Mystique, féérique, magique… La forêt de Brocéliande suscite l’intérêt par sa simple évocation. Dit-on haut lieu de règne du roi Arthur, témoin des sortilèges de Merlin l’enchanteur, haute retraite de la dame du lac, endroit qui a vu grandir le beau Lancelot… cette magnifique forêt a été une source intarissable d’inspiration pour un grand nombre de romanciers du Moyen-âge.

Les histoires qui en ont découlé ont fait d’elle le théâtre de contes et de légendes extraordinaires, marquant lecteurs et visiteurs de génération en génération. Aujourd’hui, Brocéliande figure parmi les sites les plus emblématiques de la région bretonne.

Le roi Arthur : légende ou réalité ?

Brocéliande ramène inévitablement vers celui qui aurait été le souverain de cette mystique forêt. Celui qui, selon les récits, aurait été le seul capable d’arracher la fameuse épée « Excalibur » de la roche sur laquelle elle était fixée depuis des années : Le Roi Arthur.

A-t-il réellement existé ?

À dire vrai, il n’est pas possible de confirmer l’existence ou non de ce mythique souverain. Car, même dans les histoires les plus anciennes de la Grande-Bretagne, on ne retrouve pas sa trace. Cependant, un poème gallois écrit aux environs du 7e siècle et relatant la victoire des anglais contre les Bretons loue les exploits et la bravoure d’un certain « Arthur ». Mais rien n’en permet d’affirmer qu’il s’agit du roi Arthur de Brocéliande.

Selon les légendes par ailleurs, le roi Arthur aurait eu des origines surnaturelles. Fils d’Uther Pendragon, sa naissance aurait été influencée par les enchantements de Merlin l’enchanteur.

Le château de Comper

En revanche, l’on sait que le château de Comper, souvent cité dans les mythes comme le lieu de résidence du roi, existe réellement. Il se situe au cœur de la forêt de Brocéliande, à quelques kilomètres seulement du bourg de Concoret.

Construit en réalité au 13e siècle, il est aujourd’hui considéré comme le Centre Imaginaire Arthurien et abrite une salle d’exposition consacrée aux fameux chevaliers de la Table Ronde. En dehors, les visiteurs pourront apprécier le magnifique parc de Comper et admirer l’illustre lac de la fée Viviane.

Des visites y sont organisées régulièrement chaque année, et des animations y sont également données, pendant lesquelles l’on peut entrevoir la vie médiévale : contes et spectacles médiévaux sont au rendez-vous !

Lors de votre visite à la forêt de Brocéliande, n’oubliez pas de faire un petit détour au “Tombeau de Merlin”. C’est, à ce jour, un lieu de pèlerinage pour de nombreux touristes, qui y viennent déposer des présents, des mots ou des fleurs. La légende dit en effet que ce lieu porterait bonheur.

Ne passez pas aux côtés de la “fontaine de Jouvence” qui se trouve juste à proximité, ainsi que de la Fontaine de Barenton, qui elle, se situe dans une clairière, en plein cœur de la forêt. On dit que c’est en ce lieu que Merlin rencontra pour la première fois Viviane. Et que les mystérieuses petites bulles qui sortent du tréfonds de cette fontaine seraient le fruit du premier tour de magie que l’enchanteur enseigna à la fée.
