Analysis on Leona Kingscholar's character.
To understand our dear lion we first have to dive into his past, his family life.
From a young age Leona always knew he was the second son, the hated one, 'the backup plan' if something happened to the first born, felena. Felena was the complete opposite of Leona in people's eyes; approachable, kind, the loved one and the one who was BORN to be king. That made him despise his older brother so much, because if he were the one to be born first, he would have this all. In Leona's eyes felena was the reason for him being looked down on AND he's right, people are afraid of Leona BECAUSE HE'S the second one, because he could be a potential threat to felena, but despite this Leona cannot properly hate felena, because he is a supportive brother, he did nothing wrong, did he? He didn't ask to be born first, but Leona needed to put his resentment somewhere, the resentment of not being enough to be a king ONLY because he's second born. At first he tried his best in his studies and his duties, but what did people see in this? Nothing because he WASN'T the first born, he wasn't the crown prince, so why did they need to care? This makes Leona come to the conclusion that no matter how much Leona actually tries it won't change a thing because he will always be looked down on, always being feared. His laziness isn't a genuine trait, it's a defense mechanism. This way he avoids dealing with failure, what if he actually tried and it just... wasn't enough? What does he do then? This is a big part of why he doesn't try.
Everyone keeps telling him that he has potential, but if he tries his best and it still doesn't work, he truly becomes failure. This is why he's so afraid of hope. Because if he gets his hopes, tires to actually do something and it still doesn't work, then it was all for nothing, as he thinks.
If you don't try, you can't fail, if you don't hope, you can't be disappointed.
And I quote this from one of the people's analysis I heard months ago, "I could have done it if I wanted to, I just didn't feel like doing it." This is how he protects himself. This way he doesn't have to face the failure of trying your best and still not succeeding.
Then Cheka was born, the next heir to the throne. In his eyes this finally and lastly ruined all his chances of becoming a king, but it wasn't Cheka's fault. He never asked for any of this, but this way Leona has someone to blame his misfortunes on, this is what inferiority complex is. We also see this with his hatred towards Malleus Draconia, but we'll get to this later.
The reason why he avoids his homeland so much is because it reminds him of everything that he couldn't have, reminds him of the hatred and fear the people of his homeland have towards him and this is where the nrc comes in. For him the night raven college was sort of an escape, is an escape, to avoid his homeland. In nrc his dormmates admire him and call him king, this makes him feel a little better about everything in his life. And because of this despite all his efforts to not care, in the end he still did, he still started to hope.
Now this is where malleus comes in picture, malleus represents everything Leona is running away from. He's one of the five greatest mages in the whole Twisted Wonderland, he's the crown prince of briar valley and that's what makes Leona hate him so much, because he's everything he has ever wanted to be in life. And there comes the spelldrive tournament, malleus's dorm, diasomnia kept winning every year on the tournament and this is one of the reasons Leona tried to cheat, because knew that he would never manage to beat diasomnia because of malleus, after all he is one of the strongest mages in the world, he would never be able to win if he played fair. So he planned to sabotage the diasomnia dorm, even if in the end it didn't work, but Leona accepted this, because he expected the outcome. He knew it would happen, because he always prepared himself for failure, he thought it would make it hurt less, and for him perhaps it did.
This is the part one since I still have some analysing to do lol, I'm pretty tired of doing more rn bc I lit watched and read so many analysis of Leona's character and the canon shi, interactions this is GENUINELY exhausting bruu.
Anyways, see y'all in the next part!
