it’s bothering me how people are acting like immunocompromised people or people with underlying health conditions are rare unicorns who only exist in hospitals and nursing homes or are already hidden away in their homes.

no. no, someone on immunosuppressants after a transplant, someone with autoimmune illness (of which there are dozens and dozens: type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, IBD, lupus, etc), someone on steroid medication, someone with cystic fibrosis, someone with copd, someone with asthma, someone with congenital heart defects...all these people and more can be and are young, active people in society who likely go to school with you, work with you, sit at the table next to you in a cafe, go to the same bank as you.

please consider this when you say that you exist in a bubble in the world of just healthy young people who can’t be really harmed by COVID and thus precautions and awareness can be relaxed more than organizations like WHO and the CDC are suggesting. remove from your minds the idea that chronically ill and disabled people are only of a certain age cohort, only exist in certain places, and only look a certain way. and also care for them not as if they are necessary casualties of this pandemic but as if losses of them to the illness are as devastating as any “healthy” unsuspecting person too. thanks.
