A few months before Karina was due to be born, her parents were forced to flee their village in hopes of a better life like all of the other families who joined the Madrigals’ in fleeing. They started out alone but crossed paths with the main group on their way and decided to put their faith into these strangers and join them. A month after the Encanto was formed Karina was born.

From the time she was a baby she spent a lot of time with the Madrigal triplets. Her parents made sure to pay back Alma’s sacrifice in anyway they could. Her father helped gather cattle and feed the village while her mother would volunteer to babysit for Alma while she helped build the community up.

She was always very close to Bruno even as a tot. They’d toddle around in the beginnings of her mother’s garden and she’d constantly get caught munching on the flowers that grew sporadically in their yard.

Whenever Alma came to pick up the kids, her and Bruno would run off and hide so they wouldn’t have to stop playing. Usually somewhere in the house, but sometimes they’d wander off somewhere they shouldn’t have and get an earful from both parents.

Anytime she would get in trouble she would run and crouch behind Bruno to shield herself from her mother’s disapproving glare.

She was an organized child and loved wearing frilly things. She would throw a tantrum anytime she got a mess on her clothes. She would also line up all her toys and belongings in her room up against the wall for no real reason. Her parents found that to be very odd, but didn’t think much else of it.

Background

Mila was born to Mirabel when she was 16 years old. Her biological father was not a good person, so he was not involved in her life in anyway. In honor of Camilo and Dolores saving Mirabel from the situation she was in, she chose to name her baby girl after them, but to call her Mila. In Spanish, Mila also comes from the shortened version of the name “Milagros,” which means “miracles.”

Mila quickly became Mirabel’s light in the darkness. Mirabel referred to her as her little miracle all the time. As a baby, Mila was very easygoing and happy most of the time. Mirabel loved watching her hit all of her milestones with her family by her side.

Mila grew into a curious, outgoing, and energetic child. She was full of so many questions and she was very nosy, rarely minding her own business. The smallest things got her excited and she was constantly on the move, only slowing down to eat or sleep. She was a kind soul, even from a young age. She handmade Mirabel an embroidered butterfly at 4 years old (with the help of a seamstress in town) for Mirabel’s 21st birthday, simply because she wanted to do something special for her mom.

She got glasses at age 4 and she chose the same kind of glasses as Mirabel. She loved having glasses, because she got to match her mama and her Abuelo Agustín.

When Mila got the gift of empathy at age 5, it made her so excited. She loved being able to help others feel better. Even as a baby, she was always naturally good at making everyone who met her smile and laugh. She hated when others were sad or mad, because all she wanted was for everyone to be happy. As she got older, she learned to control her gift really well. She could stop herself from feeling someone else’s negative emotion, but then still make them happy again.

When Mila was 9, she gained a wonderful papa when her mama got married to a man named Isaac. She started calling him Papa right away. Isaac was an amazing dad to her from the beginning and loved her like a dad should. Mila became an amazing big sister to her 3 younger siblings, Alejandro, Rosa, and Roman.

Mila grew into a beautiful and kind young lady, who looked so much like her mother. She became a kindergarten teacher, because of her love of children and she wanted to be able to help them through their tough emotions. All of her past and present students love her so much. When Mila had her own child, a baby girl, she chose to name her after her mom.
