Behind the Script:

Initially in the Reichenbach Fall scene when John and Sherlock are on the phone with one another John asks Sherlock “are you being serious or are you being camp right now?” This line was cut after a focus group reacted negatively to it - citing the dialogue as “out of place and bizarre.” 

Caving to the input and making that change is still one of my biggest regrets when it comes to the show.

Some insight into the filming process for all the aspiring auters out there: sometimes you have to trust your actors.

I told Martin several times over to not strangle this man but he just wouldn’t listen. As much as I wanted to stick with the original script I ended up going along with Martin’s instincts and wrote in John strangling Culverton in every scene they had together. This was the only strangling that made the cut in the editing room but trust me - there’s a LOT more. Perhaps in season five it will come to light.

All that anger Freeman let loose in this episode. Cathartic for him…a little uncomfortable to watch.

I also heard Martin beating Benedict in the morgue scene was unscripted as well! And once he started, he went into a fugue and just couldn’t stop. His acting skills are out of this world… he truly is a visionary.
