9 Ocean Facts You Likely Don’t Know, but Should
Earth is a place dominated by water, mainly oceans. It’s also a place our researchers study to understand life. Trillions of gallons of water flow freely across the surface of our blue-green planet. Ocean’s vibrant ecosystems impact our lives in many ways.
In celebration of World Oceans Day, here are a few things you might not know about these complex waterways.
1. Why is the ocean blue?
The way light is absorbed and scattered throughout the ocean determines which colors it takes on. Red, orange, yellow,and green light are absorbed quickly beneath the surface, leaving blue light to be scattered and reflected back. This causes us to see various blue and violet hues.
2. Want a good fishing spot?
Follow the phytoplankton! These small plant-like organisms are the beginning of the food web for most of the ocean. As phytoplankton grow and multiply, they are eaten by zooplankton, small fish and other animals. Larger animals then eat the smaller ones. The fishing industry identifies good spots by using ocean color images to locate areas rich in phytoplankton. Phytoplankton, as revealed by ocean color, frequently show scientists where ocean currents provide nutrients for plant growth.
3. The ocean is many colors.
When we look at the ocean from space, we see many different shades of blue. Using instruments that are more sensitive than the human eye, we can measure carefully the fantastic array of colors of the ocean. Different colors may reveal the presence and amount of phytoplankton, sediments and dissolved organic matter.
4. The ocean can be a dark place.
About 70 percent of the planet is ocean, with an average depth of more than 12,400 feet. Given that light doesn’t penetrate much deeper than 330 feet below the water’s surface (in the clearest water), most of our planet is in a perpetual state of darkness. Although dark, this part of the ocean still supports many forms of life, some of which are fed by sinking phytoplankton.
5. We study all aspects of ocean life.
Instruments on satellites in space, hundreds of kilometers above us, can measure many things about the sea: surface winds, sea surface temperature, water color, wave height, and height of the ocean surface.
6. In a gallon of average sea water, there is about ½ cup of salt.
The amount of salt varies depending on location. The Atlantic Ocean is saltier than the Pacific Ocean, for instance. Most of the salt in the ocean is the same kind of salt we put on our food: sodium chloride.
7. A single drop of sea water is teeming with life.
It will most likely have millions (yes, millions!) of bacteria and viruses, thousands of phytoplankton cells, and even some fish eggs, baby crabs, and small worms.
8. Where does Earth store freshwater?
Just 3.5 percent of Earth’s water is fresh—that is, with few salts in it. You can find Earth’s freshwater in our lakes, rivers, and streams, but don’t forget groundwater and glaciers. Over 68 percent of Earth’s freshwater is locked up in ice and glaciers. And another 30 percent is in groundwater.
9. Phytoplankton are the “lungs of the ocean”.
Just like forests are considered the “lungs of the earth”, phytoplankton is known for providing the same service in the ocean! They consume carbon dioxide, dissolved in the sunlit portion of the ocean, and produce about half of the world’s oxygen.

“Language evolves, and no amount of fulminating, or imposition of rules, can stop it. But more importantly, justice demands that we make the effort to accept ‘they’, ‘themself’ or any new gender-neutral pronouns that achieve widespread use. A language that collapses male and female into ‘man’ reflects a society that strips women of their separate being. And a language that collapses the spectrum of gender identities into male and female reflects a society that refuses to acknowledge the identity and very existence of a significant segment of its population. In the Trans Allyship Workbook (2017), Davey Shlasko writes: The rule against using singular they is enforced neither because it preserves some consistent, objective grammatical standard, nor because it serves our communication needs. It is enforced because enforcing language norms is a way of enforcing power structures. This issue of power is central to all three of these usage shifts. In each case, the shift gave a voice to a marginalised group: the non-educated non-elite; women; and those with non-binary gender identities. ‘They’ might not be particularly felicitous, but until we find something better, we need it. After years of working with ‘he or she’, I don’t think it’s clunky if used well, but I believe that we must drop it now, simply because it leaves out other gender identities. Macdonald accused Webster’s third edition of impoverishing the language, coarsening it, and destroying its beauty. But people still write beautiful prose, and we will get comfortable with singular ‘they’, much as, centuries ago, people adapted to singular ‘you’ as ‘thee’ fell out of use. Once a copyeditor, always a grammar nerd, and I confess that ‘Carey makes themself coffee every morning’ makes me wince. But I’m willing to wince for as long as it takes – most likely, not very long.”

This is something that I believe is true, but it's a hard sell as an argument, because people do not buy that their use of language does this. People who worked hard to learn all the conventions of their language seem to get defensive about it, maybe because what we teach kids is that there are two kinds of English: a narrowly prescribed correct kind, and a broad, messy, nonstandard wrong kind. And maybe we teach them a little bit about formal/informal within "correct" English.
This in and of itself helps create and reinforce the overall power structure of the society those kids grow up in. They learn to distinguish (falsely) between who speaks properly according to their parents and teachers, and who doesn't. They have no way to know that much of the grammar and convention they learned and got graded on in school is just a group of arbitrary rubrics that are pretty good at having the kids end up with the right usage in most situations, but not the actual rules of the language, which do exist but are fewer than we might think, and far more fluid.
I've talked to many full grown adults over the years who have internalized these rules from when they were kids and believe they are rules of the language, not just pretty-good-reminders-so-you-can-pass-a-test.
Which is kind of how we also teach gender. We take something complicated that young kids can't necessarily understand, give them the tiny bit of knowledge they are are ready for at a young age, and then fail to revisit the topic throughout the person's childhood to increase the complexity of their understanding and get closer and closer to reality.
We don't have this problem with more concrete things like the water cycle, volcanic activity, or the structure of the atom. We keep a growing kid informed about the water cycle. But we are content with ideas of gender stopping at the level a 3-year-old can understand, and a severely limited understanding of the richness of language itself.
Anyhow so you tell somebody they are reinforcing power structures by how they use English and they are going to look at you like you are crazy, because they think there's only one way to use English and also there are only 2 genders, and this is a lot to unpack all at once. The cumulative effect of how we teach language, gender, sexuality, and history topics to kids is huge for society as a whole. Really huge. It disadvantages and hurts people who don't fall in the right categories. But by the time we teach about these things in a meaningful way (which was in college for me), we're speaking to a tiny audience.

This is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen. @nateswinehart is the real deal.
The movie is uninterested in fan theories: Remember the part where I mentioned the guy who’s mad at Disney for making the so-called expanded universe non-canonical? On plenty of Star Wars message boards, there’s always been a little anger at the new trilogy for not adhering to established expanded universe ideas like Han Solo and Leia being happily married, or Luke Skywalker running a Jedi Academy. Instead, the movie suggests that after Return of the Jedi came a slow devolution into disappointment and ruin. (Hey, just like how the ’60s panned out, right, baby boomers?) And even if you can get with the new trilogy’s ideas about how things ended up after Jedi, then The Last Jedi spends a lot of its running time telling you that a lot of the things fans have obsessed about since The Force Awakens was released just didn’t matter. The 2015 film was directed by J.J. Abrams, who never met a mystery he couldn’t tease. But Johnson immediately quashed many of those mysteries in Last Jedi.

I’m struggling to reconcile my belief that a huge part of being a nerd is breaking apart and overanalyzing movies we care about, with my feeling that the “backlash” as it’s called to The Last Jedi is kind of ridiculous.

I thought The Last Jedi was a great movie, and even a great Star Wars movie. It reminded me a little of Deep Space Nine, which was heavy on the realpolitik and compromise with bad people, and had a similar loss of the idealism that was so attractive about the earlier parts of the franchise as envisioned by the original creators. Yeah they were both held together by ridiculous, wildly improbable plot conceits, but so are the originals. The main thing I wish was different was the phrase "laser sword" getting anywhere near the movie. What a weirdly jarring callback to the real world that was. Other than that, it felt a little overcrowded with too much going on in parallel to really have a cohesive sense of adventure and investment through the movie. On the other hand, will watch again.
I have decided that the digital watch is the perfect symbol of an imbalance in outlook in our day. I try wearing a regular watch every now and then. I spend the ten dollars at the big shop or three chain pharmacy or what have you, and put it on my wrist. Mainly to avoid the excuse of checking the time for looking at my phone. But I get tired of the watch, or I lose it one day, and then don't miss it much. Sometimes I've had slightly better watches, and my favorite is the self-winding kind. I wore that till it broke. If you don't wear them, they stop working and you have to wind them yourself. Maybe that's the metaphor I need from a wrist-dwelling timepiece: not where the time has gone or is going, but what I should be doing. Plus, a cool mechanism to bore people to death by explaining at parties, bus stops, etc.

Discovery of ‘mini-brains’ could change understanding of pain medication
The body’s peripheral nervous system could be capable of interpreting its environment and modulating pain, neuroscientists have established, after studying how rodents reacted to stimulation.
Until now, accepted scientific theory has held that only the central nervous system – the brain and spinal cord – could actually interpret and analyse sensations such as pain or heat.
The peripheral system that runs throughout the body was seen to be a mainly wiring network, relaying information to and from the central nervous system by delivering messages to the ‘control centre’ (the brain), which then tells the body how to react.
In recent years there has been some evidence of a more complex role for the peripheral nervous system, but this study by Hebei Medical University in China and the University of Leeds highlights a crucial new role for the ganglia, a collection of ‘nodules’.
Previously these were believed to act only as an energy source for messages being carried through the nervous system. In addition, researchers now believe they also have the ability to act as ‘mini-brains’, modifying how much information is sent to the central nervous system.
The five year study found that nerve cells within the ganglia can exchange information between each other with the help of a signalling molecule called GABA, a process that was previously believed to be restricted to the central nervous system.
The findings were published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation and have potential future implications for the development of new painkillers, including drugs to target backache and arthritis pain.
Pain relief drugs
Current pain relief drugs are targeted at the central nervous system and often have side effects that can include addiction and tolerance issues.
The new research opens up the possibility of a route for developing non-addictive and non-drowsy drugs, targeted at the peripheral nervous system. Safe therapeutic dosage of these new drugs can also be much higher, potentially resulting in higher efficacy.
Whilst the study showed a rodent’s peripheral nervous system was able to interpret the type of stimulation it was sensing, further research is still needed to understand how sensations are interpreted and whether these results apply to humans.
In addition, the theory would need to be adopted by drug development companies and extensively tested before laboratory and clinical trials of a drug could be carried out. Should the findings be adopted, a timescale of at least 15-20 years might be required to produce a working drug.
Nerve arrangements
Neuroscientist Professor Nikita Gamper, who led the research at both universities, said: “We found the peripheral nervous system has the ability to alter the information sent to the brain, rather than blindly passing everything on to the central nervous system.
“We don’t yet know how the system works, but the machinery is definitely in place to allow the peripheral system to interpret and modify the tactile information perceived by the brain in terms of interpreting pain, warmth or the solidity of objects.
“Further research is needed to understand exactly how it operates, but we have no reason to believe that the same nerve arrangements would not exist in humans.
“When our research team looked more closely at the peripheral system, we found the machinery for neuronal communication did exist in the peripheral nervous system’s structure. It is as if each sensory nerve has its own ‘mini-brain’, which to an extent, can interpret incoming information.”
Co-author of the study, Professor Xiaona Du from Hebei Medical University, added: “This dramatically changes our understanding of pain medication because in theory it is now possible to target drugs at the peripheral nervous system which could widen the type of treatments available.”
Professor Gamper believes the findings may present a challenge to the accepted ‘Gate Control Theory of Pain’. The theory holds that a primary ‘gate’ exists between the peripheral and central nervous systems, controlling what information is sent to the central system.
The study now suggests the transmission of information to the central nervous system must go through another set of gates, or more accurately a process similar to a volume control, where the flow of information can be controlled by the peripheral nervous system.
“Peripheral nerves have the ability to dial up or down the signal which goes through these gates to the brain”, said Professor Gamper. “Importantly, we believe that these gates can be exploited for therapeutic control of pain.”
Research Council support
Dr Kathryn Adcock, Head of Neurosciences and Mental Health at the Medical Research Council, which part-funded the work, said: “These findings are an interesting step in advancing scientists’ understanding of the mechanisms underpinning pain perception. We are committed to supporting work such as this to aid the continued search for new and better pain treatments.”
A view from industry
Lishuang Cao, head of Membrane Physiology at GlaxoSmithKline R&D in Shanghai, said: “This interesting finding could pave the way for developing novel pain medicines by targeting the peripheral GABA signaling pathway and at the same time avoiding or reducing the side effects of many existing painkillers.
“Further work is needed to understand the physiological role of GABA in painful situations like inflammatory, neuropathic and chronic pain. More importantly we need to know if the same mechanism is present in human beings’ peripheral nervous systems.”
