I think the West is the only place calling them ISIS; the Middle East and elsewhere calls them Daesh. Here’s the thing: Daesh hate being called Daesh. Daesh wants to be called the Islamic State because Daesh thinks it gives them legitimacy and validity. Plus, Daesh is very insulting to them, so I think we should call Daesh Daesh as a fuck you to Daesh.

What does Daesh mean?

Technically, Daesh is an acronym for their full name in Arabic (al-Dawla al-Islamiya al-Iraq al-Sham), but it also sounds very similar to Arabic words meaning “one who crushes things underfoot” and “one who sows discord” (“daes” and “dahes”, respectively) so that’s why Arabs like to call them that.

I’ve also been uncomfortable with how much emphasis has been placed on Caitlyn Jenner’s beauty by cis people.

Yes she is beautiful.

But a woman doesn’t have to be beautiful to deserve respect or to be a woman.

And when I see the emphasis being placed on a trans woman’s beauty when she comes out with comments like “wow she really pulled herself together,” it makes me wonder if what my fellow cis people are really saying is “she looks like what I think a woman should look like.” And where does that leave trans women who don’t meet normative (and especially cisnormative) standards of beauty?

I just want to make sure we are celebrating the beauty and worth of all trans women, not just those who are white, famous, and wealthy enough to afford any form of physical transition they desire. And that as cis people we’re being self-critical of the ways we think and speak about trans people.

Brenda was:

A bisexual, polyamorous woman and activist

Known as the Mother of Pride for her work in organizing the first LGBT Pride events

A participant in the Stonewall Riots

An active member of the Gay Liberation Front, Gay Activists Alliance, Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights, BiPAC, and BiNET USA, among others

Co-founder of the New York Area Bisexual Network

Founder of the first Alcoholics Anonymous chapter for bisexuals

An incredibly important figure in the LGBT community, who paved the way for Pride and LGBT activism as we know it today

“Het”-partnered bisexuals don’t just belong at Pride, they were integral to its creation.

(Bonus facts: Brenda was also Jewish, a sex worker, and an outspoken feminist. I highly recommend learning about her because she was seriously an amazing woman.)
