Arendelle’s winter solstice celebration is threatened when a fearsome draugr is awakened in this return to the world of Disney’s Frozen. 

Determined to get everything right, Queen Anna is stressed about planning Arendelle’s Polar Nights festival, which will not only celebrate the winter solstice, but also her sister Elsa’s birthday. On a camping trip meant to get her mind off things for a bit, she, her fiance, Kristoff; his reindeer, Sven; Elsa; and snowman Olaf tell scary stories around the campfire. Kristoff tells the story of sisters Sissel and Inger and how Sissel, neighboring Vesterland’s future queen, was killed by Inger out of jealousy. It is told that Sissel became a draugr, a reanimated corpse that causes terrible storms when seeking revenge. Following the tale, a storm hits the campers, and when they return to Arendelle, Anna, Kristoff, and the townspeople’s memories are starting to fade, jeopardizing the festival plans. Drawing on Norse mythology, the draugr is fairly scary, making this novel veer at times into fantastical horror, but this element is generally tempered quickly with levity. Written with fans of the movies in mind, little worldbuilding is done, with the focus instead on the beloved, charismatic characters and their repartee as well as the sisterly ties.

Movie fans will love this next adventure. (Fantasy. 8-12)

Something Very Exciting came in the mail! Thank you so much @marimancusi for the advanced reader copy. Spoiler-free review below the cut!

Polar Nights: Cast into Darkness is a thoroughly entertaining action/mystery with enough twists to keep you guessing and enough angst and real emotion to pull you in. All of our favorite Arendellians appear: Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf, Sven, and the spirits as well as favorite minor characters like Ada and Tuva, Wael, Oaken, and Sorensen. They all play a part in a way that keeps the world building consistent and even ties up lose ends from Frozen 2. We see right from the start how often the sisters are together, how Queen Anna is doing with her role, what Elsa is up to as the Snow Queen, and what's going on with the Northuldra now that they are no longer locked inside the Enchanted Forest.

Kristoff says "no spoilers" at the beginning of the tale as he begins a story by the campfire, and I make it a habit to listen to burly mountain men. So while I won't share plot details, I will say that I think Frozen fans will love this, especially ones who have wanted more time for the sisters to process the impact of lost memories and for Anna to demonstrate her love for Kristoff. Olaf has a particularly charming and hilarious storyline.

This is mainly a story about sisters, though gems for Kristanna and Agduna shippers are sprinkled throughout of both the angst and fluff variety. The alternating Anna and Elsa chapters are seamless and the pace builds steadily with lots of travel. For you adult Frozen fans, plan to read it in one sitting. It's aimed for kids ages 8- 12 who I think will really enjoy the creepy aspects of the mystery and of course spending time with favorite characters.

Keep your slippers and s'mores nearby and read on a dark and stormy night for maximum enjoyment!
