Also a whole lot of people need it to hold down a job or stay in school regardless of reproductive risk: it offers menstrual control. It can be the difference between debilitating, bedbound periods and normal function. It’s medicine. It’s also very cheap to produce and returns soooo many thousands of dollars to the economy for every dollar it costs, so don’t let anyone make a false financial argument about it.

Plant-based hair extensions made from banana fibre give Black women a safer, sustainable alternative to synthetic styles

A Black British entrepreneur is launching plant-based hair extensions to provide a safer alternative to synthetic hair which has been linked to cancer. Jacqueline Shaw is the founder and director of The Canerow Company, which makes biodegradable plant-based braiding hair extensions made from Banana tree fibre. From breast cancer to business inspiration Shaw was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021. However what was a tough experience for her sparked an idea to create a product that could provide a safer and healthier alternative to synthetic hair extensions – which are made of man-made fibres often plastics. Speaking to The Voice, she said: “Cancer is too familiar, too many of us, humans, women and Black women are dealing with this, and because of the hair loss I had, it really made me consider what I’m putting in my body and what I’m putting on my body. “When my hair grew back, I didn’t want to put anything toxic or problematic on my hair. -“I knew that the hair I was using before was plastic-based and I didn’t like that, so I was looking at alternatives.”

the other night i tried to make a curry and i got chilli burns all over my face, so i thought to myself ‘hang on, doesn’t milk soothe chilli burns? it does’ and i couldn’t google because i couldn’t see so i just had to blindly feel my way to the fridge and pour out a bowl of milk, and then plant my face in the bowl of milk, anyway at that point the rice cooker went off and triggered a power surge which turned my electricity off, which i didn’t notice at first because i had my face in a bowl of milk and when i did emerge from the dairy prison i thought i had gone blind with chilli burns. so no i don’t really cook much.
