Composite - Monster
Video of my alternative process drawing.
Wood sculpture. Make a hyperfunctional object from items drawn in sketchbook. Combined items are a xBox360 controller, Playstation 3 controller, Razer mouse, cup, a pillow, and headphones.
Week seven assignment. No assignment. 30x40 Masonite board. Black tempra paint and white acrylic paint.
Week six assignment. Extremes of frequencies. 30x40 Masonite board. Black and white tempra paint.
Foam core sculpture (My Little Pony & Lollipop) about the early sexualization of children via media, society and cartoons.
I wanted to make a point to show how early children are getting exposed to sexual things and how soon people are looking at children in a sexual way. I chose to combine a My Little Pony doll and a lollipop. I chose the My Little Pony because there has been an obvious shift from what I grew up with to what the show looks like now. The characters all have hips, a pronounced butt, and are far more humanized. When I was younger, they just looked like horses.
Week five assignment. By Instruction.
Make 35 more shapes with tape for a total of 70 shapes.
Paint the shapes you’ve made with various shades of gray.
Remove tape.
Select 17 of the existing shapes.
Tape off the chosen shapes.
Re-paint the chosen shapes with various shades of gray.
Remove tape.
Clean up any places where the paint has bled under the tape.
Put up board and walk away.
40x30 Masonite board. Black and white tempra paint. Give instructions to a classmate and allow them to complete the instructions on the board. (See week four assignment for this painting's starting point.)
“It’s All In Your Head”
It’s all in your head, at least that’s what the Psilocybin mushrooms lead you to believe. Nothing was real and everything was flat, at least it felt flat. It was like being on the set of a movie. Only nature and other people persisted and demanded they remain three dimensional. The rest of the world, everything that was man made, was still and flat. Man made objects felt fake and as though the did not have the ability to actually function or do what they were intended to do (cars couldn't move, TVs could not actually show picture, etc.). I felt as though nothing could move without my permission, I allowed nothing to move and everything was still. Lines weren't straight anymore and instead were bending, breaking, collapsing on one another. I could see and feel the walls breathing with me, heaving gently.
My sculpture is a depiction of each of the experiences above. The human figure in the center, myself, is the only thing that is three dimensional. Everything in front of the figure is flat. Incorporated within the rest of the sculpture are things that I saw, there are a few select shapes that you can probably pick out if you look long enough, like a car and a game controller. The geometric nature of the lines and how the different layers and patterns represent the stillness of the objectives in my field of view, with the contrast of the layered wire attempting to give the sensation of breathing walls and objects.
I feel like my sculpture overall is very successful. My wire wrapped figure is my favorite part, personally. I wove the wire into itself to make a stable wall for the figure to be in front of so that I would not have to have supports for the wall. My wire figure, while supported by wires hidden in the legs, can stand in and of itself but is easily knocked over. The only thing that I wish I could have changed was to square everything off by taking a piece of paper and snipping anything that extended beyond the paper so that it would have had a very abrupt end. I was too concerned about my wall falling apart to actually go through with my plan, as I knew I wouldn't have time to repair it. Other than that, I really enjoy my sculpture and am very pleased with the outcome.
Week four assignment. Abstractly show the adjectives shattered and aggressive. 40x30 Masonite board.
Week three assignment. Economy of line using what was previously on the board. (See week two assignment.)
Week two assignment. Distort the grid of the previous painting and re-make. 30x40 Masonite board. Black and white tempra paint.
Week one assignment. Create an ink drawing, cut it into repeatable shapes and create a collage. Create a painting based on the collage. 30x40 Masonite board. Black and white tempra paint. Based on the ink collage pictured below.
