I’m Mark. I spend about half my year on steel platforms in the middle of the ocean and the other half trying to remember what grass feels like under my feet.

I started this blog because life on a rig is a strange paradox it’s incredibly loud and busy, yet sometimes the most silent and lonely place on Earth. When you’re surrounded by hundreds of miles of deep water, you start to appreciate the things that truly matter. honesty, a good conversation, and the people waiting for you on solid ground.

A few things about me:

Mechanical Engineer by trade. I like knowing how things work and fixing them when they don't.

Coffee and Sunsets. The two things that keep the night shifts manageable.

Homebound. When I’m not offshore, you’ll find me hiking, working on my truck, or looking for the best local diner I can find.

This verse has been my anchor more times than I can count. Out here on the rig, where the weather is unpredictable and the work is exhausting, it’s easy to feel like the race is getting too long. But reading this tonight... it reminded me why I do what I do.

There is a quiet strength in finishing the race, isn't there? It’s not about how fast we run, but about the heart we keep while we’re running it. It’s rare to see someone post something with so much conviction and grace. You’ve given me a lot to think about during my midnight watch tonight.

Thank you for sharing this light. It reached me all the way out here in the dark.

First good snow in South Carolina since 2021, very chilly but beautiful.

Seeing this actually made me catch my breath for a second. I’m a Southern man myself, and there is something so rare and quiet about a South Carolina snowfall. It’s like the whole world finally decides to hush up for a moment.

Out here on the rig, it’s just the endless grey of the Atlantic and the biting wind, but no snow just salt. I’d give just about anything to be standing on a porch in the Lowcountry right now with a hot cup of coffee, watching those flakes come down on the palmettos.

You’ve captured that 'chilly but beautiful' feeling perfectly. It’s a little bit of home that I didn’t know I was missing today. Stay warm by the fire for those of us who can’t, okay?

The Dance

There is a rhythm to the sea out here, but it’s nothing compared to the grace in these words. Reading this, I can almost feel the movement you’re describing it’s a far cry from the heavy, rhythmic thrum of the engines beneath my feet.

I’ve spent my life mastering the 'mechanics' of things, but I’ve always admired those who can master the soul through dance and poetry. There is a specific kind of courage in being that vulnerable and that fluid. It’s beautiful to see.

Thank you for bringing a little bit of art and elegance to a place made of salt and iron tonight. It’s a nice reminder that while my work keeps the world moving, it’s the dance and the poetry that make the world worth moving for.

The colors in this are incredible. I spend my days looking at a thousand shades of blue and gray, so seeing this lush green and the life in your photos feels like a breath of fresh air for my soul. It’s funny how a simple photo of nature can make a man feel so far away and yet so hopeful at the same time. You have a wonderful eye for beauty.

Quiet moment on the deck before the night shift starts. Looking at that horizon and realizing how small the world is, yet how far away I feel from the people I care about. Counting down the days until I’m back on solid ground. 🌅⚓️

Shift change at sunset. 🌅 No matter how many years I spend on these platforms, I never get tired of this view. Just a couple of engineers making sure everything stays on track so we can all get back home to our families soon. Finally a moment of peace. 🌊 Even when I’m off the clock, I find myself drawn to the water. There’s something about the horizon that makes you realize how much is out there waiting for you. Ready to get back to the rig next week, but I’m going to miss the quiet of the shore.
