I’ll try to articulate how Drew and Zoey’s relationship stems from Drew’s need for validation from other guys. He wants Zoey because she’s pretty and popular, but it’s less about who she is and more about what having her says about him. Dating the girl everyone notices makes him feel like he’s above the other guys (mainly Henry, Liam, and Jake.) Their relationship is, in many ways, a performance.

We never really see Drew care about what Zoey likes he always seems distracted or annoyed. He assumes she only cares about his money, and because of that, he never looks beyond that assumption. So when she stops asking him for money he’s completely thrown off. (That scene where Drew brings it up to the jomies during lunch is so interesting to me.) If she doesn’t need his money anymore, then what does she need him for? He genuinely doesn’t seem to have an answer to that, and I think that’s what makes their relationship so hollow.

Zoey isn’t a good person by any means, but I think she knows, deep down, exactly what their relationship hinged on. She understands the role she played in it and probably realizes that, despite everything, they’re the kind of couple who could easily end up back together because they’re two sides of the same coin. They validate something in each other, even if it’s for all the wrong reasons.

…Or maybe that’s just me wanting them to get back together because the drama would be incredible.

There’s a lot of hints that Lia might be rich or upper middle class, not Drew level rich. But like mentioning to Zoey about convincing her Dad to buy her jewellery. I also see those uggs in her new design. I headcanon that her parents don’t really give her stuff willy nilly.

Other characters I think are rich: Daisy, her moms paying for a bunch of extra curriculars? Maybe Stacy idk her mom looks richhh.

Drew and Hailey work as great foils in how they handle Jake’s emotional state, especially in the Jailey conversation in episode 7 and the “Dromies” hangout/peer pressure moment in episode 9.

In both situations, Jake is visibly distant and unhappy. Neither Hailey nor Drew actually knows what’s wrong with him in the moment, the difference is in how they respond to that uncertainty.

Hailey notices Jake’s shift and chooses to pull him aside privately. She doesn’t assume the cause or push him to explain in front of others; instead, she creates space for him to speak honestly.

I will admit that Jake’s distress comes from different sources (feeling inadequate after learning Hailey can sing in episode 7, and feeling upset about Saisy in episode 9), but you can still compare how they handle it I think??

Hailey’s instinct is consistently to prioritise privacy and emotional safety. Drew, on the other hand, also notices Jake is upset but responds by addressing it in front of the group. He asks what’s wrong publicly, including Zoey and Lia???? in the moment. While it may come from concern or a desire to “fix” the situation quickly, it removes Jake’s privacy and puts him on the spot socially. It also reflects that Drew doesn’t fully understand how personal Jake’s emotions are or how uncomfortable that kind of exposure might be for him.

The contrast isn’t that one cares and the other doesn’t, it’s that Hailey instinctively uses empathy and discretion, while Drew defaults to wanting complete transparency, which doesn’t always fit Jake’s emotional needs.

What makes the comparison interesting is that Drew is usually framed as popular, socially confident, and well-liked, yet he’s less emotionally attuned than Hailey. I don’t think he’s ever had to be, no one outside of the club calls him out and Drew’s big ego doesn’t really listen to them because frankly, he doesn’t care about their opinion of him.

I need s2 episode that pays homage to s1 ep 2 trust issues but it centres on Milly and Lia. I think it’d be cool you know? I just want a Milly centred episode that actually centres on her. Ep 3 barely had Milly in it, despite it being her episode.

Sometimes I think Rosy tries to soften or erase asshole pre-redemption Jake whenever we get precanon content of him. (Or maybe is too scared to?) It just feels weird seeing Hailey say she doesn’t hate Jake (in the elliot spin off), or having The princess and the songbook be from Hailey’s pov but still cutting to a scene of Jake feeling guilty. Hailey didn’t see that so why should we?

I honestly think it would’ve worked better without that one frame of him feeling bad we’ve already got scenes in s1 showing how Jake need of validation, fear of bullying etc etc.

It makes me worried about how Drew’s redemption (if he even gets one) would be handled. Will Rosy have the club minimise their feelings about Drew just to make redemption easier? Will he get some tragic sad-boy backstory that ends up justifying his actions instead of simply explaining why he behaves the way he does?

Because that already kind of happens with Jake more with the fandom than the series itself, but still a bit in the series too, especially in Episode 7 during the conversation between Hailey and Jake. Jake being bullied in the past sometimes gets treated as an excuse for his shitty behaviour rather than an explanation for it.

And then I start thinking, why would Drew even want to redeem himself? For Jake? I think it’s kind of a flaw if the only reason Drew ends up being cordial with the club is just because he wants Jake back as a friend. Will he still be controlling? does he even care that he’s been shitty to people since middle school, we don’t even see an ounce of remorse due to his apathy toward others that he cannot understand. And that’s assuming he’d even want Jake back in the first place.

Even if he did reconcile with Jake, I find it really hard to believe Hailey and Zander would ever forgive him, especially after he grabbed Hailey’s arm and constantly blamed her for things she didn’t even do. And then that gets me thinking about how much hate Hailey would probably get from the fandom if she doesn’t forgive Drew.

don’t get me started on henriam, I’d like to think that they have very different thoughts on the situation and don’t blindly follow drew the whole season. GUYS WAKE UP PLS PLS PLS.

So, in conclusion, I’m terrified for Season 2, I guess.

Rewatching tmf cuz I haven’t done it in a long time. I completely forgot that in the early episodes lowkey nobody fucks with Drew. Why are they all dissing him in their heads??? Now I’m sad that Drew doesn’t get popularly characterised as extremely off putting in large doses of his presence.

This scene has always made me raise an eyebrow because, in Jake’s nightmare, Zoey and Lia are framed as whispering in his ear and influencing him into believing the club is bad. However, in the actual group discussion, everyone contributes to that pressure in different ways. Despite this, both the narrative framing and parts of the fandom tend to disproportionately blame Zoey and Lia. Lia does contribute more directly to the discussion, but Zoey, compared to the rest of the group (especially Drew), doesn’t really say much of substance beyond reinforcing what others are already saying.

I don’t fully know how to say it properly, It feels like this ends up shifting too much responsibility onto them, which also makes Jake seem less responsible for his own choices, even though he himself understands he’s at fault.

This happens to Hailey too!

Drew defaults to blaming her because it’s easier to believe a girl is “in Jake’s ear” than to accept that Jake is making his own choices. He strips Jake of agency just to avoid admitting he’s being left behind.

Hailey becomes the convenient villain, controlling and manipulative, because that narrative protects Drew’s ego. He doesn’t have to confront Jake, and he definitely doesn’t have to confront himself. And the fandom takes it as fact! He’s an unreliable narrator he’s UNRELIABLE!!!!!!!!

(This might sound a little mean I just came here to rant after seeing a few too many egregious takes on TikTok…)
