having NEVER been to vegas , the gaudiness of it all was overwhelming to her senses , to say the least. it looked like a set from a movie , she thought in awe. the sudden shrill in her ear caused marina to flinch back , dusky hues darting straight to the other woman. however , shock subsided quickly as soon as she was able to comprehend the other’s excitement , a smile sitting on her lips. “ are you gonna hit your head on a nearby garage door next ? “ she pondered , feigning curiosity as if she didn’t already know the answer.

robin and thea bamford had adopted marina when she was only a few months old. adoption was not on top of their agenda, but after trying for children for two years to learn mr. bamford had no “””swimmers””” to offer, they decided adopting was their best bet. after marina came a couple more kids ( river and maren ), but we’ll get to them later.
the good news was that the bamford family was very rich. living in the suburbs of san diego in their comfy little gated community, marina always had a silver spoon stuck in her mouth. the bad news is that while her dad was generally alright, her mom had a god complex so big that it took up the room and a little bit of the next room.
never characterized as “humble”, thea made sure that everyone in the house knew she came first to whatever the situation could be and how important of a role she played in their everyday lives. marina never questioned it growing up. to her, that was just how her mom acted and she was pretty sure all moms acted the same way.
( death tw ) around the time marina was twelve, her father passed away from a cerebral aneurysm. it was caught too late so by the time they knew something was wrong, he was already gone. it turned the bamford household upside down; river, being the oldest, moved out and left for santa barbara while marina was left to take care of seven-year-old maren due to their mother staying locked in her room for most of the day.
( abuse tw ) thea eventually came back out, but she was better alone in her room. she never was the nicest with her children, but she never laid a finger on marina until then. at first it was a sharp smack to the cheek, but it just got so much worse with time. she grew to despise the woman and would stay outside of the house as much as she could.
fast forward to senior year of high school, she got accepted to syracuse which was her first choice. it sounded like a dream come true, but the guilt to stay in the area outweighed her wants. she was too scared leaving maren alone with their mom and although the youngest bamford was the favorite child, thea was unpredictable. sure, river could’ve checked up on maren once in a while since he was only a few hours away, but he hadn’t checked up on the girls once since leaving. so, she hung up the dream of syracuse and accepted the only college in the area that she applied for, lexington.
so now here she is in all her glory studying journalism in hopes to become a name brand radio personality. nothing much has changed at home, but marina feels much more capable of breathing now that she lives on campus and away from ever-so controlling mother.
personality
so, lemme start off with her label. i chose quixotic because marina has always been described as starry-eyed. she’s always had ideas that were impractical with the inevitable staring at her dead in the face. like, she expects so much from a place of naivety and doesn’t understand why things don’t go that way. she thinks with 99.9% of her heart than her head. some people swear she’s dumb with her head stuck in the clouds, but i think she just sort of built this whole utopia where she can keep herself safe and unreachable.

she’s always had a hard time keeping people around, but the people who do stick around she treats like royalty ndsjdfndsj. like, her friends come before anyone else and she makes sure that they know that. would absolutely take a bullet for them.
has a weird crush on one of the impractical jokers but idk which one so we’re gonna keep it a secret for now.
as for relationships....idk man. she’s either too into them or not into them at all. she can come off pretty overbearing, but she falls quickly. she doesn’t like to because it gives up this illusion of being unattainable, but she does and it embarrasses her and then when they eventually break up she’s on a bender of doing impulsive shit for like a week. we stan a healthy queen.
once cried because she thought she met 2 chainz in the school library and even took a pic with him but then realized she was just really h*gh and it wasn’t 2 chainz at all.
makeup is a personality trait for her. she’s obsessed with the stuff and no she’s not wearing it 24/7 but she’s always up at 3 in the morning recreating an eye look she saw on tiktok or learning new techniques from youtube. she’s always doing something with pigment.
